He would be OK as long as he isn't given total control over personnel. But Shanahan's such a control freak I can't see him ever agreeing to it.

The guy that writes for the NY Times had an interesting line about Mangini's firing says that Al Davis assertion that head coaches lose their effectiveness after being a head coach for 10 years holds some statistical weight. I guess he has a chapter about it in a book he wrote.

If you think about Shanahan, his success after the Superbowls was about the same as Chuck Noll, who also led a bunch of mediocre clubs, a few of which got to the playoffs but did not much. Don Shula was also pretty lackluster his last ten years as a head coach, as bunches of those Marino clubs went 9-7 or 7-9.

I'm curious enough to see the guy's numbers. John Madden left at about 10 years as a head coach. Tom Flores never duplicated his success at Seattle after winning two Super Bowls and having a very solid career with the Raiders. Al may be crazy, but there could be something to it. Didn't really Mike Holmgren start winning in Seattle until they took away the dual GM role? It seems like they were kind of middling when he started there for a few years.

earlnash, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 02:12 (sixteen years ago)

dudes let's just come to this conclusion, even on a fairly otm post like above: referencing the correctness of al davis is crazy talk.

the coughlin song seems ridiculous in the original context, but in the context of the NFL musical chairs coaching insanity we get treated to year after year it could still make a statement. I mean you can get the boot just for losing too early in the playoffs.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

Bowlen says he anticipated the new coach would not have full say over personnel moves, the way Shanahan did. That means the Broncos might hire a general manager, but Bowlen says his priority was hiring a new coach first.

Bowlen you got that backwards homie.

i certainly understand to an extent why people like hatin on shanahan, but he's a really good coach and i don't know who the broncs are going to find that's better.

the ref (ed hochuli ha ha) (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 00:48 (sixteen years ago)

oh c'mon, if it were only about who is the best "head coach", Shanahan would've never been fired

HPSCHD, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 00:59 (sixteen years ago)

i don't personally actually care either way about shanahan, he's fine and i think the firing is a little...wishful thinking over there. your quarterback is a diabetic with delusions of grandeur and you're still fronting champ bailey = what is this?

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 01:42 (sixteen years ago)

xpost so what is it about?

the ref (ed hochuli ha ha) (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 02:01 (sixteen years ago)

it was about dude having a huge ol ego. He never would've given up his Head of Football Everything position and/or worked with a GM not named Mike Shanahan, obviously things that needed to happen. He's just that bad at picking defensive talent, bringing in free agents, etc.

HPSCHD, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 02:23 (sixteen years ago)

this guy should just go to san diego when norv flames out and continue his quest to coach the entire afc west~

my fingers is a jellyfish (omar little), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 02:26 (sixteen years ago)

at least, as a Broncs fan, I hope all of this is correct. If Bowlen could've brought in a good GM and scaled back dude's position/pay grade, seems like that would've been a much more obvious/simple solution

HPSCHD, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 02:29 (sixteen years ago)

It's funny because he's only been in that position for two years or so and only attained that position because of the enablement of the Denver Broncos. Not disagreeing that he probably couldn't handle being a personnel guy too but i don't think Denver had a ton of talent issues outside of defensive front 7--could he not have been given another year to fix that?

the ref (ed hochuli ha ha) (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 02:29 (sixteen years ago)

The local yokels are howling to bring in martyball. Rly.

That O-line is good for one style only. Denver is going to have some tough years ahead without INSERT RB1 at RB1.

butt-rock miyagi (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 02:43 (sixteen years ago)

i don't see the defense getting better (enough to make a difference) next year with him in charge. Either he doesn't fire Slowik and everything continues to be awful, or he brings in someone new with a new scheme and gives him absolutely nothing to work with and everything continues to be awful.

I mean, maybe if our RB's were to stay healthy, we manage to get into the playoffs and play a competitive wild card game despite everything. I just don't think the staff as it was could help the team make the leap to something Super Bowl ready.

all speculation, though, obv.

HPSCHD, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 02:44 (sixteen years ago)

Honestly guys, Norv isn't going anywhere. The only way he gets fired is if the Chargers are healthy next year and still only win like 5 games, and even then I'm not sure, because AJ Smith does not like to admit his mistakes.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 02:46 (sixteen years ago)

the whole thing is hilar to me BECAUSE the broncos are so clearly worse off without him that it's not even worth discussing; whoever replaces him wont be better, period. and because i hate the broncos and shanahan, this is funny.

my fingers is a jellyfish (omar little), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 02:52 (sixteen years ago)

if everyone's healthy, i think 9-7 is about the best they could do. depending on the new coach, hopefully huge second year improvements regardless of next year's record.

HPSCHD, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 03:12 (sixteen years ago)

I don't see how it would be impossible for Bowlen to hire someone who does a good job. Shanahan was great, especially early, but his teams haven't won a playoff game since Elway retired, and they didn't seem to be getting better. If Shanahan wasn't willing to admit he has a horrible eye for defensive talent, time to bring in someone who does.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 03:12 (sixteen years ago)

i might agree with 5-11 except for the division in which they play. and yeah, woe to any coach who tries to replace the zone blocking running game.

i'm not saying he can't get someone good, just not someone BETTER. also, shanahan may not be a defensive mastermind but he's fielded good defenses as recently as 04 and 05 - and all denver needs is to upgrade the D from 'soul rendingly awful' to 'decent' to be pretty competetive. putting together a core of young talent as impressive as cutler, marshall and clady should've bought him more time.

I'd think the Broncos would be a pretty cherry head coaching job, probably one of the best half dozen in the league. It is about as stable a franchise as you can get, they have only had 3 coaches since 81 and Wade Phillips was for only two seasons. They have a franchise QB in place and some decent talent at other positions. Defenses come and go, I'd think with a few players it can turn over pretty quick.

I think Denver is in no worse shape than say the Colts were when Dungy took over a few years ago. Now they don't have Bill Polian in place and Bowlen seems to want to have a coach first, which is kind of cockeyed in modern football, but you never know, it could work out.

Shanahan had been their coach for 14 years and they had not won a playoff game in about the last 10, so I'd say that is a pretty good ride. Shanahan must just not have that much interest in golfing and taking some easy money doing the TV work, as you know it has been an open opportunity for him. If he would have taken the money a couple of years back, the guy would either be running the Dolphins or Cowboys now. I think he just got caught with his defense being way too porous right as his young QB was getting his game together. Sad thing is that they used to have a good defense and their QB was kind of off at times.

earlnash, Thursday, 8 January 2009 00:29 (sixteen years ago)

Looks like mangini will be hiring the defensive coordinator of Oakland to be the Browns DC and also promoting the current Jets QB coach to be the OC.

Mangini is also the brother-in-law of Indians GM Mark Shapiro which is quite a coincidence.
