i refuse to believe that arizona's defeats of loltlanta, carlolina, and philoldelphia are indicative of anything other than a combination of good fortune and three teams with a young confused qb, an occasionally int prone comedy qb, and a dense, unaware qb. then i remember that roethlisberger fits all three descriptions so all bets are off.

heh. my hometown is in the panhandle of MD, and the WV border took on a lot of significance there as far as ppl being snobby about "ok we are in a kinda rundown small city in appalachia.. but at least we don't live in west virginia." even though it is a couple miles away and not that different (lower taxes, worse roads, can buy beer and cigarettes on sundays). i also realized the majority of folks on the MD side are likely to be redskins fans, and *all* the steelers fans i know are from the WV side.

Too little, too late from ESPN on Roethlisberger
Posted by Mike Florio on July 21, 2009 4:23 PM ETESPN spokesman Mac Nwulu has provided us with a statement from the folks in Bristol regarding their decision not to mention the civil sexual assault suit against Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, which to our knowledge has been ignored by every national ESPN platform.
"At this point, we are not reporting the allegations against Ben Roethlisberger because no criminal complaint has been filed," Nwulu said. "As far as we know, this is a civil lawsuit that Roethlisberger has yet to address publicly."
Actually, Roethlisberger has addressed the lawsuit publicly, via a Monday night statement from lawyer David Cornwell, who has been retained to represent Roethlisberger.
And let's be realistic about it. If he's smart (and, frankly, the jury is still out on that one), Ben won't ever comment on the case publicly, other than to say, "No comment."
Besides, we don't buy for a minute the notion that a civil claim unaccompanied by a criminal complaint makes the situation not newsworthy. Indeed, ESPN posted last night on its NFL page a blurb from the AP regarding the civil suit filed by former NFL kicker Tony Zendejas, in which he claims a violation of his civil rights in connection with, coincidentally, a rape prosecution.
In that case, have the folks who allegedly violated the civil rights of Zendejas been charged criminally? Nope. But that hasn't kept ESPN from posting the AP item.
And that's the kicker on this one -- ESPN uses stuff from the AP all the time, and the AP has issued a story about the lawsuit against Roethlisberger.
So while we appreciate the fact that ESPN provided us with a statement, we choose to regard it as a hollow attempt to explain away what appears to be a strategy for remaining in the good graces of Ben Roethlisberger.

devil's advocate: this woman could be some nutbar for all we know, the only established fact is that she has filed a suit, and there's no reason that in itself should be news - i could file a similar suit vs Ben tomorrow even though i've never met him, and it would make for a tremendous story even though the only 'news' would be that i am indeed some nutbar. if he gets done for it, write it large. but in the meantime it may not be very fair splashing around the lol rapist headlines.
so you can at least explain the stance of espn (aka the devil)

from TMZ:
The woman accusing Ben Roethlisberger of sexual assault claims she tried to tell the head of hotel security about the incident the day after it happened -- but the guy completely blew her off and threatened her job.
In her lawsuit filed last week in Nevada, Andrea McNulty claims Guy Hyder -- the chief of security at Harrah's in Lake Tahoe -- told her she was "over-reacting" and that "most girls would feel lucky to have sex with someone like Ben Roethlisberger."
McNulty also claims Hyder told her that John Koster -- the president of the hotel - will "personally fire you for starting rumors about Roethlisberger's personal life."
McNulty also claims Hyder told her that Koster would be impressed by the sexual encounter, allegedly saying "Koster would love you even more if he knew about this ... Koster would suck his d*ck if Roethlisberger let him."
In the suit, McNulty claims she assumed the incident would be investigated by hotel security, but Hyder "did not do his job of investigating the assault." McNulty also claims she was "afraid of the consequences of going to police authorities since it was obvious to her that Harrah's and it's personnel ... would side with and support Roethlisberger."
McNulty also claims several Harrah's employees broke into her home and ripped files off of her computer, presumably for the purpose of defending themselves against a possible lawsuit.
Several months after the incident -- after McNulty claims she sought psychological treatment because of the encounter -- she claims she had a conversation with Hyder. McNulty says she told Hyder that she had been hospitalized specifically because of the Roethlisberger incident. Hyder allegedly replied, "I figured that was what was wrong, but I thought it was just like a date rape thing."
McNulty claims her bosses told her she was on thin ice at work ... so she preemptively lawyered up.
McNulty is seeking $380,000 in medical fees plus an unspecified amount of punitive damages.

In a statement released by lawyer David Cornwell, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger takes a howitzer to the lawsuit filed against him alleging sexual assault.Cornwell attaches to his statement e-mail messages sent by McNulty to the soldier that had been fabricated by the wife of a man with whom the plaintiff supposedly had been involved.Says Cornwell: "We believe that [the plaintiff's] own words directly refute the scurrilous allegations made in her Complaint. The attached documents, containing what we believe are [the plaintiff's] own words, are merely the tip of the investigative iceberg."[The plaintiff] should abandon her lawsuit immediately and admit that Ben Roethlisberger did not rape her."Per Cornwell, the plaintiff wrote two days after the alleged sexual assault that she was looking forward to having dinner with Roethlisberger and other celebrities attending the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship. Then, five months after the alleged assault, she wrote that she "would date Ben Roethlisberger" if the made-up soldier were to end their relationship. We'll be looking over the e-mails and possibly adding more details and analysis. For now, it's clear that Cornwell and Roethlisberger are adopting a very aggressive posture. It remains to be seen whether it works.
