i never remember this dude curry dominating at all in college, but maybe i guess it's cuz he played for wake flolrest
he did look like a freakin animal at the combine tho
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 25 February 2009 18:31 (sixteen years ago)
also up for discussion:
- whose career will bring us more lols: matthew stafford's or mark sanchez's?- what the hell is going on w/ andre smith? is this guy fucked or is it gonna be like when everyone passed on luis castillo cuz he roided but then he ended up being incredible?- with the amount of non-skill players on the top of the board, will this be the most boring draft ever?
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 25 February 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)
im in love w/ the linebackers in this draft btw
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 25 February 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)
nice, i was thinkin of startin this thread... i tivo'd all the combine covg this weekend and have been watching it intermittently when i've had the time
mock has pettigrew to the falcons, which is something i've been pondering lately - not a fan at all of first round TEs but it's a mid-20s pick and he'll be a hell of a player imo, basically i wouldn't object if that's who atl ended up with
stafford... lmbo. i pretty much think that i would never draft an underclassman QB, at this point. who's the last one to have a decent career - bledsoe? roethlisberger? it's a short list!
― s1ocki kong country (cankles), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)
my prediction for o_O reach pick: darrius heywood-bey, who apparently ran the third highest 40 ever at the combine (or something)
problem w/ dudes like this is that maryland has never had even a decent qb so im sure dude has no idea how to play wr besides to run SO FAST which... is okay but you might end up w/ roddy white or you might end up w/ troy williamson
i also love maclin, i'm a tad biased since i've seen basically every game he's played in, but dude's route running is good, he has good hands, and he can break the big play. fragility is his only problem
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 25 February 2009 18:42 (sixteen years ago)
that said i think the best wr in the draft is hakeem nicks, dude has the big play ability of harvin and maclin without the same press and he was able to be a dominating receiver in a pro-style system on a team w/o much surrounding talent
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 25 February 2009 18:45 (sixteen years ago)
luis castillo cuz he roided but then he ended up being incredible?
"incredible" is a pretty strong statement.
Is Maclin really a WR/RB? I can't see that guy lining up at RB.
Also, what do you guys think of Moreno?
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 18:50 (sixteen years ago)
nah maclin a str8 receiver with return potential, he's basically ted ginn w/ more pass catching experience
every time i've seen moreno play he's looked really solid, but i think he might be a little too undersized to be a good every down back. i think the best rb in the draft is beanie wells but i guess he's got injury issues
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 25 February 2009 18:52 (sixteen years ago)
noticed mayock has my uconn boy RB donald brown rated in the top 20 overall...think he'll perform comparably to say, ray rice last yr, if he ends up in a good situation

Moreno's a phenom in SEC play. I don't see him busting out like Adrian Peterson and shit in the NFL, though. I still think it's a shame you guys aren't playing Hester any more than you are, though (of course Sproles kind of filled that need).
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 00:34 (sixteen years ago)
Every time the Chargers brought him into the game Hester would fuck up. He was getting better at the end of the year.

I can't see the Jags going for a QB in the first round.
God I hope Laurinatis doesn't end up with the Pats.
Clay Matthews III - damn that dude has some stuff to live up to in a family of football players. His dad and uncle Bruce were both big time players who lasted FOREVER and were pretty good the whole time.
― earlnash, Monday, 9 March 2009 03:35 (sixteen years ago)
Jags were a mess last year, but it was hardly Garrard's fault. Remember, just the year before he took the Jags to the playoffs and only threw 3 INTs. I would at least hope he's safe.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 March 2009 03:47 (sixteen years ago)
I could see the Jags drafting a QB later on in the draft. Their lines need rebuilt especially on offense, which used to be their team's strength. They probably could also use a WR and a RB too more than a QB, at least early on.

Totally agree with Mel here:
When college football games go to overtime, what does Mel Kiper do? "I turn games off when games go to overtime in college -- turn 'em off!" He said college overtime rules are a "J-O-K-E," and yes, he did spell it out.
Kiper was happy that the NFL recently decided not to review its sudden-death overtime procedure. It is controversial because a coin toss decides who gets the ball first in the extra period.
"If a defense makes a stop, the other team shouldn't have a makeable field goal," he said. "They start off with that whole thing wrong from the get-go. If you want to eliminate special teams, I got a problem with that. But when you want to give a field goal kicker a chance to beat your defense when they stop you for zero yards? That is flat-out wrong."
In fact, Kiper doesn't like overtimes in general, at least not in the regular season. "If they end in a tie, they end in a tie. There's nothing wrong with that."
But as long as there is overtime, Kiper said if your defense can't stop the other team to get the ball back for your offense, then you don't deserve to win the game. "You don't deserve to play the game at all."
Oh, and if you still think NFL overtime should be like college football's overtime, this is what Kiper has to say to you: "If you think like a loser, you will be for the overtime being extended. If you think like a winner, you're satisfied with the system."

Andre Smith's botching of the pre-draft process is hardly news at this point. Still, his less-than-stellar workout at Alabama's pro pay is relevant. At 6-4 and 325 pounds, Smith struggled to notch 19 reps on the standard 225-pound bench press. He also exposed his flabby upper body during a pair of painful-to-witness 40-yard dash attempts, both of which lasted approximately 5.3 seconds. At this point, teams have seen enough on film and have learned enough about him as a person to hone in on his value. We're hearing that Smith still has a chance to land inside the top 10 but has no shot of catching up with the other top tackles in this class, Baylor's Jason Smith and Virginia's Eugene Monroe.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 21:40 (sixteen years ago)
19 reps on the bench isn't a big deal, guys with longer arms are mechanically disadvantaged when it comes to that lift. his giant titties are really what we should be concentrating on here

His senior season was interrupted by two shoulder injuries, which limited him to three starts. But McGee was still the most decorated player on Texas A&M in 2008, winning the Aggie Heart Award from his school and the Bowden Award from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
...
The Bowden Award epitomizes the student-athlete who conducts himself as a faith model in the community, in the classroom and on the field.
"That was like winning the Heisman Award for Jesus Christ," McGee said. "That's also a tremendous honor, what life is all about for me."

So Andre Smith has apparently moved back into the top 10 in projections? Interesting. I saw him interviewed at Bama's spring game yesterday and realized how much he just seems like a 12 year old kid in a huge body. Shit-canning his agent was a wise move.

― sans crit (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 19:53 (sixteen years ago)
Harvin is indeed on that list, according to a FoxSports.com report, and the Vikings, given their recent off-field issues dating from the Mike Tice coaching era, just can't go there again with a pick as risky as the Gators' junior. Come Saturday night, many NFL talent evaluators expect Harvin to fall into the mid-to-low 20s of the first round. Another receiver-needy team that I've heard will not touch Harvin is No. 30 Tennessee, who is still feeling the effects of the Pacman Jones' error.
wow okay the guy hit a blunt twice or something and all of a sudden he's being blacklisted - it's gonna be hilarious when he slides to a great team at the bottom of the draft and he ends up being the next devin hester
― sans crit (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 22 April 2009 19:54 (sixteen years ago)
I expect him to be wearing black and orange stripes, because the Bungles a) need speed and b) overlook "character issues" (which I don't think Percy has) on the regular.

Not real sure about Stafford either. I saw a few of his games and he seemed really streaky. In one series he could look awesome and in the next make you go waaa, what was that supposed to be. Great arm, but inconsistent accuracy.
I wouldn't want any of the top ten picks in this draft since the overall talent seems kind of ordinary.
― leavethecapital, Saturday, 25 April 2009 14:45 (sixteen years ago)
I guess there is also a superstition angle to the Lions drafting Stafford, as he broke Bobby Lane's records at their high school in Texas, the circle being joined henceforth ending the HEX OF BOBBY LANE.

pro gonzo deal, happy with the franchise right now, anticipate going to at least 3 games next year. considering season tickets but i wouldn't want to do cheap seats (although i do wonder - has anyone here sat endzone? the cw and my first instinct is that they're bad seats but i've had some ppl actually tell me otherwise) and i'm really just too cheap to pony up that cash for good seats (esp since they rope you in for exhibition games); almost definitely going to see the phins, pants, and saints though, maybe bears too to boo cutler (that's a monday or sunday night game right?).

― special guest appearance (Roberto Spiralli), Sunday, 26 April 2009 00:45 (sixteen years ago)
Analysis: A major reach here as the Raiders take the fastest wideout in the draft. Heyward-Bey is an explosive vertical threat; however, he is very raw as a route-runner, lacks great hands and might end up being one of the worst values in the 2009 draft.

Mel:
Oakland strikes again
As bad as the Heyward-Bey selection was, at least I understand what the Raiders may have been thinking since he does have a great deal of speed and they have a strong-armed quarterback in JaMarcus Russell. But the Raiders' second-round selection of safety Michael Mitchell is completely baffling to me. I had Mitchell as a potential undrafted free agent who might get picked up after the draft. For the Raiders to take him in the second round when better safeties like William Moore and Darcel McBath were available is simply stunning.

kinda shocked the vikes took the flyer on harvin, but excited for what he could do.
oher would have been the safe pick, but picking up that ginormous loadholt from OK in the second was a solid move...
does anyone know anything about asher allen?

― johnny crunch, Sunday, 26 April 2009 16:54 (sixteen years ago)
Glen Coffee will probably be a good 3rd down back behind Frank Gore in SF. Nice placement for Coffee.
Surprised Rashad Johnson fell so far, because he's a super smart safety. Could be put to good use in AZ anyway.

asher allen is a good pick - tough, physical corner iirc

didn't denver give up a first round next year for a second round this year? and next year's draft is supposed to be better. that seems....stupid

"jasper brinkley" is a cool name...sounds like a made up name neil young would use to check into a hotel.

it does, because it is stupid. that's the kind of shit dan reeves used to do when he was GM of atlanta.
speaking of which - knew it would be a defense-heavy draft for the birds, but only one offensive player in 8 picks. 3 DBs, 3 DL, 1 LB, 1 OL. awesome.

mcdaniels is just getting hammered here on the sports callin, mainly his move trading the 3s for one 2 in order to select a guy slated to go in the 6th or 7th round. And not nearly enough emphasis on front 7 of defense. his line in his just concluded presser was "we aim for best value on the board, not to fill our needs. we want tough, versatile players who have good character. then i will train them to win together." so broncs got a rb after taking 3 in fa, got dbs after taking them in fa.
things actually have the capacity to get so bad, they could be entertaining in their own right. hes def not playing it safe tho.

After some research, I am pretty pleased with the Chargers draft. Not sure about Larry English, but he looks great on tape, and didn't disappear against tougher competition. The RB from Colorado State looks like he might be a steal, and I loved the picks of Ellison and Byrd in 6th and 7th rounds.

Al Afalava
I think the Bears draft is getting an A for drafting this guy, as he has so many A's in his name.
