Pac-10 reviewing Oregon RB Blount's actions

The Pac-10 Conference will review tape of a punch thrown by Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount following the Ducks' loss to Boise State in the season opener Thursday night.

Pac-10 spokesman Jim Muldoon said commissioner Larry Scott was on his way back Friday morning from Boise, where he attended the game and saw the altercation.

"The commissioner has broad authority concerning misconduct," Muldoon said.

As Boise State began celebrating on their famous blue turf, defensive end Byron Hout yelled in Blount's face and tapped him on the shoulder pad. Before Broncos head coach Chris Petersen could pull Hout away, Blount landed a right to Hout's jaw, knocking him to his knees.

Blount also had to be restrained by police officers from fans heckling him on the way to the locker room after No. 16 Oregon's 19-8 loss to the No. 14 Broncos.

Oregon University president Richard Lariviere calling Blount's behavior "reprehensible" in a statement Friday.

"We do not and will not tolerate the actions that were taken by our player. Oregon's loyal fans expect and deserve better," Lariviere said. "The University of Oregon Athletics Department is reviewing the situation and will take appropriate action, reflecting the seriousness of the player's behavior."

After the game, Blount apologized for his actions.

"It was just something that I shouldn't have done," said Blount, who had eight carries for a loss of five yards. "I lost my head."

Boise State announced Friday that Hout would not be suspended for taunting Blount. School spokesman Max Corbet told The Associated Press in an e-mail that Petersen planned to spend time with Hout this week to help him learn from what happened.

Oregon team officials had no comment Friday morning, and practice was scheduled for later in the day.

Mike Bellotti, who stepped aside as head coach to become Oregon's athletic director this summer, said Thursday night he would consult with the Pac-10 concerning discipline for Blount.

Oregon coach Chip Kelly said he did not see the punch.

I will see it on tape and make a decision on what we need to do with him," Kelly said. "There is no place for that. I do not condone that."

In February, Blount was suspended indefinitely from the team for "failure to fulfill team obligations." Bellotti did not share any details, elaborate at the time, but Blount reportedly missed offseason team meetings.

He was reinstated before spring practice.

Blount, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound transfer from East Mississippi CC, rushed for 1,0002 yards and a school-record 17 touchdowns last season.

i feel bad for anyone that chooses college over the nfl and then gets hurt. i'd even feel bad for tim tebow, although not urban meyer.

I can't tell you how much I'd love to see LSU drop a game in week 1. That would immediately make the SEC West a 2-way competition between the Tide and Ole Miss.

plus, lsu has an annoying habit of celebrating after every defensive play. they just gave up a pass for 8 yards and trash-talked the guy after tackling him. i'm still 99% positive that they'll pull away soon and win by 2-3 touchdowns, but i'd be really happy if they lost.

high teens sounds right. it's always difficult to rank a team when the star player is hurt. regardless, the poll doesn't have much meaning until these teams play srs games.

I'm thinking that the Pac-10 is going to be a two-team league this year, especially with Oregon losing Blount. I thought maybe Cal could beat USC, but Barkley did not look like a true freshman out there.

I didn't watch the game, but there's not much you can learn from crushing SJSU. The safe bet is that USC will crush Ohio State and Notre Dame (lol) and have a harder time w/ Pac-10 teams. I don't care how good he is - Barkley's gonna make mistakes - we're playing them relatively early + our pass rush was looking great.

I am really enjoying this game, even with the whole "being on FOX"-ness of it all.

some fun moments but i was hoping one of these teams would show themselves to be a rad undefeated squad that could play with anybody and that didn't really happen

The more I hear on this whole Mike Leach deal, while he might be a serious jerk, I'm kind of thinking he is going to win a TON of money off Tech when the enviable lawsuit concludes.
