I'm beginning to wonder if there is a hex on being the "most accurate kicker in NFL history". Kaeding is like the second in line with the drunken kicker from Canada to have that title and then completely bomb in the playoffs.
Scott Norwood was a pretty accurate kicker and in hindsight that was a pretty long kick against the Giants and he never returned, but I wonder if at the time he was "the most accurate kicker in NFL history" when that went down.
― earlnash, Monday, 18 January 2010 22:11 (fifteen years ago)
Looking at the charts, I'm thinking that Gary Anderson might have been the "most accurate kicker in NFL history" or pretty damn close when he shanked that one for the Vikings a few years back. Most of the guys ahead of him started after 98. Anderson definitely was one of the elite kickers when he shanked that one.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/fg_perc_career.htm
You have to wonder.
Don't think Norwood had that title, but he was a probowler when that went down. I know Eddie Murray also remember him shanking a playoff loss for the Lions and he was a probowl caliber kicker too, at least at one point in his career.

― everyone kills people (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Monday, 18 January 2010 22:25 (fifteen years ago)
I want Saints-Colts, but then I have wanted a lot of things in the past couple of weeks that haven't happened. This is why we can't have nice things, the San Diego Chargers. THIS IS WHY.
― C-L, Monday, 18 January 2010 22:37 (fifteen years ago)
you guys were all so upset about that game! you wouldn't have liked to have been with me and my friends, we all openly decided to hate the chargers and pull for a jets win. sorry guys!
― everyone kills people (the schef (adam schefter ha ha)), Monday, 18 January 2010 23:06 (fifteen years ago)
i keep trying to spin this jets thing positively -- like, this is nice, they are gonna get screwed for next year because they won't be able to sign FAs and will have low draft spots -- they are tricking their fans into thinking that this is a thing that might last -- they will def be one of the playoff teams that goes 7-9 next year -- but if they make the super bowl i'm going to cry probably
that said... i don't have much in my heart for the chargers or the colts so i'm feeling a bit not up to the challenge of totally rooting for the jets -- i naturally fall towards the underdog anyway

A push by celebrities, athletes and the first lady encouraging text-message donations for earthquake relief in Haiti has contributed to a fund-raising bonanza for the American Red Cross, which a little over a year ago turned to Congress for a bailout.
As of late Sunday, the organization had collected pledges of $103 million, about $22 million of which came through the text-messaging program. The National Football League’s promotion of text-message donations during its weekend playoff games produced stunning results, with money “coming in at the rate of $500,000 an hour,” said Roger Lowe, a Red Cross spokesman.
“I need a better word than ‘unprecedented’ or ‘amazing’ to describe what’s happened with the text-message program,” Mr. Lowe said.

the saints/vikes should be a great game. going to be really really interesting to see how the vikes D matches up.
basically, it probably comes down to our defensive line.
the vikes D is basically predicated on getting good pressure from the four down lineman without doing a ton of blitzing schemes. in games where our front four have been shut-down, the defense frankly can look pathetic...when we get good pressure, like in the dallas game for instance or against green bay this year, we can basically make a high powered offense look like shit....
i think this is sort of a trait of the tampa 2 in general, like you give up stuff in the middle to tight ends and slot receivers while not giving away the big gains and shutting down the run....so then you just need like one sack or negative play for a loss to basically kill a drive...
we beat the saints last year but that team wasn't nearly as good as they are playing this year, and their D wasn't nearly as good.

i haven't read that much postgame stuff, but did anyone find out which player wasn't supposed to be in the huddle? this prob wasn't childress' fault -- i don't think head coaches control package personnel on the field. i might be wrong but it's more likely that one of the wrs/tes fucked up here, unless the play got in late or w/e and there was scrambling

yeah i found the blog post where florio got that from, but no one they talked to (childress and hutch) said exactly HOW it happened. i'm not clear on how substitutions work in general tbh--i guess the play gets radioed in and assistant coaches tell their guys to go on the field and then either those guys or the qb (who also has the play) would tell other guys to leave the field?
― call all destroyer, Monday, 25 January 2010 18:34 (fifteen years ago)
tahi probably wanted to be in there to do his patented "bumble around and get in adrian peterson's way" move...or maybe his other go-to "1 yard screen pass" move
― you forgot what a hardcore blogger is (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 25 January 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)
my guess is that they wanted a formation without a fullback, and tahi, assuming that they were just going to be running the clock out, ran into the huddle because he had been in most of the drive

maybe i'm wrong about this, but i think the saints' strategy -- which admittedly worked against boys & vikes (kind of) -- of blitz peyton like crazy and try and knock the shit out of him sounds like a kamikaze suicide pact to me. he shreds the blitz so, so well. i feel like the best way to beat him is to (relatively) sit back and try and make him force balls into coverage. i don't think he's the kind of QB that you want making split-second decisions with a bunch of guys in one-on-one coverage.
― waka shame (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 21:15 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, i was thinking about this and i kind of agree. the only way they're going to stop him is by getting an INT or two and i would think the best way to go about that is by creating confusion with coverage. he did throw a couple more picks this year and i'm wondering if maybe garcon and collie had something to do with that--miscommunications and whatnot.
