just saw a report on this on rachel maddow's show! speaking of nfl and drag..
Buddy Diliberto, longtime New Orleans sportscaster, said that if and when the Saints made the Super Bowl he would walk down Bourbon Street in a dress. This would be a really substantial bet if Dilberto hadn't said this from New Orleans, where people are generally two drinks and a gust of wind away from doing outlandish things anyway, and no one might've noticed if Diliberto had gone out and done it.Diliberto died in 2005, but the bet lived on, and on Sunday Bobby Hebert and his five livers led thousands of Who Dat men in drag down Bourbon Street.

"I've told this story this week," Manning said. "The worst year was 1980, and that was the year we thought we'd be pretty good. We'd done pretty well the year before (8-8), and it just fell apart. I won't get into that. It just did. We'd lost about the first 11 or 12 and Cooper and Peyton were going to the games. They were 6 and 4 and they're old enough to go and they're enjoying it."Olivia (Manning's wife) is pregnant with Eli. I'm having one of those games and about the fourth quarter, Cooper asked Olivia if he and Peyton could boo also. She was looking for a reason to quit going 'cause she was getting pretty big with Eli. And she said, 'That's it. I'm going to check out for 1980.' That year was tough. You never get used to losing."

― voices from the manstep (brownie), Friday, 5 February 2010 00:45 (fifteen years ago)
i really have no feel for this game. colts offense so solid, but saints d. looked fearsome v. vikings.
― Daniel, Esq., Friday, 5 February 2010 00:47 (fifteen years ago)
i think the colts are going to win tbh. like i said a bit ago, i don't think the saints defensive strategy is right for this game, and i kind of envision peyton picking them apart. the best thing the saints can do is get up like 14-3 or 21-7 or something and really put the pressure on the colts to become even more one-dimensional than they are now. obv you want to do that to any team, but it's crazy that no one has been able to exploit the fact that the colts are so one sided.
― ratface killah (J0rdan S.), Friday, 5 February 2010 00:58 (fifteen years ago)
yeah. colts' offense is all passing.
why do you think the saints defensive scheme matches up poorly?
― Daniel, Esq., Friday, 5 February 2010 01:01 (fifteen years ago)
Asked whether he felt Manning would need a last-minute game-winning drive in the Super Bowl to secure his legacy, Dungy said: “I believe that if they’re in the game Sunday and they need to drive to win the game, he’s going to do it. I don’t think the game’s going to come down to that. I think they’re going to be so far ahead that people are going to say, ‘Oh, ho-hum, he played a good game, they won by two scores, the Colts won their second championship.’ He’s going to have those rings Sunday night. I don’t think it’s going to be close.”
― yakko warner (cankles), Friday, 5 February 2010 01:01 (fifteen years ago)
i favor the colts, but it should be a close game and i'd give the saints a good shot at winning
not surprising that dungy is so partisan.

Dungy should suggest manning is overrated constantly to better his legacy
― yakko warner (cankles), Friday, 5 February 2010 01:03 (fifteen years ago)
it's funny, i guess aaron schatz thinks that it's more like 50/50 but i'm just not seeing it, in large part because it's difficult to imagine the colts offense getting slowed down. it hasn't happened yet after all.
to me the only way the saints get in this game is some fluky luck in the second and third quarters--think interception or return td. they need to keep it close and swing it their way on a possession or two.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 5 February 2010 01:03 (fifteen years ago)
I can see a scenario like the colt/jets game where the colts go down in the first half but after watching the Saints refuse to nail the Vikings after they committed one million turnovers I dunno I think the Colts are a three and out team rather than turnover prone and that's going to help them against an oddly sloppy Saints team.
― voices from the manstep (brownie), Friday, 5 February 2010 01:11 (fifteen years ago)
true. but hasn't the criticism of manning been that he gets too jumpy if he gets hit hard? if the saints blitz can get to him early, maybe manning will get rattled.
― Daniel, Esq., Friday, 5 February 2010 01:44 (fifteen years ago)
eh, personally, i think the way to get to peyton is to frustrate him by making him force throws. i don't think pressure, unless you can get it with the front four, makes him inaccurate. and i don't think he's easily rattled, at least not anymore. i don't think you want to be covering dallas clark/reggie wayne/austin collie/pierre garcon one-on-one, esp because the saints do not have a revis.
really, the best thing you can do against unstoppable passing offenses like this is get pressure with the front four. that's the sole reason why the giants beat the patriots, and if the saints are able to drop 6/7 and still get pressure on peyton then they will be in business. but, i don't see any evidence of that being possible, and if the jets -- the best blitzing team in the nfl -- couldn't blitz peyton into mistakes, i don't see how the saints can
― The ss (J0rdan S.), Friday, 5 February 2010 01:50 (fifteen years ago)
you want to turn peyton on himself -- you want want him thinking too much, trying to be too precise, having to fit balls into tight spaces. you want him to lose faith in his young wrs. i don't think you want him making split-second decisions with dallas clark being covered by roman harper.
idk if i'm making sense

k3vin have you spent much time in NOLA? before and after?
my point is not that the city doesn't need help, but most of the problems go much deeper than rebuilding houses in the 9th ward. most of the families who lived there have left the city for good by now. a lot of those untouched homes are untouched because nobody's there to claim or rebuild them.
if you don't believe this means something to the people who live there in a way it couldn't to Indianapolis, or any other American city besides maybe Detroit, I'm not going to try to convince you, but the folks I know there are feeling real happiness tonight and I can't see any reason to piss on it.

That was the first game where I regretted the Chargers getting rid of Brees.
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Monday, 8 February 2010 22:32 (fifteen years ago)
i said this upthread, but dolphins fans have been saying this kinda stuff too, and i think it rings pretty hollow (esp if you would up with rivers!). i mean, it would be like the fans of all other 31 teams going "i can't believe we passed up brady in the 6th round!" -- brees isn't brees without payton -- obv he would still be a great qb, but their combined power would not have been able to be replicated with norv turner. same for brady & belichick. it's not like the browns really missed out on the tom brady train, or what have you
― vincent gallogina (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 February 2010 22:34 (fifteen years ago)
i think brees would've been pretty sick in norv turner's offense. say what you will about him as a head coach, he knows how to design a passing game.
― yakko warner (cankles), Monday, 8 February 2010 22:47 (fifteen years ago)
He kinda already was Brees before the Chargers got rid of him though:
Brees 2004: 65.5%, 3150 yards, 27 TD, 7 INTBrees 2005: 64.6%, 3500+ yards, 24 TD, 15 INT
Not otherworldly yet, but still very good.
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Monday, 8 February 2010 22:50 (fifteen years ago)
SD wasn't really built to throw for 4500 yards when Brees was there, as that is pretty much the peak of LT's career, but DB went to a probowl in 04. Thing is that the Chargers receiving corps outside of Gates improved quite a bit over the past few years, when Brees was there, their wideouts were not that hot. I'm sure Brees would be putting up the same numbers or better as Rivers if he would have stayed.
― earlnash, Monday, 8 February 2010 23:34 (fifteen years ago)
