johnny crunch, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 21:59 (fifteen years ago)

i would have to rate

1 rodgers
2 ware
3 ronnie
4 mankins
5 merriman

weird draft, tons of busts

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 March 2010 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

this is a train wreck of a stretch

16 Houston Texans Travis Johnson Defensive Tackle Florida State
17 Cincinnati Bengals David Pollack Linebacker Georgia
18 Minnesota Vikings Erasmus James Defensive End Wisconsin
19 St. Louis Rams Alex Barron Offensive Tackle Florida State

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 March 2010 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

probably should switch out mankins for jamaal brown in my top 5 since tackle is a more valuable position

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 March 2010 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

Ware

Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 22:34 (fifteen years ago)

this whole first round is just littered with busts or people who can't exactly put it together

1 San Francisco 49ers Alex Smith Quarterback Utah - mildly competent, not even close to being worth the money

2 Miami Dolphins Ronnie Brown Running back Auburn - at times has been a top 3 running back in the nfl, can never stay healthy long enough to put it together

3 Cleveland Browns Braylon Edwards Wide Receiver Michigan - more trouble than he's worth

4 Chicago Bears Cedric Benson Running back Texas - might have had a jackpot season, but screwed over the bears anyway

5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Carnell Williams Running back Auburn - shown flashes, can't stay healthy
6 Tennessee Titans Adam Jones Cornerback West Virginia - what can you say, really?

7 Minnesota Vikings Troy Williamson Wide Receiver South Carolina - bust

8 Arizona Cardinals Antrel Rolle Cornerback Miami (FL) - obv way overrated now with his contract -- came in at a high spot in a high impact position and moved over to being a fairly above average player in a fairly low impact position -- this whole thing is weird

9 Washington Redskins Carlos Rogers Cornerback Auburn - started all 16 games last year, but not worth this slot

10 Detroit Lions Mike Williams Wide Receiver USC - jesus christ

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 March 2010 22:37 (fifteen years ago)

this top 10 has to be the most damning evidence against picking a WR in the top 10

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 March 2010 22:37 (fifteen years ago)

I remember when Detroit picked Williams some people thought it was a steal.

kiper having williams rated #1 overall this year has to be one of the most embarrassing prognostications in sports history for a big time personality

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 March 2010 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

you almost have double the amount of productive players in the bottom 10 that you have in the top 10

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 March 2010 22:40 (fifteen years ago)

In 2005, Kiper praised 8th overall selection, wide receiver Mike Williams, saying, "I'll see you at his Hall of Fame induction."

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 22:42 (fifteen years ago)

hahahaha mother of god

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 March 2010 22:43 (fifteen years ago)

i would be down to do this for other years, altho with some of them the best player would probably be self-evident (or only b/w two guys) -- it would prob be harder to choose "worst pick" -- but then again maybe not

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 March 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

voted roddy white just to throw my dude some love, but the answer's probably rodgers or ware.

david pollack would've been a star if he didn't break his neck

thomas davis was playing like an all-pro before he went on IR last year

derrick johnson looked good for a few years there, but since the switch to the 34 he's apparently been terrible for KC

marlin jackson's good when healthy, but he's just... never healthy

heath miller is honestly about as good as any TE in the league

I think I have said this before, but I remember turning on the TV somewhere between 10 and 15 or so, and being shocked that Aaron Rodgers hadn't been taken yet, and so I spent the next like three hours watching the draft and wondering if he would make it all the way down to the Packers' slot. And then he did, and I actually leapt off the couch in excitement. Looking at all the wreckage in this draft it is unbelievable how lucky that was. I would be embarrassed if I had been like "Oh thank God, Green Bay can finally start thinking about the future now that they have Jason Campbell."

The hit-to-miss ratio in this makes it look like the first round of the MLB draft, almost. It's so random!

C-L, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 23:42 (fifteen years ago)

voted alex barron but the page hadn't finished loading yet /haw

bnw, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

Cadillac Williams was kicking ass when he got started, got hurt and then got worn to a nub on some terrible Bucs clubs.

David Pollack 'broke his freakin neck' on about the first game he played in a the pros and never could play again. Getting drafted by the Bengals in the first round is often just not good for your health or soul.

That being said, there are a bunch of dudes even the good ones like Ronnie Brown and Merriman who have been constantly wounded in this draft.

A draft like this one makes dumping your first round pick and just signing a free agent look like a good idea.

earlnash, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:29 (fifteen years ago)

arod <3

iatee, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:37 (fifteen years ago)

Merriman has really only been wounded once, but it was a big one.

Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:37 (fifteen years ago)

we should do this for more years! would be a fun way to kill time in the offseason.

the answer is rodgers, then ware. tbh if you didn't have one of those guys you should have just traded down because castillo/white/miller/mankins are all real nice players at the end of the first.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 02:00 (fifteen years ago)

we could even do it for other ~rounds~ although in later rounds the debate gets kinda thin most likely

i think a week may be too long, maybe in a few days ill start an overlapping year

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 02:03 (fifteen years ago)

<3 u arod but I'm not going to pick a QB for this for the same reason sportswriters don't like voting relief pitchers and DHs into the HoF.

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 05:35 (fifteen years ago)

huh??

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 05:37 (fifteen years ago)

cuz they dont play a real position...?

Are Slimes the Jews of monsterdom? (cankles), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 05:46 (fifteen years ago)

cuz the nature of their position means that they don't impact the game as much as everyone else??

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 10 March 2010 05:57 (fifteen years ago)

more like opinion w/o care of the facts and unbecoming curmudgeonliness: arod doesn't need any more hizzipe than he has (although he is awesome). I have also seen Ware destroy ppl far more often than Ive seen arod play, which is a shame

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

i am leaning towards ware. is anyone better than ware at his positon right now? rodgers has got throwing for tons of yards over a season down but but i think he has a lot still to show in terms of overall effectiveness and consistency.

aarrissi-a-roni, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 14:03 (fifteen years ago)

Voted Patterson for 98 yard fumble return, solid player, <3 mine iggles.

Mordy, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 14:08 (fifteen years ago)

Here is the complete draft.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/2005.htm

I'd say it was a pretty meh draft class. I don't think there is a single HOF player in the 05 draft. I guess DeMarcus Ware is maybe the closest. There definitely isn't any offensive 'superstars' in this class.

Looks like the steal of the 2005 draft was DE Jay Ratliff going in the 7th round to Dallas who went to 2 Probowls including 1 1st team All AP. I'd say Parcells did pretty good getting him, Ware and Marion Barber in the same group. 6 of Dallas' 8 picks were in the pros in 2009 and 4 still with the Cowboys. I haven't looked at everybody close, but this is probably the best club draft.

earlnash, Thursday, 11 March 2010 03:22 (fifteen years ago)

Philly did OK, getting Herremans in the 4th and Cole in the 5th - their draft's really hurt by an awful second round though (two picks, Reggie Brown & Matt McCoy)

Atlanta's 05 draft was actually the best of the McKay tenure - Roddy White's a star receiver, Jonathan Babineaux is the best DT in the nfc south, Chauncey Davis is still on the team as a good rotational guy, Omiyale's starting for the Bears, and Boley's the best linebacker on the Giants

San Diego's draft was really strong - Merriman, Castillo, Sproles, Jackson
