GORAMS - which I prefer be pronounced as some kind of s.t.d.

bnw, Friday, 13 August 2010 23:47 (fifteen years ago)

Also, let's talk rules.
- I pushed back the trade deadline to after Thanksgiving.
- To help things stay competitive, the waiver order will be by reverse standings; worst team will have first crack at the wire on any given week.
- Playoffs will be wk 14, 15, 16 and include the top eight teams.

I also jostled the points breakdown; we can change these if we have a consensus disagreement. I was hoping it would make for some good conversation.

BTW, because Yahoo only allows for a certain number of ticked boxes, I had to turn off the 2 pt conversion scoring. If anyone gets burned by that during the season, let me know and I'll manually add the points.

RE Positions:
New team lineup is 1 QB, 3 WR, 2 RB, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 WR/RB/TE (note that last one), 1 DEF, 3 Defensive Players, 6 Bench and (I always wanted to institute this) a single IR spot.

8o---e*.\\\||///.*ə---o8 (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 14 August 2010 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

no gut busting joke can change history (polyphonic), Saturday, 14 August 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

So for quick reference, here's the specs:

- 14 team league for maximum drama
- Draft time for this league is Saturday September 4th at 5pm.
- I pushed back the trade deadline to after Thanksgiving.
- To help things stay competitive, the waiver order will be by reverse standings; worst team will have first crack at the wire on any given week.
- Playoffs will be wk 14, 15, 16 and include the top eight teams.
- Fractional point scoring and negative point scoring are allowed.

Team lineup is 1 QB, 3 WR, 2 RB, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 WR/RB/TE (note the swing TE option), 1 DEF, 3 Defensive Players, 6 Bench and (I always wanted to institute this) a single IR spot.

OFFENSE:
Passing, Receiving, Rushing or Returning TD: 6 pts
Completed Pass, Reception or Rushing attempt: .25 pt
25 Passing Yards: 1 pt
15 Receiving or Returning Yards: 1 pt
10 Rushing Yards: 1 pt
Incomplete Pass: -.25 pt
Fumbles or Interceptions: -2 pts

KICKING:
Field Goals 0-39 Yards: 3 pts

Field Goals 50+ Yards: 5 pts
Field Goals Missed 0-19 Yards: -2 pt
Field Goals Missed 20-29 Yards: -1 pt
PAT: 1 pt
Missed PAT: -1 pt

DEFENSE:
Tackle: 1 pt
1/2 Tackle: 1/2 pt
Sack, Fumble Recovery, Interception, Safety or Blocked Kick: 2 pts
Defensive TD: 6 pts
0 Points Allowed: 10 pts
1-6 Points Allowed: 7 pts
7-13 Points Allowed: 4 pts
14-20 Points Allowed: Zero pts
21-27 Points Allowed: -4 pts
28-34 Points Allowed: -7 pts
35 or more Points Allowed: -10 pts

is +/- 10 the most a category can be? i always thought a team putting up a zero on defense should be worth like 20

johnny crunch, Saturday, 14 August 2010 00:37 (fifteen years ago)

I don't like to see people win games based on the strength of any one player; 10 points feels like plenty to me.

One of the players sent some Qs about this league and I had some As that I thought were worth sharing:

Q: RE: return yardage - so it is credited to the player but not to Special Teams/Defense?
A: Yes, return yardage is to individual players, which adds extra benefit to RB/WR who double on the return team. Worth bearing in mind during the draft!

Q: IDP - we play 3 defensive players. Do we play players by position (1 each Defensive Lineman, Linebacker and Defensive Back) or are all IDP pooled together (I can play 3 Lineman, for example)
A: All IDP are indeed pooled together; you can draft 3 lineman. With the relatively high value of an independent tackle (equivalent to a 15 yard rush) the benefit of drafting a quality IDP early in the draft should be pretty clear.

Q: RE: Injured Reserve - do we draft for IR (say I wanted Fred Jackson, who will be injured at draft time - do I draft directly to IR or do I draft him as a RB, then move him to IR and grab a new player as a free agent after the draft). Also - does IR cover other non-players (suspended for example).
A: My understanding about IR is limited as this is my first year using it in yahoo, but given your example I believe you would draft Jackson, move him to IR and get a free agent and that IR would cover suspended players as well. I'll check with the other players to see if they've used IR before as well.

second question urgent and key - all of you should draft nothing but defensive linemen for the first five rounds and then rounds six thru eight nothing but kick returners obv

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 29 August 2010 13:01 (fifteen years ago)

so you would be MUSHIN, then?
and same as i said a week ago: "we can change these if we have a consensus disagreement. I was hoping it would make for some good conversation."
explain what's gory about the mess and we can recalibrate if it's gonna make for a better time.
But yeah, a fourteen person draft is not gonna be fast. I would guess we'll be done at 8.

This draft is pretty much going to be a crapshoot by round 4. I hope I at least get a favorable position in the order. I'm usually in the back 1/3 (around 7-10).

hard to gage w/o knowing league size but those starters look awesome, bench looks iffy maybe. personally i wouldn't waste two roster spots on defense, last year i just picked whoever had the best matchup off the waiver wire every week and did just fine. if i was in a league w/ 8 or more teams and i had yr starting rbs and wrs i would think 'i am going to win this league'.

my team's limping into the playoffs! btw i still like the waiver system - clearly it 'worked' or whatever but i swear i think i had last or next to last waiver priority the entire season and man did that get frustrating down the stretch. loved the deep league. only thing i would consider tweaking before next is maybe the team def scoring, i'm not sure how exactly - the way it's set up now makes sense to me on the face of it but in practice it seemed off, like there were weeks when it not fielding any team def at all was an attractive option - risking real likelihood of neg points vs possibility of 3-5 points. another thing i would suggest trying, and i don't know if yahoo or espn can even let you set it up this way, is having more idp's - say two db spots, two linebacker spots, two defensive linemen spots. big ups to forks for the good job he's done. good job forks.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 03:14 (fourteen years ago)

thanks big b. i think the answer to the team defense problem is just to roll back the points allowed bonuses and negatives so that you only get a negative if it's a legit blowout. but yeah, i also think the waiver system "worked" although i felt like i got fucked left and right. kept things competitive though!

Lou Ferrigno (Hulken) (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 03:40 (fourteen years ago)

Having been dead last for half the season, I loved the waiver order. It allowed me to only climb up to #11, but I had a great time doing it.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 03:54 (fourteen years ago)

lamest stat has to be the points for carries. 30 carries for 50 yds should not be a gold mine imo.

i have been otm (bnw), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 23:32 (fourteen years ago)

i won't lie, i was delighted by that td getting scrubbed. i am guessing this comes down to approx Harvin+5pts vs McCoy. you know McCoy will get a respectable total, but Harvin has been kind of all or nothing, and it's real hard to get excited about Minnesota in this game. my best hope barring injury is that Philly scores a ton in the air and Percy makes his points outta return yards. which unfortunately would nuke me in the other game. at this point i would glad take either, still p worried about getting neither.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 28 December 2010 23:40 (fourteen years ago)

w00t 7th seed wins! if it is any consolation bnw this is like the rams winning the super bowl. a great day for fantasy football.

yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay me

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 04:25 (fourteen years ago)

the two major changes i'd make for next year:
- points per carry would be .25 not .5; RBs put up ridiculous number cuz of this. I like leaving PPR at .5 tho
- Defenses don't get penalized negative points for high scoring games

otherwise, i'm pretty happy with the ground rules. any other major requests for next year?

it Terribel !!! (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 05:36 (fourteen years ago)

ha, congrats! glad it was at least close enough to make tonight's interesting. good season, weird scoring, see you at training camp.

xpost I would nix points per carry and maybe tone down return yards. Probably nix pass attempts too. OTOH it's a non-money/fun league so maybe weird stats keep things intersting.

i have been otm (bnw), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 05:39 (fourteen years ago)

any other major requests for next year?

Consolation games for the saps who don't make the playoffs.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 05:41 (fourteen years ago)

no consolation games! actually i don't care. maybe expanded playoff w/ byes for top 2 seeds? also can draft order be decided beforehand? if so maybe reverse order of finish and any new teams pick after that? or we switch to auction? has anyone here done auction? i've never done it - i have to be honest i'm not sure i grasp it - but the espn guys are always raving about it. i could see neg points for team def on high scoring game, but legitimately a high scoring game, not like 'you gave up 3 tds'. maybe give up 0-20 points: you get points, 21-31 points: you get no points, >31 points: you get neg points. maybe the easiest way to set a mark is look at the bottom four or five defenses, see how many avg ppg they gave up and if you surpass that you get neg points.

balls, Thursday, 30 December 2010 04:39 (fourteen years ago)

Auction is fantastic but I've never done it for football.

Auction is fun, but part of the fun is getting everyone in the same room (screaming). Never done an auction online, but it's worth a try. Defense - I'm used to defenses having a 20 point range from best to worst (20pt for giving up 0, no points for total fiasco), so it was just getting used to our 20pt range being +10 to -10; scoring zero is an average defensive game. What was a surprise for me is not crediting (or penalizing) defenses for yardage given up. But I've learned a bit this year about PPR and IDP this year, so I'll be ready for 2011! And byes for top seeds is great - current system only gives you a seeding advantage for winning regular season (which doesn't mean much in a balanced league, as GORAMS and PEACE proved).

not a lurker, though it appears the playoffs will be boring since it appears my Bills won't make it (wink).
