Steve Young fighting with Matt Millen, Stuart Scott and Trent Dilfer over the upcoming helmet-to-helmet rule change on the post-game show right now is a) absolutely awesome and b) kind of weird that all these other dudes are like "BAH! QUIT MAKING FOOTBALL FOR PUSSIES!"

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 04:10 (fifteen years ago)

That's a pretty major rule change! I agree that "devastating hit" is pretty goddamn vague.

schwantz, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 04:13 (fifteen years ago)

they need to start banning ppl before someone dies tho tbqh

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

"Devastating hit" is vague, but I think it's like that definition of pornography given a long time ago. "I know it when I see it."

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 04:17 (fifteen years ago)

Devastating hits make you horny?

schwantz, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 04:19 (fifteen years ago)

Merril Hoge* was on earlier talking about how the fundamentals of tackling have become less emphasized over time, to the point where almost does it anymore. I agree, tbh. Dudes need to quit using their helmets as battering rams and go back to wrapping people up with arms and shoulders.

(*I normally don't give half a crap about anything Merril Hoge has to say, but I agree with him on this.)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 04:21 (fifteen years ago)

^Agree

schwantz, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 04:23 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i've heard that from various ppl

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 04:23 (fifteen years ago)

"where almost >nobody< does it anymore." xp

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 04:24 (fifteen years ago)

I'm sure tackling fundamentals were well emphasized in the 60s and 70s when maniacs like Butkus and Tatum were trying to kill people with every hit.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 04:36 (fifteen years ago)

Some of the biggest hits from yesterday were leading with the shoulder anyway. Is that gonna be illegal only when it's "devastating?" If that's really the new standard, then the NFL has the dumbest rules committee in pro sports.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 04:42 (fifteen years ago)

(not that they don't already...)

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 04:42 (fifteen years ago)

7-7 last week, 47-43 for the year. Blech.

Cincinnati at Atlanta -- ATL. Bengals on the decline.
Washington at Chicago -- WAS. Whatever mojo the Bears had early on has been flushed down the toilet.
Philadelphia at Tennessee -- PHI. This is pretty much a toss-up, but I'll give the edge to Philly.
Jacksonville at Kansas City -- KC. Chiefs almost had the last game in the bag, and the Jags are no Texans.
Pittsburgh at Miami -- MIA. I'm legally bound to pick the Dolphins all season. It could happen!
Cleveland at New Orleans -- NO. Man, I'm SO GLAD I dropped Chris Ivory from my fantasy roster the week he fucking WENT OFF on Tampa Bay. I see him doing similar things to Cleveland.
St. Louis at Tampa Bay -- STL. When I pick the Rams, they lose. So the Bucs will probably win this one because the universe will make it so.
San Francisco at Carolina -- SF. This is Shitbowl 2010.
Buffalo at Baltimore -- BAL. I saw a Bills game on tv a couple weeks ago. They're not as bad as their record, but they stand no chance against the Ravens.
Arizona at Seattle -- SEA. No, wait. THIS is Shitbowl 2010.
Oakland at Denver -- DEN. Maybe another Tebow score? Sure, why not.
New England at San Diego -- NE. Because.
Minnesota at Green Bay -- MIN. I think it would be impossible for me to physically care less about this game.
New York Giants at Dallas -- NYG. See above.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 04:45 (fifteen years ago)

11-3 (!) last week, +10 for the year.

Cincinnati at Atlanta -- Falcons.
Washington at Chicago -- Bears.
Philadelphia at Tennessee -- Eagles rollin'.
Jacksonville at Kansas City -- Chiefs. Jacksonville is... awful.
Pittsburgh at Miami -- Steelers.
Cleveland at New Orleans -- Saints in a laugher.
St. Louis at Tampa Bay -- Bucs, for whatever reason.
San Francisco at Carolina -- 49ers, as I'm allowed to pick them now.
Buffalo at Baltimore -- Ravens' bench could win this game.
Arizona at Seattle -- Seahawks are looking sorta almost okay lately! Seahawks.
Oakland at Denver -- Broncos.
New England at San Diego -- Patriots. Chargers are in the midst of a lost season.
Minnesota at Green Bay -- Packers.
New York Giants at Dallas -- Giants.

Clay, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 07:02 (fifteen years ago)

as a Packer fan here goes the biggest week of the season, please please please do not let Favre beat you in Lambeau again, I just wouldn't be able to take that

frogbs, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 19:49 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah if Favre-Packers III: Sexting's Revenge ends in a horrible overtime loss for the Packers for the third straight week (which will completely kill me because that means the game will end at like midnight and I have to wake up at like 4:15 in the morning on Monday to get to the hospital) I do not know that I will be able to take it. I kinda need them to do this one for me, and for America.

However, Clay Matthews is apparently going to be back. And if the past two weeks have proved nothing else it is that the Packers are not doing such an awesome job of pressuring the quarterbacks when he is not there.

C-L, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

Sounds like the NFL is walking back the bit about "devastating hits," and focusing on helmet-to-helmet stuff.

rothko's chapel and waffles (omar little), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

The screwed up thing on these helmet plays is that they didn't even call penalties on all of them, but I think that second one by that Patriots safety right?

That second one by the Steelers Harrison was dirty as hell, he pretty much ducked his helmet and aimed for the side of the Browns' players head. One of these bozos is going to do that one time and kill someone. I can't believe they didn't call a flag on that play. Harrison did kind of aim his hit on that first one on Cribbs, but it was a bit more questionable. Harrison has been a cheap shot artist pretty much his whole career, so no surprise.

I think that one hit in the Eagles/Falcons game wasn't really dirty as they just ran into each other at full speed.

It looked like that guy from NE was definitely ducking his head down and aiming with his helmet on both hits.

earlnash, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 02:32 (fifteen years ago)

i think they're going to have to take intent out of the discussion, at least for now. cause a helmet to helmet hit, get suspended a game. no debate.

Ugh, that is absolutely vile.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 06:12 (fifteen years ago)

the above aside and back to helmet to helmet, i don't think anyone would argue that we're going to see someone killed on the field in our lifetime. I'm kind of amazed it's never happened up till now; only exception is Chuck Hughes and that was a heart attack and basically non-football related.

Brick Frog! (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 06:15 (fifteen years ago)

that was gnarly until that guy got actually murdered

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 06:16 (fifteen years ago)

ur talking bout the utube jordan? The police report was only minor injuries but yeah, one guy does get knocked the fuck out.

― earlnash, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 02:32 (5 hours ago)

not only that, it wasn't really helmet to helmet, more like shoulder to sternum. Admittedly it's CLOSE to helmet to helmet, but the complete lack of intentionality should have prevented it from being a fine.

But boy, it was SCARY, so he gets fined.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 07:37 (fifteen years ago)

Paralysis is much more likely; it's very hard to hit someone in the head hard enough to kill them, but you can definitely break their neck/back. I wonder how they'd respond if something like the Tatum/Stingley hit happened today.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 07:40 (fifteen years ago)

8-6 last week. Back to 50%

Indianapolis police have arrested Colts punter Pat McAfee and charged him with public intoxication after he was found wet and shirtless near a downtown canal.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 13:21 (fifteen years ago)

I wonder how they'd respond if something like the Tatum/Stingley hit happened today.

I wonder the same thing. As weird as it is to say we're becoming so much more aware of the effects of all these hits in today's world thanks to the internet, sooner or later people will start caring about the safety of these players and demand something be done. I read Stingley's article in SI just yesterday and it was so brutal...nobody should have to go through that. At this pace I do think somebody is going to get killed on the field - even Carson Palmer thinks so.

All this kind of makes me wonder what's going to happen if there's a lockout next season...how popular will the NFL be in 2012?

frogbs, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

was talking to someone last night who works for a brain injury advocacy assn, they do some work on football stuff (youth & college mainly) so she was up on all the medical & political developments about this. her opinion was: the tipping point is going to be more and more ex-players living longer with obvious brain damage because of improvements in all their OTHER medical care. usually these guys just disappear and die at 50. but if/when it become common knowledge that dudes who play football (esp linemen) become gibbering wrecks for the last third of life because of football, that's it. that and getting their brains donated to look at post-mortem.

goole, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

i really have a hard time believing there will be a lockout. there's just too much money and power involved. i suppose i should never underestimate the strength of greed and stupidity but MAN a LOT of people would have to be REALLY greedy and stupid to allow a lockout.

The narcissism and pathetic self-pity of this Jerome Harrison retirement "contemplation" puts anything in T.O.'s past to shame

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

james harrison is a piece of shit and may be retarded and/or insanse

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

yep

macaroni rascal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah wtf with Harrison right now. I mean the players have a point - there are a lot of BS roughing flags being thrown when you can clearly tell the rusher either could not have possibly seen the ball being thrown/kicked or had no way of stopping his momentum. If a QB gets leveled a half second after tossing the ball it's not roughing, it's physics. Still Harrison is being such a little bitch about this.

frogbs, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

the only players who are complaning are kamikaze linebackers and killshot safties--learn how to wrap and tackle you clowns.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

the problem with a lot of these dudes is they're less concerned about just making a play and stopping someone and more into turning WRs/RBs/QBs into their slo-mo victims and most of 'em are kinda clowns and creeps probably, yeah.

rothko's chapel and waffles (omar little), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

Harrison was the guy who refused to go to the White House after the Steelers won the Super Bowl because "they should have asked before we won the Super Bowl" or something.

macaroni rascal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

it needs to start with coaching staffs--i have little doubt that the present style of hitting is condoned by various coordinators and positions coaches and etc. if things change, it's because those guys will be instructed to make sure their players don't get suspended.

Or someone whose dick isn't grey

Princess TamTam, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 05:41 (fifteen years ago)

i actually think that trading him was a popular move last spring. he's well known as a dick in pgh, particularly compared to various penguins. but if it's football season and he's winning (and he's obviously v. important to the steelers' results) then all will be/is forgiven.

and of course he was never even charged, but whatevs. at the very least we know he's an asshole

mookieproof, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 05:49 (fifteen years ago)

I would've been impressed if they did trade him, but the Steelers (and the rest of the NFL) (and Tom Osborne) have a rich tradition of overlooking violence against women, especially when popular players are doing it.
