RIP former Bears DB Dave Duerson, age 50

I'm sad to hear that Dave Duerson is dead. I met Dave Duerson a couple of times, as he was from my hometown and I went to a football camp he sponsored back in the mid-80s. He is one of the few pro-athletes to come out of Muncie, but he was a good student both in high school and at Notre Dame. If I remember right, both of his parents were teachers.

Confirmed suicide: Donated his brain to science. Shot himself in the chest.

This is really unfortunate. I remember Duerson from the '85 Super Bowl year. He was in the lineup because Todd Bell held out that year. Bell never was able to get his spot back. RIP

By the way, Todd Bell also died young, at 47.

i'm afraid twenty years from now, kids are gonna be all like "how could you watch these guys kill themselves and not realize something was wrong" and i'll be like "but FANTASY..."

Al Harris also held out all year on the 85 Bears and he was a starting linebacker the year before. That defense was LOADED.

That defense was insane. I remember they played the Detroit Lions right after they announced the Pro Bowl, and Wilber Marshall had been snubbed. Marshall was an absolute assassin, and nearly decapitated both Lions qbs, Eric Hipple and Joe Ferguson (i think). Ferguson was unconsious before he even hit the ground. Marshall was a very sick man.

Colts' HOFer Art Donovan, from the days of "oversized coal miners and West Texas psychopaths." Just the face started me laughing whenever he was on Letterman.
