the cranky fan's guide to YOUR 2011 WASHINGTON REDSKINS because nobody else cares

it all began in september 2009, after a loss to detroit, as snyder drunk dials shanahan..

“A lot of calls, a lot of booze that night,” one participant said. “We were just like four college roommates drowning their sorrows with alcohol after our team lost. The difference was, one of our college buddies was the owner of the team. And he called an ex-coach to make him feel better.”

also from the "how snyder got shanahan" piece in the wash post, flashback to 2008 final regular season game. PORTIS' POCKETS STRAIGHT

Zorn and Portis had exchanged words in practice that week when Portis refused Zorn’s request that the running back take his hands out of his pocket during a drill.

That night, the eve of the Redskins’ final game of 2008, Cerrato summoned Zorn to a ballroom used by the team at the San Francisco Four Seasons hotel. Zorn brought Sherman Smith, his offensive coordinator and only genuine confidant on his staff. “Vinny kept telling Jim to apologize,” Smith said in a telephone interview. “And Jim was like: ‘For what? I just wanted him to take his hands out of his pocket.’ ”

cooooooley must have been bored with the mini shorts, because now they have tight end tights wednesday

When asked how macho tights are on the gridiron, Cooley replied, “It takes a real man to wear tights.”
Fred Davis added, “Peter Pan wore tights.”

“It’s like ketchup on a burger, man, that’s all it is,” (Orakpo) said of Landry going. ”We excited if he’s ready to go, we excited if he’s not. We all about food.”

i think i've seen this redskins-rams game before. several times

annual wash post column about how the team needs to change their name

they definitely do

i wonder if the league will have to step in to make it happen, because there sure doesn't seem to be much push for it to happen around here

seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 01:34 (thirteen years ago)

good on that guy for finding a semi-unique angle for that column

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 01:47 (thirteen years ago)

Would love for the Post to just step up and say "We will no longer use the team name in our coverage", that annual op-ed is feeling like a token gesture otherwise.

I DIED, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 01:52 (thirteen years ago)

i'm not sure if he's the only columnist who writes that piece every year, there may be a few, but this one was more interesting than usual

i really do think they need to change the name. you hear that name every day as if it isn't racist at all, because this is a football town and generally people don't think about it.

they've been my team since i was a kid but i can't bring myself to buy any of their gear for this reason. been thinking about picking up a chicago bears hoodie because i like the colors. i tried wearing a pats t-shirt but it seemed like a lot of random people were inexplicably rude to me that day, for real

seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 01:56 (thirteen years ago)

that might make a difference if the post did that. their columnists were pretty strongly influential in getting the team to integrate in the first place b/c of course the racist owner refused for so long

seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 01:57 (thirteen years ago)

what replacement name would you vote for?

mookieproof, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 02:19 (thirteen years ago)

is the Washington Hogs out of the question?

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 02:20 (thirteen years ago)

i don't know what would be a good replacement name. not hogs. it's difficult because you try to think of something that's really DC.. and what's really DC is that everyone roots for the redskins.

whoever named the washington nationals and set up their branding etc did a good job, get them to take a shot at it? nats have a nice font, nice hats, etc.

coooooley talks to the local sports radio guys who had a meltdown last year. about tony romo.

It's amazing, AMAZING to watch him choke like that... I'm just saying, I'm up 24 points in the third quarter, if I'm the head coach, I feel like I could probably just take a knee for the rest of the game, punt it away and there's no way that Detroit's gonna drive on you that many times. The only way you're gonna give up that many points is turnovers, right? It's hilarious to watch him throw pick sixes, too, back-to-back. I loved it.

cooley going HAM

symsymsym, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 02:20 (thirteen years ago)

Cooley wants to beat Romo himself, but not just on the football field. He said he would relish getting into a cage with him.

"For me to beat Tony? I'm gonna be honest, I don't know what kind of cage fighting skills he has," Cooley told the radio station. "I would probably try to incorporate my wrestling ability, like when I was in high school. Obviously it's been awhile, but I didn't like to beat people fast. I like to embarrass 'em a little bit. Like, take a 24-point lead, and then just play with it a little bit."

Showdown: JFK and the Integration of the Washington Redskins, by Thomas G. Smith

mookieproof, Monday, 31 October 2011 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

"Even in (Davis')will (he died in 1969) stipulated that the Redskins Foundation that was to be created with most of his estate not direct a single dollar toward “any purpose which supports or employs the principle of racial integration in any form.”"

class act there

google sluething so hard right now (forksclovetofu), Monday, 31 October 2011 16:52 (thirteen years ago)

wash post did a few articles about this very recently - the refusal of the team to integrate in the 60s does, in fact, explain why there is a significant percentage of dallas cowboys fans (esp older folks) in the DC area

the song used to be "fight for old dixie" instead of "fight for old DC"

on the one hand this is so hard to imagine because back when i started rooting for them, the next season QB doug williams won the super bowl. on the other hand they're still named the redskins and most people never even stop and think about that
