context: this probably seems like i am clowning him but i was ruminating on my belief that he is better than his reputation, and actually a decent QB with some strong physical skills whose problems are mostly mental and could get ironed out as he ages.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 14 November 2011 18:23 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think the Raiders need him, but when has that ever stopped them before?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 November 2011 18:23 (thirteen years ago)

The Jaguars would have to at least consider it. Gabbert looks pretty bad so far.

polyphonic, Monday, 14 November 2011 18:37 (thirteen years ago)

realistically?

dolphins/browns/broncos/titans definitely should. jax should think about it depending on how they assess gabbert. raiders--who the hell knows.

call all destroyer, Monday, 14 November 2011 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

i think physical skills are where he's weakest, though clearly he has a lot he needs to work on in the mental game too. it takes too much effort for him to drive the ball to the outside, and hes a less efficient passer for it; i dont think thats gonna change

4:

Dolphins - seems like a (slight) upgrade on Henne and Moore, they'd probably sign him unless Moore develops rapidly, also they really need any consistancy at QB

Jags - better than Gabbert, AFC South should be open for a few years and the Jags have a lot of good pieces

Titans - obviously Hasselbeck's retiring soon, and Sanchez is likely better than anyone they could pick up quickly

Browns - McCoy sucks, they probably would be interested in anything resembling a franchise QB

I considered Broncos (obviously better than Timmy Tebow, but they probably want to ride this thing out, plus they already have Orton who is almost as good...also I don't think Elway would be interested in a guy like Sanchez)

Would be interesting if you could include NFC teams too, as the Redskins would snap him up very quickly, but I can't think of any other team that would consider it outside of the NFC West - Zona's already committed, Rams are set, but Seattle would take him, and Sanchez to the 9'ers would be neat

The sham nation of Israel should be destroyed. (Princess TamTam), Monday, 14 November 2011 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

As the Patriots coach walked off the MetLife Stadium field, he threw his arm around his son, Stephen, and added an exclamation mark to the Patriots’ 37-16 victory over the Jets.

“Thirty-seven points on the best defense in the league, s--- my d---,” the Patriots coach said in celebration.

The remark just adds to the humiliating defeat the Patriots handed the Jets. The man in the hoodie doesn’t deliver gems like that to the press, but he clearly relished in beating the brash-talking Rex Ryan and the Jets.

Belichick was asked about the comment this morning on WFAN.

"Any conversations I had privately I'll keep private," he said.

Jake Locker was a #1 pick so he's probably not going there.

polyphonic, Monday, 14 November 2011 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

whoa I totally forgot about Jake "The Snake" Locker

frogbs, Monday, 14 November 2011 20:59 (thirteen years ago)

me too.

sanchez is better than kyle orton btw.

call all destroyer, Monday, 14 November 2011 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

yeah but neither are going to lead the Broncos anywhere, and again I don't see Elway wanting a guy like him. IMO they both seem to have similar flaws but at least Sanchez will probably get better

frogbs, Monday, 14 November 2011 21:24 (thirteen years ago)

i think the browns, the broncos and the chiefs would be the only teams to even consider picking him up on his current contract

he's not better than henne (imo) and he's certainly not so much better than henne to justify getting paid like $30 more million dollars than him

if you take into account that some of those teams might be plotting to take QBs in the 2012 draft... well, then maybe he'd clear waivers

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 November 2011 00:25 (thirteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

ok, i have completed my mulling on this

definites:
cleveland - mccoy is not working out
denver - it will end horribly, there is no escaping it
tennessee - hass is playing ok but an obvious stopgap

probably:
jacksonville - too soon to call on gabbert but why not have both, one of them might come good
kansas city - cassel maybe a better decision maker, similar passers otherwise, sanchez much more mobile. cassel not gonna get any better now, sanchez prob will. hard to have to deal with both their stupid contracts, that's the only hesitation
oakland - i think palmer is goiong to do well in the last part of this season but this is the last flicker before burning out, which is one reason the trade was so horrible

possible but probably not:
miami - both their QBs might be better than sanchez, it is just hard to tell

so, i will say 6. he is probably in the best spot he could be in with the jets but i think he would also do well in the jax or titans teams.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 04:23 (thirteen years ago)

Again, Tenn just spent a high pick on a QB.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 04:51 (thirteen years ago)

i would still take him. i would rather have 2.5 years of sanchez than kill time with hasselbeck and hope that locker works out. there would be less pressure to make locker a starter early and in a couple of years you can assess - if locker looks like the real deal, don't extend sanchez. if he isn't working out, you already have a decent qb at a good age. that team as much as any other needs to stop fuckin around at qb.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 13:13 (thirteen years ago)

look, Chad Henne is definitely not better than the Sanchize

frogbs, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 13:30 (thirteen years ago)

i thought henne looked okay when i saw him earlier this year, but looking back i guess he had decent games against cleveland and new england, along with just about every other qb. i guess he has certainly looked like a disaster in times past. i really think we don't have enough to evaluate him on. if i had to choose between henne, moore and sanchez i would choose sanchez, but if i am miami and i already have the first two, how can i tell if i am making much of a difference by adding sanchez?

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 13:50 (thirteen years ago)

well i'd ride out the season with Moore and see if he looks viable. as mentioned, Sanchez will probably get better over the next couple of years and could be a "franchise quarterback" which Miami desperately has needed since Marino retired

frogbs, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 14:40 (thirteen years ago)

i think sanchez could get better if he is seriously coached up by someone but that's hardly a given. he's had stability and talent around him with the jets and he still makes bad plays all the time.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 14:46 (thirteen years ago)

unless its the playoffs, where he suddenly turns to God mode

Ha! results are useless.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 November 2011 01:21 (thirteen years ago)

well i think if you take into account their contracts i have no idea why you would pick sanchez over henne

if you put sanchez on the dolphins last year w/ one good wr and the worst running game in the nfl he would've looked like complete and utter ass

yo zuccotti (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 17 November 2011 01:26 (thirteen years ago)

would have voted 1 (Dolphins).

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 17 November 2011 09:55 (thirteen years ago)

can I take back what I said earlier and vote 0

frogbs, Friday, 18 November 2011 14:46 (thirteen years ago)

based even on last night's terrible showing, sanchez is clearly a much better qb than tebow, but if denver had sanchez they would have lost. i just don't know what to think anymore.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 18 November 2011 14:49 (thirteen years ago)

sanchize is owed 8.5m in 2012 and 4m in 2013

HE'S GETTING PAID 14.75m THIS SEASON

yo zuccotti (J0rdan S.), Friday, 18 November 2011 15:02 (thirteen years ago)

he's better at chucking it I guess but he makes a lot of terrible decisions and only posted a high completion percentage b/c of all the 3-5 yard throws the Broncos were just giving away anyway, nearly anything that required good timing or an accurate throw was an incompletion (or worse, a pick-6)

arguments for the rookie wage scale, pt. 5000

call all destroyer, Friday, 18 November 2011 15:05 (thirteen years ago)

still not sure how many teams would pick him up on that contract -- 4m is a pretty small salary but 8.5m is a pretty big investment

yo zuccotti (J0rdan S.), Friday, 18 November 2011 15:08 (thirteen years ago)

how do you wind up wit a contract that dumps everything into year 3?? that is astounding. great work tannenbaum. it's like it is designed to cause a year 4 holdout. "hey mike, about my massive paycut this year..."

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 18 November 2011 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i mean maybe they figured that either sanchize was gonna be amazing and they would sign him long term after year three or he was gonna be not so good and they wanted an escape hatch...? idk it's bizarre any way you slice it i think

yo zuccotti (J0rdan S.), Friday, 18 November 2011 15:32 (thirteen years ago)

yeah Ive never heard of a rookie contract in any sport that pays less from one year to the next. will be interesting to see if he's QB'ing at all in 2013. would think the Jets have to eventually get sick of him, hell even Rex seems frustrated now, he used to defend him no matter how shit he was playing

really, his only credit is those playoff wins the last two years, and yeah I like how he elevated his game when it mattered but the Jets really, really should not have made the playoffs in 2009 (as a 7-7 team that faced two teams in a row that couldn't care less as they were already in) and honestly I wonder if he'd be cut already if not for that

frogbs, Friday, 18 November 2011 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

one month passes...

@michaelombardi
Michael Lombardi
Tim Tebow 3 completions of 40 plus yds in the 2nd qrtr... Mark Sanchez had 2 all season

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 8 January 2012 23:55 (thirteen years ago)

"based even on last night's terrible showing, sanchez is clearly a much better qb than tebow"

This post was made two months ago, and I probably agreed with it then. Now, no way. Tebow is much better than Sanchez.

You're a notch, I'm a legend (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:11 (thirteen years ago)

the difference is that I feel like Tebow's biggest problem (totally misses wide open receivers) is a lot more fixable than everything wrong with Sanchez (no field awareness, inaccurate past 5-6 yards, can't read a defense)

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:14 (thirteen years ago)

right now with Matt Flynn likely being offered a nice contract and several pro-ready contracts in the draft I can see the answer here being much closer to zero

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:15 (thirteen years ago)

Remember also Tebow had significantly more on the job training in college. He was a four year starter (I believe) in the SEC. Sanchez had a comparitively puny college career. For all you want to think about the guy, he has leadership skills up the wazoo.

You're a notch, I'm a legend (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:55 (thirteen years ago)

i just don't know, what do you really get with either tebow or sanchez? each as inconsistent at the other so far. sanchez was killed by the jets all round having a horrible offense this year, although of course he himself was part of that. but he didn't have much of any kind of chance to succeed. and let's not forget that one game later tebow is still the same guy who was abominable for the last 3 games of the reg season. i don't know, i wouldn't want either. thank the good lord above that the pats have a real qb. fuck these guys.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

conventional wisdom is interesting here in that it is very positive on how denver's done their offense with tebow and very down on the jets offensive scheme. i wonder how much i agree with that.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

jets were crappy at running the ball and had sanchez throwing an average of 34 passes a game, with a high of 59(!) passes in the loss to NYG. i am pretty comfortable with the conventional wisdom around the jets offensive scheme being bad.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 15:57 (thirteen years ago)

yeah that 59 passes game really stands out

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

also they were a self-declared running team that had lousy running backs

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

i still think regardless of QB that there's way more talent on the Jets side. for example I'd think Peyton Manning could turn the Jets into an offensive juggernaut. Denver still seems a ways away but could get better if they commit to drafting around Tebow

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:14 (thirteen years ago)

the jets have very little at the skill positions, also they need to fire their coordinator

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

shonn greene is an average back, santonio holmes is a pretty good wr and dustin keller is a pretty good te -- after that they have nothing, plus sanchez sucks and their coordinator is vanilla

a pretty awful recipe imo

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:19 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think that's particularly worse than some of the teams Peyton's taken to the playoffs

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:32 (thirteen years ago)

well i dislike mark sanchez as much as anyone but it's pretty unfair to compare him to peyton manning

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:37 (thirteen years ago)

either way the Jets offense should be a lot better than "22nd best"

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:43 (thirteen years ago)

it should, yes

the fact that he didn't even get his own joke here is part of the reason i will not mourn his passing
