Do you believe the negative stuff in Pearlman's book or do you think it was just bullshit?

tbh this part just makes me like him more:

Back when Payton drove his own RV to Bears training camp, he used to load the rear of the vehicle with tanks of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. At nights and during breaks in the action, players sneaked into Payton's trailer, loaded the nitrous oxide into balloons, then carried them around while taking hits. The goofy laughter could be heard throughout the training facility.

I think I believe a lot of it. That particular quote is kind of ludicrous, but I can imagine it happened. The book was extremely through and you could tell the research was painstaking. The negative press it got was a shame, because i learned a lot about Payton, good and bad, from it. He's still my favorite athlete of all time, i just know more about him now. I think the book was fantastic.

Maybe Payton sounded like that because he was also on helium all the time.
