Here's a place to discuss the offseason and the inevitable hiring of terrible coordinators who will last two years at most, plus all the RG3 news that's fit to print

frogbs, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 18:13 (twelve years ago)

I hope RG3 isn't the new Daunte Culpepper.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 20:03 (twelve years ago)

good piece on Deadspin today about the over racism when it comes to black quarterbacks. RG3's 40 time is only .2 seconds faster than Luck yet he got 50 more rushes - despite also being one of the most accurate QBs in the league (only Peyton, Rodgers, and Matt Ryan completed a higher %).

frogbs, Thursday, 10 January 2013 21:19 (twelve years ago)

i am just gonna say that that article is fucking retarded and thank you for the reminder not to read deadspin

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 10 January 2013 21:31 (twelve years ago)

god i really can't tell if frogbs is trolling

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 January 2013 21:34 (twelve years ago)

JUST IN CASE

i like drew's writing but this kinda shit is far from his expertise. "40 time" is not the same thing as "running ability" and the reason why RGIII ran far more than luck is because he's more agile, better at cutting, quicker in small spaces etc. that has nothing to do with perceptions about race. when luck runs a zone read you don't go (hmmm that should be a big part of their offense) because he's just not all that good at it. griffin is the exact opposite of that.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 January 2013 21:37 (twelve years ago)

oh i agree the conclusions he's drawing are bad (and he probably may not exactly believe them himself) - not saying Luck should be running more, but that race definitely contributes to the way a lot of people perceive quarterbacks. obviously Griffin gets way more of these plays called for him because that was his system in college.

frogbs, Thursday, 10 January 2013 21:44 (twelve years ago)

yeah i feel like QB speed is in some cases lower on the scale wrt to running ability. some qbs run like barry sanders, some like

^.2 is a lot when it comes to 40 times. For a wide receiver or db, it's the difference between the 1st round and the 5th.

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Thursday, 10 January 2013 22:01 (twelve years ago)

obviously Griffin gets way more of these plays called for him because that was his system in college.

^ and the white guy who succeeded him at Baylor is running the exact same system, with nearly the same amount of success. I'm not sure what the point is.

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Thursday, 10 January 2013 22:02 (twelve years ago)

as far as charges of racism go I'm inclined to believe this is more a media problem (alternatively see the odd fawning over "gritty" white TE/WRs like Welkah and Witten). I do think 100 rushes for RG3 is dumb. The guy could be as great a pocket passer as Brees or Brady and we may never get to find out. When I think about it the difference between 4.4 and 4.6 is really quite large but RG3 doesn't have the self-preservation instinct that guys like Rodgers have (certainly something he had to learn, btw) and Shanahan's offensive system is going to get him killed.

frogbs, Thursday, 10 January 2013 22:05 (twelve years ago)

he COULD be a great pocket passer... though comparing him to brees & brady is really premature. you can't disentangle his passing stats this year from the offense where the threat of him running on every play was constant. personally i'd stick with what they're doing while hoping that he can learn -- unlike vick -- to avoid contact when he can. i just think it would be a waste to not utilize his running ability and it's hard to say that he should decrease his carries when they're primarily running option plays.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 January 2013 22:08 (twelve years ago)

when I saw Griffin at Baylor I saw Drew Brees and thought he wouldn't run that much in the NFL. The dude had a 65% completion percentage and a 20/5 TD/INT ratio this year, just let him throw it imo.

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 10 January 2013 22:13 (twelve years ago)

you can't disentangle his passing stats this year from the offense where the threat of him running on every play was constant.

^ agreed. He's a one man play action machine.

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Thursday, 10 January 2013 22:20 (twelve years ago)

Griffin also ran out of bounds a lot after he almost got decapitated by Weatherspoon. He'll learn from the Ngata hit too.

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Thursday, 10 January 2013 22:21 (twelve years ago)

I think there's a lot of evidence that he really didn't learn - he still look a lot of those dumb kind of hits after that game but there was no injury so nobody really paid attention. He fumbles a lot which is another side effect of playing balls out all the time.

Anyway my emphasis above is on the word "could" - even without the play action game his accuracy and ability to avoid picks is pretty damn good for a rookie. I think it's possible for him to run less but for a greater ypc figure. I also question having him run so much when you've got maybe the 2nd best RB in the game.

He survived the season which proves he learned. He's on record saying he learned. The weatherspoon hit was a killer and a dumb play by rg3

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Friday, 11 January 2013 00:45 (twelve years ago)

"he COULD be a great pocket passer... though comparing him to brees & brady is really premature"

The guy that RGIII is like that people seem to avoid comparing him to is Donovan McNabb. I think McNabb's last couple years of 'meh' kind of make people forget how really unique and good he was those first few years. Early on in that run, McNabb was the Eagles offense. The Andy Reid that threw the ball 50 times a game every game really was much longer down the line.

That said, I think RGIII is an athlete nearly on par with Vick and Vince Young, both of which had moments early on that you thought 'you know this might work and change the QB' position. I'd say Griffin has a more solid game of being a real QB, kinda like McNabb and you could see him grow into a more traditional QB like McNabb did.

earlnash, Friday, 11 January 2013 03:37 (twelve years ago)

but isn't rg3 much, much better a runner than vince or donovan?

an eagle named "small government" (call all destroyer), Friday, 11 January 2013 03:41 (twelve years ago)

he's almost certainly a better passer than any mobile QB I can remember

frogbs, Friday, 11 January 2013 03:47 (twelve years ago)

could see him as peak vick, which is v v good

comparing him 2 brady is kinda wild 2 think abt but idk

johnny crunch, Friday, 11 January 2013 03:50 (twelve years ago)

mcnabb isn't a bad comparison... i think maybe aaron rodgers is the peak comparison for him if they really want to tone down his running. rodgers is one of the best passers in the game but is still a huge threat with his legs when he wants to be.

"but isn't rg3 much, much better a runner than vince or donovan?"

McNabb ran a bunch the first couple years he was the starter. He was the Eagles offense back then as they had terrible WR and no-name RBs. They were pretty much a surprise that first year to make the playoffs and win a game.

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/McNaDo00.htm

Looking it up, it was like 629 yards his first year as a starter, which is still a ton for a Qb and led the Eagles in rushing.

Vince Young ran for like 552 as a rookie and I think they won a bunch in a row to make the playoffs out of nowhere.

Part of the reason I think Steve Young was so successful running the ball is that the Niner West Coast offense completely fxxxed with all of the defensive schemes for it's day. People were so worried trying to cover all of those targets, I'd imagine there was quite a few times he could go hey I can run here. He paid for it with some concussions, but he took over the Niner offense which had already won 4 titles and changed football too. Alot of dudes would have been successful with that team to an extent. I think Aaron Rogers is pretty similar to Young actually.

I still think the whole TO debacle, getting sick in the Superbowl and then those last few years kind of muddies how good and unique McNabb was as a QB. McNabb's the first real modern running QB and he was the first one that was pretty successful moving into being a traditional QB.

Well the Jets grease fire seems to be percolating. I would guess Rex Ryan will be a defensive coordinator for someone next year and some new fool will take this job.

I still don't see why the Jets gave Sanchez that huge extension. I guess they were confusing team success with individual success. It's kind of hard considering how awful Sanchez has played over the past couple years or so that he did have a couple of pretty decent playoff games early on. The Jets skills players totally eroded over the same period of Sanchez's demise too, so it isn't just him, they all are kinda terrible.

One thing with Vince Young playing with the Packers, he's going to be on an offense with some actual skills players and fairly disciplined. I don't know if he would be great, but I think playing in Green Bay would have some definite improved cast than what Young was playing with before. Sometimes it's not hard to look good if the people around you are quality players.

earlnash, Sunday, 25 August 2013 16:58 (eleven years ago)

more picked-up pieces from catching up on bengals hard knocks:

-the climax of the oklahoma drill (full-contact one-on-one run blocking) is jermaine gresham taking on geno atkins. much to the delight of the offense, geno gets pancaked, but a controversial flase start is called.
-someone from the defense (i forget who), in conversation with a teammate, ends four consecutive sentences with the following four direct address variants: "man," "dude," "dawg," "bro." it was impressive.
-james harrison is a nut.
-aaron maybin likes to paint. he also gets cut.
-mostly what sticks is how well-run and completely non-dysfunctional this team seems to be. the coaches have been in place for some time, the players seem like they're going to play hard, there are no divas to be found, and things are 99% copacetic.

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones compared Tony Romo's offensive mind to that of New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton and said former coach and recently inducted Hall of Famer Bill Parcells endorsed the quarterback for having more say in the offensive plans.

"Bill knows Tony well and he has always had a real appreciation for Romo's approach and his intellect relative to play calling relative to seeing and understanding the game," Jones said Tuesday on his weekly radio show on KRLD-FM in Dallas. "He's unique in that way. In a way, Tony has some of the kind of skills you might see in a Sean Payton."

Jones shared a chat he had with Parcells when the Cowboys played in the Hall of Fame Game earlier this month.

Parcells coached the Cowboys from 2003 to 2006 and signed Romo as an undrafted free agent from Eastern Illinois in his first year on the job. Payton was a Cowboys assistant from 2003 to 2005 before leaving for New Orleans.

Jones said he admired that Payton called for an onside kick to start the second half of Super Bowl XLIV against the Indianapolis Colts. The Saints would win the game 31-17. It's that type of risk-taking Jones sees in Romo, and he wants to utilize it more in game plans.

"It is also just the flair for being able to see it and being creative out there," Jones said. "In visiting with Bill, he thought it was something we really ought to take advantage of is Tony's ability to see the field, call the plays and make more decisions out there."

Romo, when told of Jones' Payton comparison, said he has gotten to the point of his career "where you understand the game at a certain level."

"For me, I think sometimes I think about the game very detailed," he said. "Little things matter tremendously as far as the outcome of plays -- the releases, the differing things as far as where you want people on certain plays at what depth. And a lot of good coaches do that stuff."

"I just think you see it that way a little bit more when you get older."

Romo, who finished third in the NFL with 4,903 passing yards in 2012, is expected to take on more of a role with offensive game planning in 2013. Jones said this offseason that Romo will spend Peyton Manning-type hours at the Cowboys' practice facility to make sure the game plans are designed to help him and the rest of the offense.

"Bill had positive reports about it, as well," Jones said.

Jones added: "I say this smiling: There is no decoding. All you got to do is take it at its face. The face is Tony is going to be more involved in the making of the game plan and the calling of the plays than he's been in the past in his career, and he'll be significantly more involved. That's a change."

For the first time since he joined the Cowboys in 2007, coach Jason Garrett won't be involved in the play calling. Offensive line coach Bill Callahan will call the plays this season. Garrett will still have a presence in game planning with Romo.

Later on Tuesday, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones was asked if his father hears criticism of his decisions.

"I think it motivates him," he said. "Obviously we feel like we have a great organization in the Cowboys but we can always be better. We look for ways to be better. We do that both on the field and off the field. We're convinced we've got the 'secret sauce' to put this thing back together again and win championships."

I just can't watch preseason football but an article I read says the Bears are working in some two back sets with both Matt Forte and Michael Bush on the field at the same time. I got to say, I really like that idea. I think even with the passing attack, going back to split back setup I would think would work in the current passing game. I like the idea of one back staying back as protector, that can release on screens while the other can run a pass pattern instead of always using another wide out.

earlnash, Monday, 2 September 2013 23:56 (eleven years ago)

This works even better when one back is a very effective receiver like Forte and then you got a total banger like Bush to dump the ball off in screens. Bush is built to run in the middle of the field. It's kind of an old school backfield setup. Considering the Bears 3rd wide out is usually exceptionally physically gifted and fast but with hands of stone, I'd not sure that having Forte and Bush on the field instead of a 3rd wide out is an upgrade.

Waiting for a haircut I read a couple articles in this weeks NFL preview in ESPN the magazine. They had some computer simulator state Denver over the Seahawks to win it all and had a couple of odd clubs making the playoffs like the Bucs and I think the Dolphins winning the AFC East.

There is an article about the Seahawks and Pete Carroll's coaching style in there that is worth tracking down. It definitely sounds like a pretty uniquely ran club.

The article with Derek Mason about retiring from the NFL is a good read too.
