The Shaun Hill/Lead Armed Messiah talk in our off season thread has got me wondering, who really are the good backup QBs in the NFL?
I'm going to have to go out and see who is around riding the pine these days?
I'd have to say Kyle "Weirdbeard" Orton in Dallas is up there pretty high on the list still.
PS- I call dibs on Tebow being known as the "Lead Armed Messiah"! I think that is a pretty good knick name personally.

Based on present knowledge, it's probably Kirk Cousins.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 19 August 2013 03:14 (twelve years ago)
hasselbeck
― Mr. Snrub, Monday, 19 August 2013 10:48 (twelve years ago)
probably the wrong answer but foles maybe?
― Mordy , Monday, 19 August 2013 11:18 (twelve years ago)
or vick...
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 19 August 2013 11:34 (twelve years ago)
kyle orton based on 3 years ago maybe, but who knows what he can do now
i think matt moore is ok. he is the best backup in the afc east, vs a week field right now until we see what the rookies can do.
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 19 August 2013 11:42 (twelve years ago)
i'm pretty sure vick is gonna start
― Mordy , Monday, 19 August 2013 11:45 (twelve years ago)
yeah i am sure he will, he seems to have taken to what of the offense has been on display so far.
i actually think chad henne is a good answer to this, at least in the top 3, and ironically he is behind the worst starting qb
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 19 August 2013 12:27 (twelve years ago)
Charlie Whitehurst
Kidding. The answer's gotta be Orton. Unless it's Steve DeBerg or John Kitna

Well the new Fox Sports 1 seems to be setup to mirror Fox News coverage. I was watching a bit of it after the Reds game a couple nights ago and they had a panel discussing the Cousins injury and the Washington game in particular and they had
1- hot blonde showing a lot of leg2- Donovan McNabb3- Andy Roddick4- Gary Payton
So basically just like Fox News shows, you got a hot blonde showing a lot of leg, one guy that probably knows something you don't want to listen to and two guys with some skills some place else talking about something they really don't know that much about.
― earlnash, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 11:10 (twelve years ago)
sounds potentially even worse than the equivalent murdoch sports channel in the uk, which would be going some
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 11:26 (twelve years ago)
Cant even imagine what insight Roddick or Payton would have on the Redskins qb situation. If its as bad as Marcellus Wiley on Sportsnation (which is an embarrassment of a show even by the low standards of ESPN) then forget it.
Dont mind the blond showing the leg though.
― One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 21 August 2013 14:45 (twelve years ago)
I listen to Marcellus on the radio with Max Kellerman when I drive home. =(
LA sports media is truly heinous.

you guys there are several dudes i'd rather have than kyle orton.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 21 August 2013 17:28 (twelve years ago)
I'm not saying I like Fox Sports 1 but it does seem like they spend more time on highlights than ESPN does.
The Payton/Roddick/Kapler/McNabb roundtable discussion I saw was quite bad.

It's a pretty good list. There are a few Probowl seasons in there. There are also a few wiley veterans who have started a few games. Quite a few still yet professionally somewhat untested former college stars on that list.
― earlnash, Thursday, 22 August 2013 02:07 (twelve years ago)
Might also be a couple of future coaches in this list. You do seem to see some backup QBs that do become coaches.
― earlnash, Thursday, 22 August 2013 02:09 (twelve years ago)
Gradkowski is plenty capable of winning games he comes in to play from the bench in, but if he's out there as a starter, the team is doomed. Must be some kind of mental block.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 22 August 2013 02:13 (twelve years ago)
I'm goin with Shaun Hill here
― frogbs, Friday, 23 August 2013 15:01 (twelve years ago)
Henne is not a bad guy to have as your backup, he should probably start.
Bears and Packers are pretty fucked, being as they have terrible backups and even worse offensive lines. And play in a division with stellar defensive lines/pass rushes
― One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Friday, 23 August 2013 18:53 (twelve years ago)
Packers have an asterisk there as their pass rush is limited to one man basically.
Josh Johnson for Cincy is pretty talented. At least based on the Atlanta preseason game.
― One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Friday, 23 August 2013 18:54 (twelve years ago)
there are better guys than him on the list and he's been mediocre in the starting role, but fitzpatrick is the kind of guy who could come in for a couple games and put up the type of numbers ex-titans backup billy volek did years ago. i'm maybe being optimistic though.
― christmas candy bar (al leong), Friday, 23 August 2013 18:58 (twelve years ago)
Brock Osweiler- This dude is freaking huge like 6-8!
― earlnash, Saturday, 24 August 2013 02:09 (twelve years ago)
Of the college stars that haven't played, one of the ones I am most curious about is Ryan Mallet. That guy was a really good athlete and did some pretty crazy stuff behind kind of a shitty o-line, as he seemed to just get freakin' pounded some games and get up and throw some bullets.
― earlnash, Saturday, 24 August 2013 02:11 (twelve years ago)
David Carr is a total mystery at this point whether he can play or not, the dude has rode the pine for like 5 years and not played much at all.
― earlnash, Saturday, 24 August 2013 02:12 (twelve years ago)
He's done. Put a fork in that dude.
― One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Saturday, 24 August 2013 04:37 (twelve years ago)
I guess they are cheap or saddled with dumb contracts, but I just didn't get why the Jets didn't get a vet to push Sanchez last year let alone this season.
Looks like VY has successfully made it onto the Packers as the backup. I kind of like this move, provided that Vince Young can still run bit and be mobile. It's been a while since Young has been effective, but physically speaking he is a guy that has similar athletic skills to Aaron Rodgers. Graham Harrell and his unheralded 9 throws is going to be watching the phone.

― earlnash, Sunday, 25 August 2013 07:31 (twelve years ago)
I hope Matt Flynn banked all those bucks he got from those last two contracts, as it looks like that guy is on the outside looking in on the Raider QB job. I'm kind of curious how Terrelle Pryor will do. The guy is a stud athlete and heck he's got 2 seasons more college experience than Mark Sanchez, so maybe he will develop into something interesting.
― earlnash, Thursday, 29 August 2013 00:21 (twelve years ago)
everything i have heard about matt flynn has been negative. i watched him play a couple of really impressive games for the packers. maybe the russell wilson thing destroyed his confidence.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 29 August 2013 01:20 (twelve years ago)
Bloody set of cuts for backup QBs...there is a whole lot of NCAA yards and wins in this list of guys.

― earlnash, Monday, 2 September 2013 21:47 (twelve years ago)
quinn picked up by the jets, really the ultimate desperation move in september 2013
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 2 September 2013 22:14 (twelve years ago)
Sad thing is that Quinn might still be an upgrade for the Jets.
― earlnash, Monday, 2 September 2013 23:53 (twelve years ago)
in the half of the season quinn started last year, kcc scored under 10 pts/game. he threw 2 tds/8 ints in 8 games. i think tebow is probably a better qb.
