12-4 last week, 22-10 overall
Chiefs @ Eagles- This looks pretty even on paper to me. I’ll stick Philly at home.
Texans @ Ravens- I don’t know how to read either club. Ravens D got walked on by Denver, then the offense couldn’t do much against Cleveland. Texans have been winning kinda ugly. I’m probably wrong, but I’ll take Ravens at home.
Browns @ Vikings- The Browns defense seems ready for prime time, but the offense is just not there at all. Minnesota would be pretty dangerous if they had a top tier QB. Vikings seem better, but I could see this being close.
Giants @ Panthers- Panthers have played good enough to lose and the Giants are just not going to be any good throwing the ball 50 times a game. Panthers on paper seem a bit better, so give me Carolina.
Packers @ Bengals- Hard to take Cincy to beat Green Bay until they actually knock them off, but on paper this is a pretty even steven matchup. Green Bay. I think while Jay Gruden and the Bengals have the tools to be big passing team, I do think they would be more dangerous going into a time of possession team and just controlling the clock. They do that and keep Rogers off the field, I think it could be a pretty interesting game. I think Green Bay is vulnerable to the run and Cincy could have an interesting run game (give Bernard the rock).
Rams @ Cowboys- Rams are decent, but I just can’t see Jeff Fisher wanting to throw the ball 55 times a game. I think Dallas is going to be good on D this year. I like Dallas and hopefully they don’t play stupid (like they often do) with the turnovers/penalties.
Lions @ Washington- Washington just doesn’t look that good at all and it’s more than RGIII. It is hard to take the Lions on the road, but give me Detroit in an upset.
Bucs @ Pats- Pats. Yeesh it will be mumble and glower when those two coaches meet after the game. Cards @ Saints- Saints but I’d believe it if Arizona gives them a game. AZ should have traded for Palmer like 3 years ago.Chargers @ Titans- Both of these clubs are kind of middling mysteries to me. I guess SD.Falcons @ Dolphins- Intriquing matchup here…I really want to take Miami, but will take Atlanta on rep. Bills @ Jets- who knows…JetsColts @ 49ers- Niners will eat ‘em alive. Indy is kind of pushing Luck to have to do a bit too much.Jags @ Seahawks- Seahawks and man that is a matchup of two clubs with some funky uniforms…all metallic and green blue.Bears @ Steelers- These clubs just rarely play, which kind of seems weird considering their historical makeup. Got to think the Bears are the better club and I hope they win, but that said it is hard to think the Steelers being 0-3.Raiders @ Broncos- Broncos

brian hoyer starting for cleveland. he didn't show much in his brief run out for the cardinals, and the browns offense is not really equipped was any qb to shine, so this might kill his nfl career, but he is unlikely to be worse than weeden. who is out because he banged his thumb on a helmet?
it seems smart to go with hoyer over campbell. they are probably not winning the super bowl this year (sorry brownie) and they already know what they have with campbell, which is not much.

altho that is perhaps unfair, when josh gordon comes back (if he can stay off the syrup) you actually do have a reasonable supporting cast there

Poor Jason Campbell. He had a talent.

ryan clady out for the season is a big deal. pman can get the ball on its way quickly enough that line problems shouldn't be a big deal overall, but could mean a couple more hits per game to that fragile, geriatric frame.
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 16:42 (twelve years ago)
none of the Browns QBs had any success anywhere else either, I don't think it's because their system is just that terrible

v interesting i thot, and i feel like this makes sense of some unusual moves throughout the league
The league is headed for a two-tiered system: We may be close to being there already but the middle class of players is disappearing. We are looking at a roster makeup of five highly paid players and the rest of the team making the minimum. It is yet to be seen if this is a good or bad thing but as an agent I think it’s bad. Owners are pushing their GMs and salary cap mangers to reward just a handful of players (about four to six) and get the rest from the draft and undrafted free agent pool. Why is this happening? The new CBA has made draft picks and undrafted free agents so attractive that teams will part with solid players once they hit thirty years old and bet on developing a younger guy, saving money and potentially avoiding the risk of having an older player get injured. When an older player gets injured there are exponential fiscal liabilities such as the injury protection benefit, carrying a vested veteran on IR, pension requirements, workers’ compensation and/or other collectively bargained injury benefits such as the line of duty benefit. It seems like the days of starting but not being marquee Guards, Centers, Tight Ends, and/or Safeties making $3 to $5 million a year are disappearing. Look for the money poured into Corners, QBs, DE’s and left tackles to continue and to be accelerated versus other positions. Once this system takes root, I truly believe careers for non-pro bowl players, the middle class, will get shorter and shorter. The flip side is more young players will hit the field sooner. I also believe one fall-out of this pattern is the record setting pace of penalties and sacks that we saw in the first two weeks.More emphasis will be put on coaches who know how to develop young talent. They will be coveted and paid handsomely by smart organizations. We could see continued sloppy football in the first quarter of every season to come. When this makeup becomes coagulated throughout the league, It will be interesting to see how a locker room of haves and have-nots will gel.

This trade swings Colts no matter how you look at it. They're looking at a pretty good 2013 season, which means their rd 1 pick would've probably been in the 18-28 range. Richardson was a #3 pick talent just one season ago. Colts now have the #1 and #3 players from the 2012 draft. Cleveland? Bupkus.

― polyphonic, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 23:27 (twelve years ago)
We drafted him 3rd AND traded another pick to move up and grab him. For those counting at home that's the 3rd overall pick plus a second pick traded away for a late 1st round pick..way to go.
― Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 23:38 (twelve years ago)
We drafted him 3rd AND traded another pick to move up and grab him.
You traded four picks to move up and grab him I think.
― polyphonic, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 23:49 (twelve years ago)
Fwiw I think most Colts fans are hating this trade. No one is down with the new Pep Hamilton focus on the running game, and considering the extant pass-blocking problems + losing Ballard (who was an excellent blocker) and ongoing Allen injury (also an A+ blocker), no one wanted them to throw away a 1st Round pick to spend on OLine in order to essentially double-down on committing to the run game. Everyone in Indy wants more passing.
Those same fans also tend to not believe in the running game opening up the passing game (I guess their offensive schemes, as they're set up now, telegraph a lot to the defense?). I was pumped that they brought in Bradshaw, whom I think is more than enough, but idk super talented, young rb to pair with Luck seems like an interesting enough proposition imo.
― Call me Shitmael (CompuPost), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 23:51 (twelve years ago)
Falcons are in deep deep trouble. Biermann: out for season. Ewing: Out for season. Weatherspoon: out till week 11. Jackson: out for four weeks. Samuel: gimpy. R.White: gimpy. Offensive line: sieve.
― One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 23:56 (twelve years ago)
I think having balance between the pass and run is still the way to go in NFL. If you can run the ball, you got options and you can really chew the clock up. I think the later Manning Colts teams definitely lost something after the running game went out.
The thing I think Trent Richardson could add to the Colts is coming out of the backfield to catch the ball, which he did decently last year (51 catches 7.2 y/r). Heck, Andrew Luck did plenty of handing off of the rock even at Stanford as that team was also really, really good at running the ball. Having a good play action game makes a difference.
You never know on injuries and who is going to get drafted with the pick, but this seems like a good deal for the Colts and perhaps even not a bad idea for the Browns. NFL trades are rare and odd because the trade deadline is so early in the season. It would be more interesting I think if clubs could deal up to say game 9 or 10 (kind of the equivalent to say the MLB version). The clubs that would really, really benefit is maybe a club that loses a starting key player, but is really good everywhere else and maybe they could bet to get someone to try to go 'all in'.
― earlnash, Thursday, 19 September 2013 00:11 (twelve years ago)
For a sport that talking about the game itself is a big business, I think it would pay some dividends on having a more open trading schedule.
― earlnash, Thursday, 19 September 2013 00:12 (twelve years ago)
the moral of the story is don't draft a running back 3rd. hell, don't draft a running back in the first round. richardson is a minimal upgrade over bradshaw.
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 19 September 2013 00:15 (twelve years ago)
yeah, the very worst part of this is what the browns gave over to get richardson in the first place obv, and particularly in that context they got too little for him 15 months later. but at the same time indy have overpaid for an RB in the 2013 nfl, one who is not without question marks and for all that he looks to be a good player he is not the kind of guy that is ever going to take over a game.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 19 September 2013 00:49 (twelve years ago)
also, and this should never go unsaid, fuck jim irsay
he's such an ass
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 19 September 2013 00:50 (twelve years ago)
This trade swings Colts no matter how you look at it.
well this isn't true. if richardson continues to be an average running back and the browns pick a really high impact guy next year with their extra first round pick then it would certainly swing in the browns favor.
