― "renegade" gnome (remy bean), Thursday, February 9, 2012 8:20 AM (10 minutes ago)

dont be a dick, remy. forks edited my post to say the exact opposite of what i wrote. literally every edit he's made to a thread title has been met w/ groans and requests to undo the change

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 9 February 2012 18:33 (twelve years ago) link

and he does shit like that all the time thats always met w/groans, its like the boy who cried wolf except theres always wolfs

full disclosure: i assumed you didnt really care and were just trying to stir shit/fuck around w/forks like the facebook thread (i think this is what remy was getting at)

i learned that mods are still dicks years after i hung up my lawyer badge

all of us, 24/7?

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Thursday, 9 February 2012 18:37 (twelve years ago) link

kinda scrolled this thread but it should be noted that while maybe we do need more comedy mod edits we certainly don't need more comedy mod edits from forksclovetofu

ok fine, that's kind of unfair but i'll take that as an occupational hazard. however, but lets not ignore the issue at hand

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 9 February 2012 18:41 (twelve years ago) link

gr8080, i kind of agree w/ u baot various mod edits being unfair, but the fact that you spend a lot of time on the 'all mods are stupid' kick makes me/others not pay attention to your legitimate requests.

"renegade" gnome (remy bean), Thursday, 9 February 2012 18:41 (twelve years ago) link

There are around 800,000 cops in America. Something like 30,000 cases of police brutality reported in 2006. You have to assume that some of those are false, but you also have to assume that some don't get reported, so I'm fine with 30,000. That's like 3%. Now obviously, a number of those cases of police brutality are going to be attributable to the same bad cop. So, less than 3%. That's a goddamned good rate!

again its kind of unfair for you to take several different instances of me singling out a specific mod/action as me claiming "all mods are stupid".

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 9 February 2012 18:46 (twelve years ago) link

will someone please explain to me what it is like to be a mod

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Thursday, 9 February 2012 18:46 (twelve years ago) link

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Thursday, 9 February 2012 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

personally I get really irritated with the whole "cops are regular people just doing their jobs" schtick - the kind of people who want to be cops, in general, are violence-prone authority-fetishists.

gr8080, you have called me a dick in the last ten minutes! And you expect me to be sympathetic to you. And you know what? I am. I think/hope that I engage with you whenever you want, I think it's an imp. part of being a mod. And I think you, k3vin, max, et al. all bring up a lot of very good points, and I'm glad you challenge things – it keeps shit honest – but when you (plural, not singling you out, or even highlighting you) do so with stereotyped logic and broad strokes it makes me unwilling to pay a lot of heed to the more valid parts of your arguments.

remy i called you a dick because you were painting me with broad brushstrokes and applying stereotyped logic to my argument; i didnt call you a dick because you are a mod.

srs level of irony in your last post is killing me

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 9 February 2012 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

Grady next time you call for a utopian board where everyone is unbanned and everyone can just have fun and be dicks to one another with impunity it's probably worth remembering that time you threw your toys out of the pram because someone decided to be a dick to you. Albeit in a fairly mild and harmless way. Generally speaking though, I don't think mods editing other people's posts is really on, but the irony here is amusing.

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:04 (twelve years ago) link

well those things to tend to be less fun when theres a power disparity

lag∞n, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:06 (twelve years ago) link

I vote that every gr80 post be edited by mods

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:06 (twelve years ago) link

pro tip for getting along on ILX: don't call people dicks!

lag∞n, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:09 (twelve years ago) link

Basically a poster with a load of people prepared to back him up slamming on a poster who doesn't have that backup = power disparity. It's the way power dynamics work in any group situation.

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:11 (twelve years ago) link

wouldn't it make more sense for the poster w/ a load of people prepared to back him up to be a mod and the person who doesn't not to be a mod

iatee, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:12 (twelve years ago) link

I have zero problems w/ anyone being a dick-- mod or otherwise-- as long as we can call each other out like we are here w/o having mods edit our posts or mob rule banning ppl.

i may be wishing for an impossible utopia but I'm not contradicting myself.

xposts

Would still love a straight answer from max to my question. C&P posts from beachville and SMC aren't a straight answer. I don't care what you or they think about U.S. cops -- I'm interested in what you think about ILX mods. Are we all dicks, 24/7?

yeah but having mod powers is like having a conversation w/a cop, its a power disparity on a systematic level, the distinction seems obvious and non trivial from my pov, i wouldnt compare forks actions to police brutality tho it more like when a cop want to have jocular banter w/local teens and they have to tolerate it cause hes a cop

lag∞n, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:43 (twelve years ago) link

no you silly, of course not

max, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:43 (twelve years ago) link

find it so hard to banter with jjjusten and forks, it's always in the back of my mind that they are all-powerful lizard overlords

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:48 (twelve years ago) link

That's great to know. It's frustrating that I had to check. It's frustrating when posters toss "mods are dicks" out there without meaning it 100%, because it fertilizes the ground for other posters to believe it and repeat it, even if they've never had a bad moderator interaction on the site. xp

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:50 (twelve years ago) link

I haven't had a negative feeling about a mod in years, but then I have an authority fetish, so...
