pro tip for getting along on ILX: don't call people dicks!

There's a power disparity even in cases where there are no mods involved, dude.

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

remy just change the i to a u under my new system then it will be maybe kind of a cute post

Basically a poster with a load of people prepared to back him up slamming on a poster who doesn't have that backup = power disparity. It's the way power dynamics work in any group situation.

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:11 (twelve years ago) link

wouldn't it make more sense for the poster w/ a load of people prepared to back him up to be a mod and the person who doesn't not to be a mod

iatee, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:12 (twelve years ago) link

I have zero problems w/ anyone being a dick-- mod or otherwise-- as long as we can call each other out like we are here w/o having mods edit our posts or mob rule banning ppl.

i may be wishing for an impossible utopia but I'm not contradicting myself.

Would still love a straight answer from max to my question. C&P posts from beachville and SMC aren't a straight answer. I don't care what you or they think about U.S. cops -- I'm interested in what you think about ILX mods. Are we all dicks, 24/7?

yeah but having mod powers is like having a conversation w/a cop, its a power disparity on a systematic level, the distinction seems obvious and non trivial from my pov, i wouldnt compare forks actions to police brutality tho it more like when a cop want to have jocular banter w/local teens and they have to tolerate it cause hes a cop

lag∞n, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:43 (twelve years ago) link

no you silly, of course not

max, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:43 (twelve years ago) link

find it so hard to banter with jjjusten and forks, it's always in the back of my mind that they are all-powerful lizard overlords

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:48 (twelve years ago) link

That's great to know. It's frustrating that I had to check. It's frustrating when posters toss "mods are dicks" out there without meaning it 100%, because it fertilizes the ground for other posters to believe it and repeat it, even if they've never had a bad moderator interaction on the site. xp

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:50 (twelve years ago) link

I haven't had a negative feeling about a mod in years, but then I have an authority fetish, so...

beachville, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:51 (twelve years ago) link

it's frustrating to deal with mods being dicks

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:57 (twelve years ago) link

mods are usually pretty cool people ime like I can't think of a better person to be a mod than wmc, really, but there is def a circling of wagons whenever something like this happens. it seems pretty obv that this whole thing shoulda been "yeah forks stop editing posts and threat titles, that's dumb, okay forks is gonna stop, okay lock thread". instead it became a clusterfuck cause of the circling the wagons thing.

iatee otm.

can we revisit:

Basically a poster with a load of people prepared to back him up slamming on a poster who doesn't have that backup = power disparity. It's the way power dynamics work in any group situation.

― Matt DC, Thursday, February 9, 2012 9:11 AM (44 minutes ago)

so making a point that other people agree with is unfair? this is bonkers!

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:58 (twelve years ago) link

It's not necessarily unfair, but it reveals a power disparity.

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:00 (twelve years ago) link

if a lot of people are slamming on a mod and no one is backing up the mod then maybe........... the mod is wrong

max, Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:01 (twelve years ago) link

instead it became a clusterfuck cause of the circling the wagons thing.

dude it took 6 hours for any mod that wasnt forks to post on this thread, hardly seems like circling the wagons.

Thu'um gang (jjjusten), Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:02 (twelve years ago) link

also max maybe replace "a lot of people" with "the same 4 or so people that come out of the woodwork everytime we have a thread like this" and u may see the startling truth u seek

Thu'um gang (jjjusten), Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

srsly, i'm suggesting that's not a very good comparison.

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

i mean if its the same 4 or so people than whats the power disparity?

max, Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:04 (twelve years ago) link

so making a point that other people agree with is unfair? this is bonkers!

I'm not talking about disagreement, I'm talking about aggressively ganging up.

I think the circling the wagons thing happened because no one actually thought Grady was particularly pissed off because, well, it was something so mindlessly trivial. I don't think anyone's been condoning what Forks did, it just... didn't seem to matter very much.

I mean mods aren't cops and the comparison is pretty facile, there isn't a systemic bias against people who complain because if a mod did seriously overstep boundaries and abuse their power it would be undone pretty damn quickly and in particular cases that mod would be stripped of their powers altogether (as had actually happened in the past).

great point noted, ill added to the pile of other great points youve made in this thread

thks!

Dr Frogbius (darraghmac), Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:06 (twelve years ago) link

fwiw it always seems to be the same mods who ~come out of the woodwork~ on these threads too. like i never see Ned jump in on these discussions

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:06 (twelve years ago) link

(I mean mods are actually accountable to other mods)

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:06 (twelve years ago) link

not at all like cops nope

lag∞n, Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:07 (twelve years ago) link

it cant be a serious situation because if it was a serious situation then something wouldve been done abt it why dont you see

lag∞n, Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:07 (twelve years ago) link

feel like mods should probably just act quickly according to their guidelines regardless of how "trivial" they find a posters request

max, Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:08 (twelve years ago) link

feel like a lot of this would go away if forks just said "hey i'll cool it with the comedy edits" so i'll just be holding my breath waiting for that to happen.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:09 (twelve years ago) link

posters rool, mods drool

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:09 (twelve years ago) link

I don't think Ned has had mod powers in years! If he does, I don't think he's exercised them.

xp to mh: no argument there

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:10 (twelve years ago) link

wrt gr8080s point abt which mods weigh in: i think that prob some mods just dont really want to get involved in this stuff, i mean its not like its a great time for anyone really - before i was a mod i always would get bummed out that stuff wasnt more transparent so i kinda set that as a goal when i became a mod. its not always an awesome job, but i think its for the good of the board and so on and zzzzzzz

Thu'um gang (jjjusten), Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:10 (twelve years ago) link

A lot of this would go away if mods just said were taking away forks mod powers so that he can now only inflict horrible jokes upon you in the way other users of ilxor.com can inflict horrible jokes upon each other

lag∞n, Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:11 (twelve years ago) link

the thing I don't understand is why all gr80s most recent posts in this thread are kind of anti-mod when its the mods that are writing them

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:11 (twelve years ago) link

btw this is now on IMP because mod req is for 3 post threads like "hey please edit my poll" "sorry we cant" "oh ok", not whatever this is turning into

― Thu'um gang (jjjusten), Thursday, February 9, 2012 12:42 PM (2 hours ago)

whew avoided a catastrophe here btw

diln (k3vin k.), Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:11 (twelve years ago) link

I don't really think we need to go much further down this rabbit hole of pointless antagonism given that pretty much we're all agreed that mods editing other people's posts isn't really cool and the rest of it is just turning into shrill noise at this stage.

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:12 (twelve years ago) link

did forks agree?

call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:14 (twelve years ago) link

well if forks does it again will he be stripped of his powers, much the same way that repeat rule breakers are banned from
