tbh I don't think there's a hard and fast rule about banning due to real name-dropping, not even really an offense unless that person has expressly said not to use their real name previously, which wasn't the case in the DJP/Morbius incident, I think. I know I've used DJP's name occasionally but I don't think he cares?

I've previously argued that using a person's /first/ name, and that alone, on a thread isn't really that big of a deal even if they want some semblance of anonymity, unless they have a name that's either uniquely identifiable on the board or uniquely identifiable in the world at large. For instance, googling nabisco's first name definitely leads you to him pretty quickly, whereas googling "mike" isn't going to do much to track me down on ilx, let alone in the world at large.

I think it's reasonable to account for the fact that some ILXors have actual IRL overenthusiastic/creepy fans and others don't when making these sorts of decisions.

still not sure how i feel about realnaming = ban tbh (ftr nobody ever needs to be banned for realnaming me unless they're posting something libelous, etc), think tempbans are good idea in general and maybe could be deployed more liberally, like if you are posting just way too much etc. i remember the greenspun outages back in the day could be helpful in keeping this place fresh and in perspective. would argue this thread is useful as a quarantine and as a punctuation mark on the silliness of 'beefs', forcing whoever is shitting on whatever thread to consciously go to another thread and do their little internet fight there. think yellowcarding should be brought back (though that was just a noize thing right?) and used.

the suggestion is that sal (realnaming permission sought) was not trying to solicit creepy superfans, if that were demonstrably the case then it would be a different matter

i'm generally against the tempban in this case -- it was a total dick move, really nasty and uncalled for, and as jj said deployed in a different way than the DJP/morbs one, but turangilia caught enough shit from other posters that he(?) probably feels terrible about it now so idk. agree with djp

when the entire 'harm' of a post can and is immediately undone by editing the offending post so it's googleproofed, a ban of any length of time does seem very extreme. do we still do yellowcards? that's totally yellowcard territory. that's fuckin' ocean avenue right there.

i think the context of the "irl zing" should be taken into context and suggests the need for a time-out. but then if i got temp-banned for typos and overposting i'd probably be grateful.

it's really going to be hard to make a decision about this issue until every single person who posts on ilx weighs in with their opinion

Creepy superfans are real, even to obscure has-beens like myself, and are the reason I am very coy on ILX (ILM, mostly) when people ask about my real identity, even without nasty intent. Whipping that shit out in a penis waving context is simply uncool, and I don't think a time-out is a huge deal.

think everybdy else is just doing a good enough job of not being dicks anymore, so they arent getting yellowcarded. OR they're being real dicks and getting banned. OR mods are just chiillin, smokin a bowl.

I think the point is that most people post here under a pseudonym for a reason, and breaching that pseudonymity should warrant an e-spanking.

Particularly when it's pointedly vengeful.

i kinda feel like, if a poster offends you by calling you by your real name, or being a fucking dick, it's within your rights to ask mods for a tempban. whether or not they do so is another thing, but if they do, everyone should chill. a tempban is hardly a big deal.
