Ah, let's play the synonym game, TWU.
ILX: the board that protects the insane and truly damaging and bans those who annoy the mods a little.

Obviously I understand the 'truly damaging' part, but what kind of social conscience doesn't want to protect the insane? I mean, what? Are we to be driven from our homes with flaming torches instead?
xposts to mh, yeah, that is actually a sensible iteration of it. Though of course in communities like this there is a certain amount of attraction/repulsion - sometimes coming to "your" online community can be helpful rather than harmful, other times... uh, no.

TWU you don't have to write the word to be engaging in that activity. And I'm not calling you out specifically or even referring specifically to this thread. And I'm not saying "let's forgive everybody for everything!" I'm saying: these incidents could more productively and compassionately be dealt with in a case-by-case basis instead of this simmering cesspool of resentment and whispering

ive been wondering recently what ilx could do to better help people who are going through difficult times, particularly those who seem like they might be a danger to themselves, like if some sort of official policy and/or relationship w/professional help would be a good idea

cause all the suicidal and quasi suicidal talk that goes on around here worries me, tho maybe people feel like having this outlet where they wont be instantly shunted into treatment or diagnosed or w/e is helpful, idk

It's worrying but I think it can and has also been used in a really manipulative and destructive way on board which has gone unpunished which isn't really helpful either imo.

I'm notably bitter on the "stop talking about how you're going to do it" point, but that's mostly because:a. we're not professionalsb. I was repeatedly assured that drunken "oh, I'm going to kill myself" threats were just dumb threats until I walked into my living room to see someone downing a bottle of pills years ago
idk, life

xp Maybe read through that sentence again, and see if a word jumps out at you as unhelpful?
― Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 18 October 2012 15:31 (eleven years ago) link
Nope, J, it is a not roundabout way of criticizing your (plural, but please do include yourself, J) moderation policies, which are ad hoc, emotion-laden, and pretty useless in a real crisis. Shaming is lame; I criticize in the naive hopes that y'all will get it one day.
emil.y: I hear you, but that "and" is not an "or", and I stand by it.
flamboyant: Kinda have nothing to say to that, as I am not sure it has any content -- but I don't see "crazy" and "destructive" as describing the same sets of human beings, and kinda resent any implication that I do.
lag -- good question! Dunno the answer.

I am quite certain that I am now going to be called "crazy" and have all kinds of aspersions cast on my mental health for asking what should just be common consideration, but:
I find these kinds of clusterfucks and personal pile-ons incredibly triggering (of anxiety, of depression, of paranoia) and really rather damaging. It's odd to me, that people complain about my "crazyness" and then dive straight into exactly the behaviour I have asked them not to do, because it makes things worse, not better.
I am asking, as nicely as I can: can we please, for once, just not do this.
If you don't like me, can you please just leave me alone. These days, when I don't like someone, I try to avoid them. I certainly don't go following their twitter and looking through it, searching for things to ~get offended at~ and drag back to ILX in order to trigger another clusterfuck of pearl-clutching outrage.
Haven't you had enough? Aren't you bored of this yet? Because I really am. Enough is enough. ENBB, I'm especially sick of your concern trolling. I get it. I don't like you, you don't like me. But you can seemingly never resist the chance to put your oar in when I get mentioned, and turn it into the biggest clusterfuck you can, all the while, wearing this "no, really, I'm not trying to clusterfuck her, I just can't seem to resist talking about her, talking shit about her, at length, at every opportunity I get." While calling for me to be "punished" for the clusterfucks you are busy rousing up.

This is complete and total bullshit and exactly the type of behavior you pull time and time again. I have talked about you on board exactly one other time. Mostly I just ignore you.

Sorry to be so oblique, but srsly, given the circumstances that spawned this thread revive, can i please appeal to a general sense of decency and ask people to not derail this into another bout of ilx infighting, myself included.
― I'M THE ONLY ON (jjjusten), Thursday, 18 October 2012 15:44 (eleven years ago) link
It's not been "ignored." It gets brought up by ENBB on every thread. Use your ctrl-f on the past 3 or 4 clusterfucks of this week. Search for my username, search for ENBB's. You tell me who's been ignoring this.
― White Chocolate Cheesecake, Thursday, 18 October 2012 15:45 (eleven years ago) link

― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 18 October 2012 15:45 (eleven years ago) link
then dive straight into exactly the behaviour I have asked them not to do, because it makes things worse, not better.
WCC, you ask people to not engage in certain types of behaviour around ILX, but people also ask you not to engage in certain types of behaviour around ILX -- on both ends it seems to have similar results? (down to: lots and lots of people will actually stop what you ask, some won't, and most will have no idea you've ever asked / sometimes you might go "oh yeah" to someone, sometimes you might go "fuck off" to someone else, [and presumably] often you'll never see a thread to notice someone asked.)

― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 18 October 2012 15:46 (eleven years ago) link
TWU, there are two kind of 'and' uses that are possible here. One is the conjunction within the sentence of two separate things, so 'the insane' and 'the truly damaging' are discrete (though possibly overlapping) entities. In this case you are pulling those of us with mental problems into the argument and saying we should be punished (or at least, not 'protected'). The other use is the one you are claiming now, which is 'the insane and the truly damaging' as one descriptive phrase. In that case, you are either pulling in mental problems as an intensifier, which is STILL REALLY INSULTING, or it is pointless to bring it up at all and your writing is redundant.
