it sounds to me like repurposed biblical language (honor your father and mother) so yeah, basically.

it is also used in standard wedding ceremonies

and in the Percy Sledge classic, "When a Man Honors a Woman"

yeah, probably. but it was not presented in a gendered manner -- everyone was to honor the people on either side of them (and while it was supposed to be boy/girl, that went out the window if there was an imbalance)
