it's probably overly florid, I just don't buy that it's secretly sexist

also prob there's a cultural context too that makes it sound less weird to me idiomatically

googling 'honoring women' is very telling about how the general culture uses the term

Outside of "honoring" specific women (i.e. giving them an award), it's almost exclusively used in the conservative religious context, says my google searching.

in the context of "recognize the contributions of generally" as opposed to in personal relationships seems a little different

ok idk, obv this isn't the hill i want to die on. i do think this language is probably far more in use than was argued on men's blog thread.

in grade school gym/phys ed we weirdly had to do like two weeks of square dancing every year. no idea why. but one of the tunes began by demanding that you 'honor your partner' and 'honor your corner', which meant bowing shallowly to the person of opposite gender on either side of you.

Use in square dancing, the dance where rules are barked at you, is probably the strongest argument one could make for the term's conservative foundations.

yeah, probably. but it was not presented in a gendered manner -- everyone was to honor the people on either side of them (and while it was supposed to be boy/girl, that went out the window if there was an imbalance)

mookieproof, Thursday, 19 September 2013 00:18 (ten years ago) link

want to congratulate darraghmac on officially being less chill than Mordy at this point in the ilx feud over privilege.

he named karen tregaskin. i think it's fair to assume he would include me amongst the sheeple. obviously he feels the perceived defection of dayo v acutely.

i didn't think it would seem like an attack! just wanted to let you know your tireless work against the forces that dismiss swms has not gone unnoticed.

and the endless privtalk is p fuckin tiresome like even at midday or w/e

quite racist, don't mind rap (darraghmac), Thursday, 19 September 2013 03:39 (ten years ago) link

haha i'm sorry. it wasn't a serious attack. i'm not at all chill so the last few times i've read ilx i've been like, "i really feel like i should address all these jabs darraghmac is throwing." i've given Mordy a lot of attention in the past, but I see you, darragh.

xp so tiresome! not at all like endlessly posting about how every time someone weighs in about racism or sexism they're being insufficiently smart/lowering the discourse/shouting over white men in anti-intellectual fashion

horseshoe, Thursday, 19 September 2013 03:41 (ten years ago) link

tbf that's mordy's position!

i dont doubt the discourse is far above my head or anything i just wish there were busier movie threads or w/e to distract me at work

quite racist, don't mind rap (darraghmac), Thursday, 19 September 2013 03:42 (ten years ago) link

i am trying to figure out why this stuff makes me so mad. it's not like i think the privilege paradigm is perfect. and when Mordy is posting about how people's investment in identity politics obscures class structure, i think he often has a point. but other times, you, darragh, and Mordy, seem to me to take a fundamentally ungenerous position in what you call the privtalk discussions, where because the conversation is structured around experience, you a priori don't get to seem "smart" and because seeming "smart" is the highest good, those conversations have no value. lol i know but it reminds me of grad school.

horseshoe, Thursday, 19 September 2013 03:45 (ten years ago) link

xp okay i'm obviously talking about Mordy and not you, then. that was a helpful clarification!
