Pointless Mutual Antagonism

So a fuss about reviving old Dog Latin threads has apparently resulted in three permanent bans and a lot of bad blood. I doubt very much you would have had 597's interventions had legitimate questions about modding policy been dealt with, but instead you've been incredibly high-handed about it. There doesn't seem to be any coherent banning policy -- perhaps there never was, but at least questions were thrashed out, and mods would engage in arguments. There's a tendency to lock any threads questioning them now.

I mean, this is basically how Nazi Germany started, is it not?

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

The reasons threads like the last one are being locked is because this is the Mod Request forum and we're trying to keep it clear for actual mod requests, hence the creation of I Must Protest. If someone wants to move it to that board that'd be great.

Enrique, you've been engaging in this debate and you haven't been banned. Because even if I don't agree with you, you've at least been raising points rather than using a troll sockpuppet to be pointlessly confrontational.

It's very, very difficult to apply 100% consistency across all cases of mod action because ILX is so enormous and so much goes under the radar. There isn't a single person here who has time to read every single thread and take every single poster's behaviour into account, and I wish people would take that into account when talking about inconsistency.

I agree there should be something in the FAQ about the sort of behaviour that will definitely get you banned, but there's always going to be a bit of grey area about what does and doesn't step over that line.

Matt DC, Thursday, 19 July 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

The other thing is that Stet and Keith have always been very clear on their line that, if you engage with them politely then they'll answer you. If posters just act outright rude from the start or go "lol Nazis" it's understandable they're going to be less inclined to respond immediately.

Matt DC, Thursday, 19 July 2007 11:18 (eighteen years ago)

If indeed at all.

Matt DC, Thursday, 19 July 2007 11:24 (eighteen years ago)

Also sadly I don't have time to get into an enormous meta-debate about this today because like all the other mods I have a job and a busy life and actual work to do. Mod numbers are depleted enough as it is right now (yes we need more of them, yes we need more US mods) - I'm sorry if it appears high handed on uncommunicative but I'm not going to say any more on this subject until this evening at least.

Matt DC, Thursday, 19 July 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

quitney you're full of shrek

blueski, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:38 (eighteen years ago)

damn, custos thread revive friday is going to be a solo gig then?

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

basically my mod req is unban passantino and the other guy (assuming they are still banned) coz their four days are up; and unban acrobat cos none of this stuff would have started if the mods had engaged reasonably with them/"us". this is the first time i've felt like i've belonged to an ilx streetgang -- when my soldiers are gunned down.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

I have been fine this week, Passantino may be gone for some time though.

xpost

is it? ol' dom p's ILM ban took about three days to be explained.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

hence the creation of I Must Protest

sounds like free speech zone

RJG, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

This is ideally still the case. Should've explained the ILM ban earlier, you're right, was up to my eyes and still am. We don't lock threads questioning us, though, or shouldn't.

But we do move them to IMP, not because it's a free speech thing, but because without admin log it can be hard to tell what requests are already done, so anything open on ModReq should really only be a bug/mod request still needing action. I'll move this to IMP now.

basically my mod req is unban passantino and the other guy (assuming they are still banned) coz their four days are up; and unban acrobat cos none of this stuff would have started if the mods had engaged reasonably with them/"us".
Dom emailed me, and we've talked about his ban. 597, eh, sockpuppet trollery be frowned upon.

stet, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

you've also received an email from someone else tho?

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

no, not carmody!

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

No...?

stet, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

but because without admin log it can be hard to tell what requests are already done

Part of why I still think this is a key feature.

John Justen, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

Just trying to cement my "broken record" reputation.

John Justen, Thursday, 19 July 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

So, Dom = permabanned, 597 = banned (maybe perma, maybe not), right?

John Justen, Thursday, 19 July 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

It seems 597 actually *was* Dom, in recent days anyway.

stet, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, that's bizarre.

John Justen, Thursday, 19 July 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

Hi

Just to set the record straight, 597 was an account I registered ages ago. When Dom got banned he asked me for the details so he could state his case. I logged in a few times whilst he was doing his thing and posted things like "Ooh aren't I rascal" which was sort of piss taking sort of meant to make his more aggressive comments seem a little less serious. Anyway I would like to distance myself from the more offensive comments made by 597. I don't generally go around calling people "Nazis" or "aspies" and have very little interest in Guardian columnists or the physical appearance of Amy Winehouse. Dom's an interesting person but I really wouldn't want to be him.

acrobat, Thursday, 19 July 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

For my part, I engineered this whole thing as a drastic means of derailing the "jokes, bruv" meme.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 19 July 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

I kept confusing "597" with a totally different poster with a numerical username. This does quite a bit to remove my tremendous bafflement of the events of the last few days.

John Justen, Friday, 20 July 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not actually sure that last bit qualifies as a sentence, but whatever.

John Justen, Friday, 20 July 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i thought 597 was gareth. this is all very entertaining, keep it up!

creme1, Friday, 20 July 2007 02:24 (eighteen years ago)

Ha! Well, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought that's who it was.

John Justen, Friday, 20 July 2007 02:31 (eighteen years ago)

god I'm glad that's sorted out. all the lengthy bits seemed very dom and the one-liners clearly weren't, for a while, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what in the fuck was going on at all, unless dom had some kind of goofy twin who was just like him except for saying things like "I've eaten all the cakes!" or whatever

El Tomboto, Friday, 20 July 2007 02:48 (eighteen years ago)

hahahahaha how did I miss the interesting parts of this

How can people be so heartless
How can people be so cruel
Easy to be hard
Easy to be cold

How can people have no feelings
How can they ignore their friends
Easy to be proud
Easy to say no

And especially people
Who care about strangers
Who care about evil
And social injustice
Do you only
Care about the bleeding crowd?
How about a needing friend?
I need a friend

How can people be so heartless
You know I'm hung up on you
Easy to give in
Easy to help out

And especially people
Who care about strangers
Who say they care about social injustice
Do you only
Care about the bleeding crowd
How about a needing friend?
I need a friend

How can people have no feelings
How can they ignore their friends
Easy to be hard
Easy to be cold
Easy to be proud
Easy to say no
