Very long threads

(Yes, I know about bookmarks. This is not about bookmarks.)

If you load all posts then threads like 2008 USP(G)ET pt. II: counting the days to 2012 primary thread 1 are long enough to cause problems on old hardware or over slow connections (e.g. click here to load all the posts in that thread: 2008 USP(G)ET pt. II: counting the days to 2012 primary thread 1). Obviously there's a case for keeping things in one place though and it's awesome that nu-ILX can handle threads of this size without batting an eyelid, but it can make looking back for a comment difficult. So how about a preference to paginate threads at, say, 100/500/1000 posts?

good idea

while we're on or near the subject, i do think it's lame that it's the middle of the thread that's hidden -- what's the point of displaying the first hundred posts every time?

i think this is a good idea btw, depends on how "paginate" is handled.

I think the idea here is that if it's a thread you haven't seen before, you can get a sense of what it's about before deciding to read further. And it's 50 posts, not 100. But it could be argued that that's still too many, that most of the time you know what the thread's about within the first 10 posts.

Such as this one.

wait, what was this about? I bookmarked.

This pagination thing is just a suggestion. It does seem like the way very long threads are handled need some more thought though.

after we get out of the election season, will there be any other hugh jass threads? why code around a 1-thread problem?

just lock that one and start a new thread, if it's crashing for a lot of people.

goole, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

and make sure it has a good title this time

hahaha seriously

What should be the maximum number of posts for a thread before a mandatory lock-down takes place and another one gets started?

i think this is a problem even for threads much shorter than the election thread even. it would be nice.

pagination sux. If the thread's that big, it's probably easier to use NuSearch to find it anyway. Otherwise you're gonna have to:
Open first big page.
Look for comment
Open second big page
Look for comment
Open third big page
Look for comment
etc etc
