Whatever happened to anonymous posting on I Love TMI?

It doesn't seem to be working anymore, why is that?

Tuomas, Friday, 31 October 2008 10:09 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, I saw that. Not that I ever did, honoh.

Mark G, Friday, 31 October 2008 17:30 (sixteen years ago)

Doesn't anyone know what's happened? Mods?

Tuomas, Monday, 3 November 2008 12:32 (sixteen years ago)

Every time a board is opened to unregistered posters, it gets spam-bombed, mods have to do a lot of cleanup work, we close it to unreg again.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 3 November 2008 14:01 (sixteen years ago)

But I haven't noticed much spam at all on ILTMI, and I'm supposed to be a mod there... Did it really get spam-bombed? When did that happen?

Tuomas, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

Can you do a similar thing to what moderators have - i.e. "post anonymously" even though you're still logged in?

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 14:11 (sixteen years ago)

or a click box, "anonymise post name" function?

Mark G, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 14:27 (sixteen years ago)

It seems unregistered posters can still post to I Rate Everything, so why has this feature been removed from ILTMI? What's the deal here, mods?

Tuomas, Monday, 10 November 2008 11:38 (sixteen years ago)

They hate our freedom. Clearly.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Monday, 10 November 2008 12:25 (sixteen years ago)

Not sure, but if you guys got hit with a mayan end times blast, it probably got locked up at that point.

CHARMING LMAO (John Justen), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:24 (sixteen years ago)

I would suspect that some of IRE's mods may have been able to make a deal with mr. mayan end times, whereas ILTMI's mods probably would not be given the same "respect"

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:29 (sixteen years ago)

and yes it is unfortunate that there are people out there who would appear dead set on coming back repeatedly to ruin nice things for other people

I still don't get it... If this guy is a known troll, can't his IP address be blocked? Also, the Mayan end times spam pretty much stopped after the first few days, even though unregistered posting was still allowed. I don't really think this a problem me and Roxy and Kate couldn't handle.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 11:29 (sixteen years ago)

You can't post unregistered either.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

Anyway, I think it's a bit weird that this was done without any notice, and even sitewide mods don't seem to know exactly why it was done or by whom... I'm not saying this is a "democracy" where we should have "rights", but some transparency would be nice.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 18:44 (sixteen years ago)

Tuomas, I am sorry that some terrible mod got sick of cleaning up tons of spamflooding and took away your inalienable right to post anonymously about what you choose to throw your dick into.

CHARMING LMAO (John Justen), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

also, this is getting moved to I Must Protest

CHARMING LMAO (John Justen), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

There's a simple solution to this:

Leave the spamflooding alone. If it gets to be overwhelming for the TMI mods, they'll say something.

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

Just so it's not only Tuomas' unregistered dick on the line I will step up and say I liked that board a lot more when I could talk freely without my siblings googling it... I am disinclined to make a second username just to keep myself semi-anonymous.

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 19:02 (sixteen years ago)

btw, i dont have a problem with ILTMI being unregistered. i do have a problem with tuomas demanding some sort of mass notification email every time something has to be changed (temporarily or otherwise) for the good of the site. also, as one of the many sitewides that have spent a bunch of time cleaning this shit up over and over again, its irritating to have someone tell you that the important thing is that they get what they want without any concern for what it takes to have it work.

CHARMING LMAO (John Justen), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 19:14 (sixteen years ago)

well I don't really mean/intend to get involved in moderator politics but I think starting this thread was a valid question, I would have been next to ask probably and I have no modship of the board at all ;)

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 19:16 (sixteen years ago)

i cant speak for JJ but im guessing its not that the thread was started but that its gone on for a week.

a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 19:20 (sixteen years ago)

it's a funny parallel actually, I was just in a meeting where someone was asking a few questions that kept getting brushed aside and not answered in favour of talking about other things, and then a co-worker got upset because the other co-worker was still asking the questions. Heh. I getcha though Sunny.

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

RH summed it up pretty well last monday, no?

a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 19:27 (sixteen years ago)

Tuomas, I am sorry that some terrible mod got sick of cleaning up tons of spamflooding and took away your inalienable right to post anonymously about what you choose to throw your dick into.

Fair enough, but I was merely wondering, when did this supposed spamflooding happen? Because as one of the mods I've obviously been checking the board regularly, and I never noticed much spam. There was some spam during the first few days, but it didn't feel like "flooding", and after that I didn't notice much spam at all, even though unreg posting was still allowed. So it seemed weird to me that the board was made registered-only to solve a problem that, to me, didn't seem to be a problem at all. And if spamflooding is such a big problem, why is IRE still open to unreg posters?

btw, i dont have a problem with ILTMI being unregistered. i do have a problem with tuomas demanding some sort of mass notification email every time something has to be changed (temporarily or otherwise) for the good of the site.

Is it really that hard to start a thread called "ILTMI has gone registered-only for reason X"? I think most people (including me) would've be perfectly fine with that, or at least it would seem preferable to doing these things without telling anyone nor explaining the reason.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 19:43 (sixteen years ago)

xp sunny I don't know who's a mod of where, his sentence made me think this was a "this probably happened, I wasn't involved" rather than a "this happened, I know for sure" and left it kind of dangling w/r/t Tumoas' follow up question

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, that was the impression I got too. This is why it would've been much easier for whoever made the board registered-only to just start a thread on ILTMI explaining it, instead of a thread like this with various vague answers from different mods.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

i think RH is a sitewide mod now. I dont know when that happened.

a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

why is IRE still open to unreg posters?

it's not

jergins, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

I think what some people are missing here is that ILTMI and IRE have kind of frequently been getting the unreg post option turned on and off since the new board software was put into service, and it's still seen as an experiment for those boards, not a big policy decision. it goes like this: crapflood, one mod starts deleting shit, another mod ends up helping delete shit, one of them goes in and turns off unreg for the time being, they finish cleaning shit up and leave unreg turned off and go to bed, then a little while later one of them or another mod comes along and turns it back on, wait a few days, lather, rinse & repeat.

so that's why you wouldn't be seeing a thread about it every time it happens.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

otm

i've been turning IRE unreg on and off for a half hour at a time, often with fine, no-chaki-bullshit results. but that takes a lot of being bored at work, to monitor that closely.

tuomas, ask dr. freud got hit with a 50+ thread crapflood the other day and got turned back to registered. lots of stuff happens that we don't announce.

jergins, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 20:37 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, thanks for the answers Tom and Jergins, this clears things up.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

i think RH is a sitewide mod now. I dont know when that happened.

I just woke up one day and had all these strange new abilities. Walking up walls, proportional strength of a spider, ability to ban people. It's kinda awesome.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 21:15 (sixteen years ago)

i think it'd be ok for there to be a board where no one could be banned. have a couple of mods to delete posts and you'd get no more than heave and a troll or two and some spam. it'd be manageable.
