we cant invite ppl and threads seem to be shifting from 77 to ile -- not a big fan of this idea, some things (not at all meta) discussed on 77 that id prefer not to be googleable and i sort of assumed they would remain ungoogleable -- cant think of an ex. off the top but im sure there's something in there

also why cant we invite da croupier?

If you fear that the board would loose it's special flavour, well, I think 1P3 and the Noise Board prove public boards can have that too.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:08 (sixteen years ago)

it's not so much about being googled as it is that people have posted personal things on there. not meta, but about themselves.

jergins, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:09 (sixteen years ago)

i've basically seen your taint, so i don't expect you to understand, but the board started with an expectation of privacy. some people think that's important. what's with the big desire to make all that public?

jergins, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:10 (sixteen years ago)

when 77 looses it's special flavour, we will all breath deeply of it :)

country matters, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:11 (sixteen years ago)

But people never knew all the members 77 of anyway, and they always knew anyone might be invited there in the future. Do you really think folks have posted some super personal stuff there, thinking that some other ILXor might never see it?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:15 (sixteen years ago)

i do, yeah. but it isn't so much about 'some other ilxor' as it is 'any person in the world 6 billion of us'

jergins, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:17 (sixteen years ago)

(xx-post)

The big desire is, like I said, that there are some great threads on 77, and I don't think it's fair that everyone isn't given a chance to participate in them. I would assume there are lots of ILXors who don't have enough "inside knowledge" to 1) know that the board exists, and 2) know how to get an invitation.

Also, if anyone can and will get an invitation if he asks (as has been the case from the beginning), and if old threads are searchable once your a member of the board, I don't really see this as an issue of some implicit agreement of privacy.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:19 (sixteen years ago)

i do, yeah. but it isn't so much about 'some other ilxor' as it is 'any person in the world 6 billion of us'

So it isn't possible to make threads ungooglable? If this is the case, then I agree that the board should be kept invitation-only.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:22 (sixteen years ago)

The easiest way by far to de-google pages is to make them protected. Otherwise, it gets tricky, and you really can't trust Google to play nice.

TEENAGE DIALECTICS (libcrypt), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:31 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, but could the invitation process at least be made more democratic, so that everyone knows how to get an invite if they want to get in? Because now they'll only know how to get it if they happen to check this particular thread, and I don't think all ILXors even read I Must Protest.

tuomas, don't you get that 77 wouldn't be the unique thing it is if it hadn't started out invite only? people wouldn't have posted half the shit they have it had been public. you understand that the subboards that are/were best were forged under unique circumstances, right? and to take that away under some bullshit 'democracy/transparency' guise is funhating. nothing noble, ok.

jergins, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:52 (sixteen years ago)

tuomas, don't you get that 77 wouldn't be the unique thing it is if it hadn't started out invite only?

Noise Board and 1P3 have always been public, and yet they've evolved into unique things too. I think sub-boards can (and have) evolve into places with a certain quality and a certain set of regular posters even without keeping people away by artificial means.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:56 (sixteen years ago)

'artificial' is bullshit. everyone gets somewhere somehow.

jergins, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:57 (sixteen years ago)

But now those artificial means are keeping away new or old-but-lacking-of-insider-knowledge posters who might otherwise contribute to the special flavour of 77.

I'm not saying it was a bad thing, I'm just saying that I see no reason why the board should still be secret.

for one, the fact that it's google proof is much more important to the identity of 77 than the fact that it's secret from other ilx posters. if 77 became public and googleable it would no longer be the true 77 and imo that would be a sad thing.

and just like you see no reason for it to be secret, i see no reason for it to be public other than the fact that some number of mythical "ilxors" can't see the board - but since you haven't named anyone (and if you did they could just be invited) i don't see the point of opening up 77 based on some hypothetical situations
