there's a thing that lets mods adjust suggest ban counts, because when it was being written there was a worry about crusades/sock puppetry etc. It only works downwards.

here's the deal. way back in the earliest days of suggest bans as an idea, the biggest concern people expressed was that it would become a "lol pile on the unpopular poster" thing. So when i see dudes rallying for suggest ban votes, of course i'm going to assume that the totals are flawed by a bunch of joiner fucks deciding to bandwagon. there is an easy answer to this, which is to let the process work out naturally and not game the system.

o how about i just say that from here on out, anyone who gets SB'd stays banned. if a bunch of people think that being momentarily annoyed by a poster is worth kicking them off ILX permanently, well then theres nothing i can do about it.

Can you reset the counts then? It was all fun and games when the "blind eye" was turned on.

Now Ned Raggett is probably closer to oblivion than country matters just because LJ got a bonus 52 sb's that didn't count toward anything.

(I use Ned only as a generic example.)

ok so now people are asking for SB counts to be reset on a thread that started with a complaint about mods tampering with SB counts.

the easy solution here is for people just to not be dicks, both in the sense of posting dumb aggro shit that will earn you SB votes, and SBing people when you dont really want them banned.

typical self-serving evasion of reality from LJ. it is not some breathless post about music somewhere that earns suggest bans, it's stuff like, oh, talking ignorant shit on a super-high-traffic election thread, or breaking 77 rules, or posting ppl's real names, etc. it's a form not content problem.

no. before this illicits some sort of outrage, plz ask yourself if it would make any sense on any internet board anywhere ever for it to be possible to use this system to ban a sitewide moderator, especially given the completely lax control we enforce on sockpuppeting.

goole for serious you are taking three pathetically minor examples there, one of which i was punished for anyway, and the other two of which only landed me in shit because people were fucking unreasonable about it

i know i'm a bit overenthusiastic sometimes and i appreciate when people tell me to calm down or STFU, i heed them when they're upfront (and with this login, how many times have I persisted with an issue after being told to dial it back? how many issues have i created?). this is how messageboarders should learn to improve. suggest banning is utterly callous.

i mean is posting your real first name when shit gets slightly heated really indicative of how i deserve to be banned

yeah i know jj but i don't see what i've done to merit a sitewide permaban, i can easily avoid people if they don't like my presence, they should just be more upfront about which threads i should leave alone

single-issue white nonhipster (country matters), Friday, 16 January 2009 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

and Jho, if you really feel strongly about the way i dealt with this and think that it is worth examining my suitability to be a mod, start a new thread about it and leave the innuendo out of this one. xpost

non-ironic safety helmet wearer (John Justen), Friday, 16 January 2009 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

I sort of agree with LJ here. I didn't suggest ban him earlier even when he posted a very o_O post about me/RS because lol jokes but I did ask that the thread be deleted and it was. I have never suggest banned anyone and probably will never. Unless someone is SERIOUSLY offensive or threatening then I just don't get it tbh.

i think the message in this thread is that people are not satisfied with the current SB system for a variety of completely valid reasons.

and that sounds really simple and everything but yeah, it's not a particularly good system.

THE HIPSTER DILEMMA (call all destroyer), Friday, 16 January 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

the problems were "pathetically minor" in your charcterization, and it's other people who were "fucking unreasonable" -- no responsibility rests with you it seems. and if it does, the people who read you should not be "callous" and take the time and effort to be be "upfront." what a lot of work that is, to take care of you.

did you not just today post some over-the-line non-joek about a couple of ilx's married posters?

ha xps

anyway lj the point is not that this is solid evidence why you should be banned, these are examples of why you attract enough negative attention to get sb's from enough diverse posters. maybe it is minor and petty but look around, it doesn't happen to anyone else

goole, Friday, 16 January 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

fact of the matter is lj got sb'd once and is back and will eventually get sb'd again. so yeah, good system.

THE HIPSTER DILEMMA (call all destroyer), Friday, 16 January 2009 23:03 (sixteen years ago)

yeah but the thing is that 5 other people probably DID SB me for that, even tho' it didn't affect them in any way and besides they were confusing me n RS's comedy risque love-hate thing for genuine crepeyness xps to ENBB

goole if they care enough to SB they should care enough to be upfront, an SB shouldn't be taken lightly

basically the opposite of this:

2.
