Hey, I have some questions

Who was this moderator? Should moderators be so cavalier about posting an email address which appears to be linked to a real life identity? Is there any expectation of privacy for people who register with this site? Is there a list of moderators anywhere? Is this OK in the view of the people who run the site?

Thanks.

email addresses are automatically obscured in posts

unless your email actually contains all those ✧ characters then i am confused by the point of your query

if you want the name part of the address googleproofed i can help you there

Cooking From A Stovetop (electricsound), Monday, 19 January 2009 00:59 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think any of my queries are confusing. I suppose you're saying there is no expectation of privacy, and x number of unnamed moderators can do what they like with the addresses they have access to. If that's the case, it should really say so somewhere, don't you think?

Google-proofing is an odd suggestion. If I had chosen to post under a pseudonym, and then the email address I gave when registering was posted, linking me to a real life identity, google-proofing would not then solve that. That email does appear to be linked to a real life identity. And anyone cool with posting it in a cavalier way is probably cool with doing a lot of other things with it also. I found that surprising, so I'm asking about it.

What real life identity is it linked with?

Carne Meshuggah (libcrypt), Monday, 19 January 2009 01:33 (sixteen years ago)

Is it the dude who has the email address,

Heh fucked up my own joke there with my own code!

Carne Meshuggah (libcrypt), Monday, 19 January 2009 01:35 (sixteen years ago)

Given that the e-mail address was in this case, and is always, obscured automatically, I'm also not sure where it is you feel your privacy has been violated: the email address whose exposure concerns you is essentially illegible, and will be in any similar case.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 19 January 2009 01:39 (sixteen years ago)

The point being that there's nothing here to complain about. The email address does not identify you uniquely. That's what the email obscurer I wrote ensures! And if it identifies you to anyone you know who reads ILX, then, well, good. They should know you are foolish enough to think that you can get a waffles invite on a board entirely unconnected to waffles.fm. (2xp)

lol @ people who think ilx is the united nations

^Creepy. You could at least ask her age first.

ilxor coder, i didn't try to get an invite. lol. I posted to the thread because it was pretty shabby, specifically drew out the gullible and desperate, and had undercurrents of creepiness like the above. So emails given when registering are fair game, even if they appear to contain a real name? I'm trying to find out if there is a position on this or not. Nobody seems to think it's a problem so far, so okay. Again, surprising. Must be just me.

subroc back to haunt, Monday, 19 January 2009 01:55 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, it's just you. How difficult is it to creat a Hotmail account with a bogus, inscrutable username?

particularly when begging for bogus invites

electricsound, i was posting on ILM and came across the thread in new answers. I never asked for an invite, just commented on the thread.

HI DERE, as i suggested upthread, it should be made clear that random irresponsible sleazy schmoes will have access to one's email address when one registers. Personally, I thought that this site was affiliated with Freaky Trigger and hence would be more or less on the level.

subroc back to haunt, Monday, 19 January 2009 02:09 (sixteen years ago)

yes the moderators have access to the login email addresses of all users. this should come as no surprise. as discussed (and apparently ignored) upthread, email addresses are obscured in posts so can't be used by googlers and spammers. in the post you quoted, your name is partially (entirely?) displayed in what remains of the email address. i googleproofed it so nobody can track you back here. nobody here actually cares who you actually are in the real world, if that's your concern. unless you're one of the four guys going by your name on wikipedia.

Cooking From A Stovetop (electricsound), Monday, 19 January 2009 02:16 (sixteen years ago)

General rule of thumb:

If the site does not explicitly say "moderators/admins will not have access to your email address", the moderators/admins have access to your email address.

No, this was the point of my two posts to the thread, which was before whenever it was you think you showed me up.

At which point someone got ticked off at an unconnected newcomer being disapproving and posted what looks like a real name in the thread.

I was enjoying posting to ILM before all these unpleasant nerd activities.

subroc back to haunt, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 19:48 (sixteen years ago)

You can continue enjoying ILM as that type of thing is not tolerated there.

I apologize to you for being on the wrong end of a slightly rougher encounter on another sub-board, but not all of the boards have the same moderators, nor do they all play under the same rules. Not all of them have FAQs (some of them intentionally) so my best advice to you is "lurk before you post".

(As a side note to sub-board moderators, yes this is actually funny to me but let's think things through a little bit in future actions, okay?)
