now now now

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 27 February 2009 03:37 (sixteen years ago)

seriously, at this point is there anyone who thinks that SBs should not wear off after a reasonable amount of time?

He grew in Pussyville. Population: him. (call all destroyer), Friday, 27 February 2009 03:44 (sixteen years ago)

^ cosign

yeah it was explained to all and sundry that it would be a permaban, but that's hardly tuomas's fault.

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Friday, 27 February 2009 03:45 (sixteen years ago)

I know there are challenges with making updates to the codebase. what I'm suggesting is that this "feature" isn't meeting our needs and should be disabled until somebody can get it working in a more reasonable manner.

all it would take to disable it would be to rename or move the confirmbanrequest.jsp. the suggest ban link would throw a 404 but at least we could stop talking about this bullshit for a while.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 27 February 2009 03:53 (sixteen years ago)

I think the SB system is fine, but mods should review each person who hits 51 on a case-by-case basis. Whoever gets SBed out obv needs some time off from ILX at least and has demonstrated that simply by virtue of the 51. But after some time, mods should decide if that person can return or not.

This has already more or less happened with deeznuts remaining banned but the mods turning a blind eye to lj's return. I agree with both of those decisions. I'm sure Tuomas, who I never SBed, can come back eventually, hopefully having learned a couple lessons, and I even feel the same way about Gabbneb, who I did SB. But I think the mods should use their discretion in these cases.

I wish all the folks getting misty eyed about tuomas would show up here and represent

I'd love to have him back, but let's not pretend little Tuomy got taken advantage of by those mean ol SB system. He knew how this worked same as anybody, and he knew the risks of endlessly reiterating his arguments in a place where annoyance can lead to a SB click.

who wants to be on a board where irritating but ultimately benign posters are going to get permanently banned? that is just some unamerican thought police shit and I can't believe I even have to explain this. fuck it, sb me and get it over with.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:15 (sixteen years ago)

Is the implication here that tuomas is too tuomas to figure out how to get another gmail acct to create another login?

the new tuomas (libcrypt), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:17 (sixteen years ago)

i'd imagine that tuomas won't want to. i hope not.

the only people who need to be banned from ILX ever are actual trolls, not long-time users who don't cause any serious problems.

I think that the deeznuts ban was just, but the tuomas and gabbneb bans not. LJ, he could weather 100 permabans and be grinning from ear-to-ear.

the new tuomas (libcrypt), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:22 (sixteen years ago)

OTM, totally.

one art, please (Trayce), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:24 (sixteen years ago)

Also correct me if I'm wrong but I dont think Tuomas has ever been yellow carded before let alone temp banned. Surely someone going from "long term poster with consistent history and no bans" to "suddenly permanently banned" is cause for reflection at the least.

one art, please (Trayce), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:25 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe a 3 strikes policy would work better?

(2 temps/warning, then perm? 50-75-100? I dunno)

☻ (The Reverend), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:27 (sixteen years ago)

Largely staying out of this but I'm 100 % with Edward III. Was never in favour of this gladiatorial bullshit to begin with but having seen it not only claim Tuomas but also lead to even more popularity-contest clusterfuckery than normal (q.v. x is higher than y talk in the mong thread) I along with nearly everyone else on ilx have tired of the whole charade and want it shitcanned with all speed.

ice cr?m, Friday, 27 February 2009 04:31 (sixteen years ago)

like someone said upthread, i don't think tuomas is a victim here - he has been tempting everyone who would even consider using an sb for months and he even joked about it in the thread today. i think everyone is in agreement that the first sb shouldn't be perma, but tuomas was baiting everyone and he fucked himself.

the powerful claw (J0rdan S.), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:31 (sixteen years ago)

ahahahahaha shaqgate

punk is deady brewster (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:32 (sixteen years ago)

xxxp There's no way you can really permanently ban a person from ILX. You can ban an account, but that doesn't prevent someone from registering a new one. You can ban an ip, but the nature of the internet means it wears off after about a month or so. Hence, you had LJ's return a few weeks after his SB, and you occasionally have mod-banned folks like Chaki return with a new account, only to get banned again.

Yes and no. If you post from work, then there's a mighty good chance that an IP ban is as permanent as they get. If you only post from home, then an IP ban is likely as transient as yanking the power on yr DSL modem.

the new tuomas (libcrypt), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:38 (sixteen years ago)

You can ban an ip, but the nature of the internet means it wears off after about a month or so.

Thats not always true - some ppl like myself come from 2 diff IPs anyway (work and home) and work ones are more often than not static and wont ever change.

one art, please (Trayce), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:39 (sixteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure that suggest bans do not entail IP bans, in any case.

the new tuomas (libcrypt), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:39 (sixteen years ago)

Note that the determined can play anonymous-proxy-jumping long enough to evade any IP ban.

the new tuomas (libcrypt), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:40 (sixteen years ago)

Indeed.

i think ilx should be shut down for 24 hours on feb 26 2010

the powerful claw (J0rdan S.), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:42 (sixteen years ago)

Considering tuomas's take on such matters, it's ironic that the most democratic feature of ILX is precisely what got him banned.

the new tuomas (libcrypt), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:43 (sixteen years ago)

Aight, that was just the way I understood it. Thanks for the clarification.

The Reverend, Friday, 27 February 2009 04:44 (sixteen years ago)

I know people were making a lot of suggestions about adding buttons already but I seriously think there should be a "kudos" button that only has the effect of removing one SB.

Dan I., Friday, 27 February 2009 04:45 (sixteen years ago)

plz don't SB me fr saying "kudos"

Dan I., Friday, 27 February 2009 04:46 (sixteen years ago)

i support the ideas of suggest ban in theory, but am fairly ambivalent about how it has worked in practice

it has pretty much worked exactly as designed as far as i can tell, whether this was the intention of people who called for it in the first place is another matter

it's a bit neither here nor there for me as none of the people with high SB totals are anyone i have any particular problem with, and people i absolutely can't stand have barely any

would probably support temp bans instead but don't care enough to fight for it

it would probably disappoint me if it was removed entirely as those who don't feel comfortable calling people out publically lose their voice again. not everyone wants to get into a 300 post discussion about their reasons for disliking another poster.

w/ sax (electricsound), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:46 (sixteen years ago)

i do think it should exist in some for def

the powerful claw (J0rdan S.), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:47 (sixteen years ago)

I can't find it now, but I had previously suggested that suggest bans be changed to work thus:

50 total votes = 3 day ban
75 total votes = 6 day ban
90 total votes = 15 day ban
95 total votes = 1 month ban
98 total votes = 6 month ban
100 total votes = permaban

the new tuomas (libcrypt), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:48 (sixteen years ago)

lol @ 6 month ban

the powerful claw (J0rdan S.), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:49 (sixteen years ago)

I also like the idea of expiring sugban votes after a period of time.

love ppl assuming those who get sb'd are going to figure out exactly how the IP ban works and whip up some anonymous proxy routing to get around it when we're talking about tuomas, whose posts make me think "how did this guy even get onto the internet?"

sb = democracy is just about the most ludicrous thing I've read today. I'm gonna start voting people off my block who annoy me.

Considering that this message board was started by someone from Britain and the second and third incarnations of the source code were written by people from Britain, complaining that it is unamerican is really fucking stupid.

Suggest ban is not getting turned off. You don't have to use it. You don't have to post here. Deal with it.
