no. from what i understand, dom is permabanned because of a complete inability to accept that constant abuse of other posters on the site is unacceptable and his lack of a willingness to adjust his behavior into something that isnt completely entitled and self-righteous. this has been illustrated by repeated offenses, and has been met with many complaints. on top of this, he has a tendency to respond to any questioning of his right to do anything he wants without consequence with more personal abuse, often directed towards mods and their supposed inability or inadequacy to do their jobs, which has generally been shrugged off far more on this site than it would be on any other site that has unpaid, volunteer modding. also, i just went through the suggestban system and discovered that due to gaming it with multiple logins and getting his count reset when his screenname needed to be removed in order to temp ban him because of a (now fixed) glitch in the system, he was significantly over 51 and therefore suggbanned already.

i was not the one who banned him, but having taken the time to take a look at a few things, im pretty sure he is going to stay banned.

also, if you want these sorts of issues taken seriously and dealt with honestly and directly in the future, i would suggest being direct and not making a sly, wacky nudge-nudge thread title, because i was tempted not to bother with this.

It was revenge for Billy Batts, and a lot of other things. And there was nothing that we could do about it. Batts was a made man, and Tommy wasn't. And we had to sit still and take it. It was among the Italians. It was real greaseball shit. They even shot Tommy in the face so his mother couldn't give him an open coffin at the funeral.

I think this smacks of a bullying mentality, and I also don't see what stops people from registering a load of sockpuppet accounts just to gang up and get rid of a poster they don't like. Do the 51 people who took the trouble to stalk Dom by suggest banning him ACROSS HIS DIFFERENT ACCOUNTS really outweight the many times that number that enjoyed his posts? I don't want to be a stick in the mud, but if this is the way ILX is going then I for one continues for 1500 words

The reason I've been saying this is because the system does actually work. I'm sorry if it's taking out people you like; I agree that the Tuomas situation is debatable even though I have made up my mind on it but you can't honestly tell me that the people who've been hit by suggest bans weren't doing things that would otherwise result in a ban.

Do individual SBs fall off the table over time? That is, if someone's a jackass early in their posting history, and racks up 45 SB, then calms down and becomes a constructive poster, do 6 more SB -- even if they're done as jokes or spaced out over a year's time -- result in a permanent ban?

(Trust me, I'm not trying to be a "Board Lawyer" or whatever. Just curious.)

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 5 March 2009 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

This isn't like the Godfather, it's like the gasoline fight scene in Zoolander.

Roque Santa Gold (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 March 2009 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

They stick around. We don't have any type of mechanism in place for them to automatically fade away and we don't have a process in place where a certain number are deducted after a period of time. Some type of fade-out period would be a good addition to this IMO but it isn't there yet, which is one reason why I think moderator review is an essential component of this.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Thursday, 5 March 2009 19:34 (sixteen years ago)

I'm finding this really difficult to view as anything other than hilarious right now because I have yet to see any justification as to why the people who got themselves banned today aren't complete idiots who walked right into it.

The thing that consistently amazes me on these threads is the assumption that a few mods and the people who post on meta threads somehow represent the full spectrum of ILX opinion, whereas there are hundreds of posters who have opinions about the boards but never post on these threads because they are ridiculous clusterfucks. Some of those people almost certainly helped push, say, Ethan over the edge.

I know that for a handful of people this means daddy won't be coming home for Christmas, but I can only really imagine one of today's banned posters never being allowed to post again.

Roque Santa Gold (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 March 2009 19:36 (sixteen years ago)

Dan, serious question, which I only ask in this thread because that's where you posted this: is anyone really sticking to the conviction or illusion that any bans will be truly permanent unless actively overturned by mods? And is there really that much varation in the 'severity of the crime' from one SB'd poster to the next that a standard length of time for the ban can't be instituted? Because I think most people are more unnerved by the idea that each ban is some undefined length of time than that anyone believes it'll be permanent. I mean, a lot of us have been here 5+ years including many of the banned, and it seems crazy to think that they shouldn't be able to come back in a month or a year or two and given the chance to irritate us well into old age. I mean short of someone guilty of malicious hacking or posting childp0rn or something that could literally endanger the board, I don't see the harm.

I don't want to speak for all mods but I reckon the majority of the people who get SB'ed will be allowed back in. Those who aren't will most likely be the exception rather than the rule.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Thursday, 5 March 2009 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

TBH the only SB'ed poster I would be inclined to never let back in is Deeznuts. It has nothing to do with the level of outcry.

If a poster is THAT obnoxious and destructive an influence the chances are they will be Permabanned by a site mod way before they have the opportunity to get to 51 suggest bans.

Roque Santa Gold (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 March 2009 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

Matt OTM. There's no standard period of time because no one proposed it before the suggest ban mechanism was turned on and that is probably one of two major failures in process here (the other being the non-expiring suggest ban count). I would stress, however, that the mods are not irrational or unreasonable, particularly when dealt with rationally and reasonably.

Some of it is going to be based on outcry, although not necessarily in the direction you mean (today's outcry made me want to actively campaign for Ethan to stay banned forever even though I think that's not the correct way to deal with things when looking at the situation rationally). Some of it is going to be based on the behavior of the poster before the ban happened; Tuomas was being irritating but ultimately harmless, whereas Ethan was actively spamming threads with stupid shit. Gabbneb is a more difficult case because there are instances where he was genuinely hilarious and others where he was genuinely creepy/off-putting.

Ultimately I wish I could turn on the "Get Along" feature and not have to deal with this.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Thursday, 5 March 2009 19:58 (sixteen years ago)
