Hello World!

what do you have in mind btw

^^^ We should definitely do this. Something like, pick a theme and then write programs that fit the theme?

display-name aesthete (snoball), Thursday, 17 June 2010 11:44 (fifteen years ago)

I was thinking something like (one I just mailed to my nerd friends):

'in a program (language of your choice) output the first 500 characters of romeo and juliet. shortest program wins"

Gravel Puzzleworth, Thursday, 17 June 2010 12:18 (fifteen years ago)

(that one's kind of unfair bcz I've been thinking about it all morning, but, y'know, that sort of thing)

Gravel Puzzleworth, Thursday, 17 June 2010 12:20 (fifteen years ago)

There is a stand-alone constraint here, is there? What dependencies are allowed (apart from the basics of the operating system obv)? Can I invoke any Windows dll, for instance? ;)

anatol_merklich, Thursday, 17 June 2010 12:22 (fifteen years ago)

maybe say it has to work on ideone.com, as a sort of abritrary rule re:standaloneness/ ultra high-level languages?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Thursday, 17 June 2010 12:55 (fifteen years ago)

Wow I didn't even know about that one, ty! Also, yes seems fair I suppose.

anatol_merklich, Thursday, 17 June 2010 13:26 (fifteen years ago)

ditto, ditto

Where's Ste when we need him...

Gravel Puzzleworth, Thursday, 17 June 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

"Can I access the network from my program?
No, access to the network is blocked."

Ha! There goes my strategy.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 17 June 2010 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

As in a strategy for a program to output the first 500 character of Romeo & Juliet? Use HTML (not really a language I know)...

I don't think we're actually doing the R&J one - that was just an example!

When should we start this?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Friday, 18 June 2010 13:01 (fifteen years ago)

this avo would have been great, got bugger all else to do.

eh i'm free anytime.

I will be watching but not playing. I like tricksy programming but it's not how my mind works, at all.

(I wrote a quine once! It tooks hours of mental bleeding. I thought it was my homework assignment. Turns out my homework assignment was to write the Pascal equivalent of open (my $fh,'<','ownsourcecode.pl'); print while <$fh> and the teacher obviously thought my obfuscated trickery was a load of retarded nonsense typing.

So yeah, not getting burnt like that again, my first thought for the R+J was that a one-liner cd probably scrape it off gutenberg.org, but not on ideone it seems. But ideone is pretty neat, thanks!)

atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 18 June 2010 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

I'll try and think of a good one and put something up tonight, say one week from when it starts as the deadline?
