What do you guys think of this?
― Mark C, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 14:33 (sixteen years ago) link
xp tp gbx: Holy........but you could never ride it. Or wrench on it. Or breathe on it.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 14:35 (sixteen years ago) link
Mark, I like, very classic looking but will be light as anything. I would probably want to replace the downtube shifters though, but this is because I can't walk and chew gum at the same time and certainly can't use down tubes without looking at them.
― Ed, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 15:34 (sixteen years ago) link
mark i dont see value there. v. good frame, bad looking alloy fork, serious compatibility/replacement of parts issues, tubulars, downtubes shifters.
if you wanna rock this like 1989 (buy some oakley iridium blades and a neon headband) and dont care about compatibility or parts replacement issues (read: low mileage, high end recreational riding) you could do a lowball offer. but for what you want i dont see it. also it looks too big for 6'.

Cheers Ed and Hunter - I agree, there are too many things about it that aren't right, and with my limited knowledge and inclination to have to work on a bike, it's definitely not a good buy. But interesting.
The shifters - I know what you mean. I was SO stoked when I discovered, like, shifters from the last 20 years, and I don't think I can give them up now.

Just been looking through the Mosquito website. Steel bikes are soooo pretty, but there was one option which was £1350 in steel and £2450 in Titanium. I'm not sure I could justify such a premium under any circumstances.

OR DO I WAIT AND BID ON THAT VOODOO WAZOO THAT'S UP RIGHT NOW
i have decided to slowly build a CX bike
― gbx, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 19:05 (sixteen years ago) link
gbx, i own one of those (featured in various ilx photos). if youre racing, no (heavy). if yr fenders/rack, no (no eyelets). no bottles. clearance for 32s rear, small 30 front. thats 1996-1998 vintage. about 5 lbs frame 1.8 fork i think? $360 new in 1997.
― Hunt3r, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 19:07 (sixteen years ago) link
i do however love the way it rides, very roady.
― Hunt3r, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 19:10 (sixteen years ago) link
that settles that, then.
i want something that has the potential to be raceable.
― gbx, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 19:10 (sixteen years ago) link
on the chance i don't get into medical school (which seems to be the case), i think i'm gonna move to portland next year, and having a "real" CX bike would suddenly be even more urgent and key
....should we have a thread for ebay deals???

derailin', sorry
(i think 54cm might actually be too big for me? Hunt3r how does CX sizing differ from road? i am short)
― gbx, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 19:16 (sixteen years ago) link
shit i have to go back to work
conventional wisdom says go 1 or 2 cm smaller, but i like them the exact same size as my road frame if possible and use a shorter higher stem. that way the steering axis "feels" mostly the same to me. when i raced a smaller frame (the gitane) i felt like too much weight on front wheel or something.
― Hunt3r, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 19:22 (sixteen years ago) link
cx trivia. in 1995 or so, there were almost no cx options, and no US mass market ones, available in the US. so u got an ALAN or other euro frame. imagine, i mean avg riders dint even know what they were. I had canti posts brazed onto an rb1 in order to have one. so schwab cycles in denver brought in a bunch of those gitanes cause the local scene was starting to blow up.

― Jordan, Thursday, 21 February 2008 20:17 (sixteen years ago) link
i always thot that motivs were like sub huffy. its a tange cromo frame tho, and the parts hanging on it are mid to high end. if yr dead sure that the parts arent clapped out and frame and wheels are straight, it doesn't sound shitty.
― Hunt3r, Thursday, 21 February 2008 23:39 (sixteen years ago) link
make sure you get some slicks for it
― gbx, Thursday, 21 February 2008 23:45 (sixteen years ago) link
hunt3r what do you think a decent price would be for that voodoo?
on another note: apparently winner of that gitane was shady, and i was second place, so the seller is hounding me to buy it.
― gbx, Thursday, 21 February 2008 23:48 (sixteen years ago) link
See the ebay scam thread on ile before you buy!
― Mark C, Friday, 22 February 2008 00:22 (sixteen years ago) link
not sure but the fork on the wazoo is probly worth more than the gitane. and isnt a king headset is like $125 or more?
man, im out of the game so my price estimates might be crap but id think $575-$650 would be low side of retail a la carte
― Hunt3r, Friday, 22 February 2008 00:42 (sixteen years ago) link
just did some looking online.... have found new framesets for 500-550, with different (carbon) forks
i can get a cross-check for $400 from the LBS (lower than MSRP, apparently), so this wouldn't be worth it for more than $350, I don't think. i mean, it's definitely a nice frame, but the cross check seems more versatile (could be used as a SS, for instance)

Just geometrically speaking, those bikes should come factory with the butt cushion seats, the split ones. It goes, somehow.

I love the flying-W handlebars: classier than moustache ones, with all the implication of a leisurely stroll but with more style.

Are we mostly roadies/commuters here? I was going to post a picture of the new Foex FXR (the bike that I lust after), but Foes's page is done in flash, and I don't know how to link to a particular image from it.

Close- they just redesigned the top tube to integrate the seat tube gusset into the monocoque, and they gave it a little bit more travel. incidentally, i made a life decision a few years ago that, unbeknownst to me at the time, prevented me from getting hired as the assistant GM at foes. i still love the hell out of their bikes, though.
