ok so i went to thee bike show today, 'bespoke imports' stand had the biggest collection of lightweights i have seen, also a few passoni bikes like this one:
http://www.passoni.com/collezione/XXTi%20LE.jpg
with the same ridiculous cinelli ram bar+stem that looks like it might be painted in glow in the dark paint. they had an even crazier red one with wacky 8-spoke marchisios
http://www.passoni.com/img/foto/varie/ruota2.jpg
i didn't even bother asking prices
other fun stuff: new focus range (focuses? focii??) look pretty tite, nice bianchi crosser (new pistas are GROSS tho), some nice sabbath ti frames from the UK, a wilier cento1 in screaming acid orange that would be good if ur a total attention-seeker, a virginal white 'nago master. new super record looks a bit wack with red stickers all over. a few big brands MIA tho.

I have just brokered a bike sale between a friend and a filmmaker - a raw lacquered Brompton S3L - and I am now well jealous because it's one sexy bike, if folding bikes can be sexy.

do you have to fuck around much w/ getting the rear wheel off a hub-geared bike?

Am seriously tempted by the flat-barred Pompetamine Comp (I have been 'seriously tempted' by a different bike every day over the past week, but I think this might be 'the one'). Would rather have some serious tyres fitted (Marathon+ or something) though, which On-one don't seem to offer.

look v nice
― American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Friday, 10 September 2010 16:56 (fourteen years ago) link
Serious tyres yes, but also seriously heavy and rubbish on corners. I'd put up woith more punctures tbh and have a better ride.
(NB I may regret this in january)
― Mark C, Friday, 10 September 2010 17:07 (fourteen years ago) link
I had Marathons on my last bike and they weren't noticeably worse in corners, the weight might be more noticeable on a steel-framed hub-geared bike though. But sod all that rigmarole for fixing a puncture.
― useless chamber, Friday, 10 September 2010 17:49 (fourteen years ago) link
I've got marathon's on my pub bike. they're indestructible. heavy but no punctures in about 3 years

Bianchi just launched a new criterium focused frame set that looks at first glance pretty similar to my current frame but with bb30 and a beefier steerer/headtube. I'm definitely gonna test ride this when I get a chance:http://www.bianchiusa.com/bikes/born-for-performance/sempre/sempre-frameset/

ah the classic 'unified rear triangle' seen on £100 full sus mountain bikes everywhere. nicely spun as 'no power is wasted in compressing the suspension during the pedal stroke' - iow the suspension stops working when you put weight on the pedals.
― ledge, Friday, 1 October 2010 08:29 (fourteen years ago) link
...which is why this the design doesn't work on mountain bikes. This is a fast road bike that you can fit in a standard sized suitcase.
― Three Word Username, Friday, 1 October 2010 15:37 (fourteen years ago) link
but why would you want suspension on a fast roadbike? and if you do, just get a suspension seatpost - also with no power loss during pedal stroke!
― ledge, Friday, 1 October 2010 15:50 (fourteen years ago) link
In this case, to make it easier to fold, and to give the tiny little bike on tiny wheels a much smoother ride. Reports are it works.
― Three Word Username, Friday, 1 October 2010 16:01 (fourteen years ago) link
Also rear wheel traction.

nice. get it with the carbon tubulars too!!
dudes there were some sweeeeet rides down in geelong. i recommend all these baums in particular - the titanium one in the light blue (Di2, lightweights, some boutique german carbon cranks and brakes) was 6.2 kilos with pedals. range-topping madone in grey was a looker; scott CR1 in stealth matte carbon and grey was pretty tite; the NZ brand avanti had their 25th anniversay special (5.6kg!) ...yeah there were a lot of nice bikes!

parked my bike next to this guy at a restaurant last night. saw the guy exiting and came out to talk to him about it. he made it himself. so amazing. he's not even a bike maker, he's a chef (shasta, he cooks for blvd). said he wanted some really fancy british bike (that starts with H, forget the name) and instead of paying 3-4k, decided he'd make it himself. he went to RISD and had background w/tooling, so just read up and went for it.

Damn indeed.
I was riding with a guy I hadn't ridden with before, a Taiwanese American. His folks are friends with some who works at the factory where BMC and Easton, among others, get their stuff made. He was riding what he described as a tradefair bike, one they make to show off their capabilities to the likes of Easton and BMC, At first I thought it was carbon but it was in fact Scandium and had the neatest welds imaginable. Must try and get a picture because it looks fantastic.
