My brother had his bike stolen recently (house burglary), he did have a photo, but I got the impression from him that they were very nitpicky, and did do searches for that sort of thing. Of course if it's the only way you've got any chance of getting the money, then it might be worth a shot, idk.
He did do a bank statement from when he bought it, and a reference to the price at the time as well, don't know whether that helps.

unfortunately that particular bike was an insurance replacement from the last time it was stolen so I don't have any proof of purchase. (wasn't the same insurance company apparently, otherwise that would have saved me a lot of time).
I think I might just keep digging and/or appeal to the facebook community to see if any of my friends have a picture somewhere.

ah, balls. Yes, definitely doctored picture the way to go. What sort was it? (in ungoogleable terms obv).

Was a Sp3cialized H4rdr0ck Sport and about five years old although in decent nick. I'd pretty much given up on it and donated it to a friend (whose flat it was stolen from outside) anyway, so if I can get a more suitable replacement I'll be quite happy. bit of a hassle, but I suppose it has to be.

Replaced! With a Mongoose Maurice that I may never ever lock outside.

It's covered under home/renters, but depending on yr deductible it might not matter much.

caught a guy levering the pvc window into our apartment building this morning. six or seven bikes in there, all locked but seeing as most ppl are out duing the day (i just had a late start this AM) that wouldnt have been a huge problem for him. gonna ask management to cage the windows.

My bike was stolen in August. I chained it up under the stairs to my building (where it was hidden from the street) and used a decent lock but some son of a bitch found it and stole it. I didn't have it insured :(
I'm getting a new bike soon and I'm not sure whether to lock it to railings outside (using a decent D-lock of course), or keep it in the hallway to my building where there is nothing to chain it to but the front door locks and it wouldn't be visible from the street. Any thoughts on which would be a better place to keep it?

keep it in your apartment

yeah and if nothing else, lock the front wheel to the bike so people can't just roll it away

I do both of those things (lock frame + wheel around a pole, even a kind of big pole) with my ABUS SUPER DUPER SWIVEL LOCK

The police found my bike that got stolen, four months later. They saw some guy who looked a bit dodgy and who had a bike so they stopped him and asked where he got it. He said he bought it on Youtube :s
They checked the serial number and sure enough it was mine, so now I have two bikes. I'm going to sell the stolen one even though I only got it in April. It had been kept in good condition and now it has a padded seat cover and one of those seatpost bags, so that's a plus
The moral of this story is take a note of your bike's serial number just in case
