something ~off~ about bb30s on steel bikes. cool bike tho

yeah, niche-y, that's what i meant (Hunt3r), Thursday, 13 October 2011 23:23 (thirteen years ago) link

That mr pink is a really nice looking bike, yes. Fear it may be out of the price range though. Really want an ex demo kaffenback with ultegra that I've seen, but it's getting the cash together before it gets snaffled that's the issue. Pay rise yesterday has helped this a bit.

actually, the carbon fork could be a problem wrt bike racking, as i just throw the front wheel over the bar and hang it.

My own steel bike build is coming on nicely. Dude in Pittsburgh has some age appropriate Roval wheels hitch should set it of nicely. I thought I'd put mainly campy on it but ok school dura-ace is an order of magnitude cheaper.

p sure I made a crazy post about how rad an IG hub plus electro shifting would be but nooooo you jerks shot me down

who's crazy now?????

catbus otm (gbx), Saturday, 3 March 2012 17:09 (twelve years ago) link

I don't remember putting u down, but I really want an ig hub that's quick release. That wld be way more useful to me.

please god, no.

no discs on road bikes for one. Another - colnagos should be graceful and elegant - that head tube is neither. Paint job is not great either.

And one I'm probably very much on my own on - Dura ace cranks really are fugly.

problem chimp (Porkpie), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 20:49 (twelve years ago) link

haha i had a really sour response to this bike that i deleted w/o posting earlier cause positive is where i live.

ask me about my upcoming 77mm headtube standard tho- so precise.

u kin pon da per pet chuh wul mo shun (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 20:58 (twelve years ago) link

i for one welcome our new disc brake overlords

u kin pon da per pet chuh wul mo shun (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 20:59 (twelve years ago) link

gotta say since i've been riding what is my first bike with caliper brakes (weird), i've been impressed with how much stronger they feel than everything else? like, more powerful in a vague sense, discs are sort of on-and-off, you're either coming to a halt very rapidly or not. these feel smoother AND like there's plenty to spare if it really comes to it

catbus otm (gbx), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:41 (twelve years ago) link

think i posted bititan awesomeness somewhere in iltrmb once

u kin pon da per pet chuh wul mo shun (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, I have canti's on my kaffenback and they're my least favourite thing about it - I just can't adjust them properly. Putting some proper blocks on helped a lot, mind.

x-post

i have a hard time with the crap juicys on my mtb, i figured it was cause they were crap and i needed elixirs

fwiw my mtb dudes bag on juicys all the time (which is what i have)

catbus otm (gbx), Wednesday, 7 March 2012 21:59 (twelve years ago) link

i think we need new brakes, bad modulation on the front esp at v. low speeds is my problem

How about loosing some weight lol.

can we do +/- on road discs pls

+ consistent stopping in the wet
+ more consistent (and less effort needed if hydro) to stop in general
+ can now run carbon clinchers with impunity

- learn better braking technique and you won't 'run out' of brakes, lol. like has anyone else actually run out of brake? i haven't, and i'm no lightweight
- no more radial lacing; spoke counts go up
- increased complexity
- having a rotor on one side can't be good for aero balance surely? + the calipers haning off one side of the frame too
- frame, fork weight will go up in general due to reinforcement (don't really care about this, high-grade frames are crazy light as is)
- slower wheel changes if racing
- crash in a pack, get sliced up??
- i struggle to see how the small rotors that the weight weenie and poser crowds will push for will be able to deal with the heat build-up after a few hard stops, which kinda negates the whole 'more consistent' argument surely. that or make massive rotors.

arnott's shjapes (haitch), Thursday, 8 March 2012 00:29 (twelve years ago) link

maybe new dura-ace will be like XTR, but rather than 'race' and 'trail' we'll see 'pro' and 'MANIL' variants

arnott's shjapes (haitch), Thursday, 8 March 2012 00:30 (twelve years ago) link

+ keep riding on a dinged rim a bit easier

arnott's shjapes (haitch), Thursday, 8 March 2012 00:48 (twelve years ago) link

+moves weight to hub
+no more radial spokes (looks better)
+glue doesn't melt on tubulars
+hydraulic means more convoluted cable routings possible (does't have to be disc really)

~yeah its asymmetric but so is everything else these days

-I've never ridden with anyone with discs who didn't have noisy brakes
-is a bent rotor better than an bent rim? I can flip the callipers open on a bent rim and get home
-As Pash says there is annoying number of different pad types
-doesn't look proper

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 8 March 2012 02:14 (twelve years ago) link

for racing, how consistent are wheel swaps? i always hated digging in neutral wi/wo truck to make sure i was getting the right number/spacing of cogs. so now you would also have to make sure you get the right rotor standard?

FYI Ed - in Evans on Mortimer Street there is a yellow-with-black-details BMC roadie on special. Handily I didn't see the make but it's down to £1299.

it's probably the orange details but I saw this ridden by a continental team on the 4 days of Dunkirk and quite like it:

Peter Sagan is not making not buying a Supersix evo any easier. I'm fairly satisfied its the prettiest bike you can buy right now.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 23:34 (twelve years ago) link

a guy i ride with has the liquigas one - it is a looker for sure. weirdly, he's had it like three months and he's talking about a dogma 2 now - clearly more disposable income than i have to play with. (i'm trying to steer him towards a cx bike, heh.)

bull pillman (haitch), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 02:32 (twelve years ago) link

My mate has just bought a Dogma 2 (he had a Prince before) and he is head over heels for it. His PBs have shot up and he's deeply in love.

I can't help thinking those guide prices are ridiculously low, the vintage campagnolo alone on some of them is worth more than that.

feel like the other evos have CANNONDALE on them a bit much so this works for me. could do with a touch more colour tho, maybe!

This is pretty and at £3200 for titanium, Di2 and Carbon wheels seems like somewhat of a bargain.

best bro just got a pinarello dogma w/ chorus. i've yet to see it in person, but totally lustworthy afaict.

i have resolved (in my head) to beat him to snowbird by one minute for $1000 extra his bike is worth. /shittalking /classenvy

for the sake of future hipstorians (Hunt3r), Monday, 30 July 2012 15:23 (twelve years ago) link

Spanish guy on the coffee shop ride last week had a movistar replica Dogma last week. I beat him up all the hills including the one I punctured on.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 30 July 2012 15:28 (twelve years ago) link

Talkin of Lustworthery bikes Genesis bikes is sponsoring a UK based continental team next yera and they are going to be riding a Reynolds 953 steel frame that promises to flirt with the UCI weight limit and probably be very lustworthy. I can't wait for that to come out.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 30 July 2012 15:30 (twelve years ago) link

yes very keen to see that. like the cinelli xcr from waaaaaaay upthread perhaps. wonder what unique touches it'll have; 44mm headtube like their steel MTB frames maybe?

hunt3r you should drop him and then make lots of 'chinarello' remarks.

schnitzel ebb (haitch), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 05:11 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i sorta picked up on something about that chinarello ish in forum lands, but i don't know what it's really about? was it some sorta knockoff bikes, or just pinarello moving production to asia?

for the sake of future hipstorians (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

knockoff frames - here's a good primer. lots of them seem like they're made from the mould for the old prince, some with 'dogma' stickers and some unbranded; newer ones look properly like the dogma.

notorious for these scary pix of one that snapped at the fork crown mid-ride... revealing fork legs filled with chi newspaper! i think there's lots out there now, though, and they can't all be failing. sorta curious how they ride tbh. tho i'd tend towards sticking with a well-known brand for warranty claims and the like.

Did we put the scary pics of the fake Specialized up here anywhere, head tube ripped the main tubes
