My mate has just bought a Dogma 2 (he had a Prince before) and he is head over heels for it. His PBs have shot up and he's deeply in love.

Get yourself one of Jimmy Saville's old bikes.

I can't help thinking those guide prices are ridiculously low, the vintage campagnolo alone on some of them is worth more than that.

feel like the other evos have CANNONDALE on them a bit much so this works for me. could do with a touch more colour tho, maybe!

This is pretty and at £3200 for titanium, Di2 and Carbon wheels seems like somewhat of a bargain.

best bro just got a pinarello dogma w/ chorus. i've yet to see it in person, but totally lustworthy afaict.

i have resolved (in my head) to beat him to snowbird by one minute for $1000 extra his bike is worth. /shittalking /classenvy

Spanish guy on the coffee shop ride last week had a movistar replica Dogma last week. I beat him up all the hills including the one I punctured on.

Talkin of Lustworthery bikes Genesis bikes is sponsoring a UK based continental team next yera and they are going to be riding a Reynolds 953 steel frame that promises to flirt with the UCI weight limit and probably be very lustworthy. I can't wait for that to come out.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 30 July 2012 15:30 (twelve years ago) link

yes very keen to see that. like the cinelli xcr from waaaaaaay upthread perhaps. wonder what unique touches it'll have; 44mm headtube like their steel MTB frames maybe?

hunt3r you should drop him and then make lots of 'chinarello' remarks.

schnitzel ebb (haitch), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 05:11 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i sorta picked up on something about that chinarello ish in forum lands, but i don't know what it's really about? was it some sorta knockoff bikes, or just pinarello moving production to asia?

for the sake of future hipstorians (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

knockoff frames - here's a good primer. lots of them seem like they're made from the mould for the old prince, some with 'dogma' stickers and some unbranded; newer ones look properly like the dogma.

notorious for these scary pix of one that snapped at the fork crown mid-ride... revealing fork legs filled with chi newspaper! i think there's lots out there now, though, and they can't all be failing. sorta curious how they ride tbh. tho i'd tend towards sticking with a well-known brand for warranty claims and the like.

some cool stuff at eurobike without being game-changing. lol @ 'road disc' not really getting off the ground for the third year in a row, though, despite the fervent hopes of magazine editors and dudes on the internet. I would rock a salsa warbird, mind.

cinelli laser viva is quite beautiful - hate to think of the cost.

also the giro empire, aka the taylor phinney shoe, very on-trend silver (!) and neon yellow (!) laces (!!).

i really want a drop seatpost

catbus otm (gbx), Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:55 (twelve years ago) link

the drop thing is covenient, but the pounding that many local trails have taken from hard dh style riding and high traffic has made them basically shit for non shuttle riders. just pushes the rest of us out into backcountry.

backed by regular small people (Hunt3r), Saturday, 1 September 2012 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

at least you have actual mountains

catbus otm (gbx), Saturday, 1 September 2012 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

i have a drop seatpost now, although it could use an upgrade (it's an earlier design that has some problems the newer designs have been correcting). it goes beyond just being convenient - in fact, i'd say that, aside from disc brakes, it's the best MTB upgrade i have ever made (and that includes suspension). it's the kind of thing you don't use until you have it - i used to adjust my seat once or twice during a ride, but with the height-adjust post, i probably move my seat 10-15 times, or more if there's a lot of rolling terrain.

how did we get here how? (ytth), Sunday, 2 September 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link

i've been dreaming of a bike that has a dropseat as the focal point -- basically a fully rigid 29er (or KRAMPUS) with a carbon fork. maybe SS and with flat pedals, for shits. a rigid bike isn't nearly as much of a pain on the downhill if you dont ever sit down and don't have a dumb old seat jacking you in the crotch, esp if its really easy to wheelie over stuff (carbon fork!). obv this does not obtain in places with actual mountains, but for trail riding in the midwest? fuck. yes.

can we do that bike nerd thing where we spec out bikes? ok? ok.

S.S. KRAMPUS (<--- like a ship, not like a nazi. i'll admit that "SS" in even the general vicinity of a german word gives me the willies)
singlespeed
drop seat (rock shox seems nice)
hydraulic brakes (i know nothing about brakes)
carbon fork (does that RDO niner clear huge tires??? that would be boss)
white ind cranks
canfield crampons
chris king everything
thomson everything
ergonz
pdw takeout rack why because beer and snacks

this would be the most fun bike in the entire universe

apparently not, according to the reviews i've read (they are retroshift)

^^by chance I saw this rig outside a coffee shop round my way last week. built up with, oooh, record 11 and some handbuilt alu rums iirc? SO bangin' compared to most of the crabon rigs it was sitting near.

that laser cut headtube is amazing. also... the wait for a vanilla is over 5 years?!?! handcrafted custom bikes are cool and all, but is vanilla doing anything so spectacular that it's worth waiting 5 years for one?

eh mec, elle est ou ma caisse? (ytth), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 03:30 (eleven years ago) link

it seems a bit insane to me too, how long do you wanna wait for a townie bike?? I guess that stuff just takes time when you do it right. (note that he gets other framebuilders in to work on the speedvagens, whereas I think vanilla is just sacha himself.)

str8 CX bike or more of a commuter that can do CX?

beet boy, beet boy, eat that perfect beet boy (haitch), Saturday, 15 June 2013 08:46 (eleven years ago) link

the latter, I think

he's swithering betw the genesis CDF, surly cross-check and boardman CX

they all seem so expensive when you look at the £1100 canyon full ultegra road bike

kenjataimu (cozen), Saturday, 15 June 2013 09:07 (eleven years ago) link

'proper' croix de fer is reportedly fairly heavy, CDF more so. sounds like they really roll over the ruff stuff tho. plus steal is reel. boardmans seem pretty good, wiggle export them here to aus and they were a steal with the exchange rate there for a while.

giant TCX?

surlys seem so dull to me!

beet boy, beet boy, eat that perfect beet boy (haitch), Saturday, 15 June 2013 10:31 (eleven years ago) link

focus mares would prob be a good deal too, actually.

beet boy, beet boy, eat that perfect beet boy (haitch), Saturday, 15 June 2013 10:33 (eleven years ago) link

Ridley X-Bow might fit the bill, belgian, looks right has rack eyes. 105 version clocks in at under $1000

See also Kona jake and Cannondale CAADX although you seem to be on Sora/Tiagra under 1000.

I don't think Civilian Bike make it to the UK but the Vive Le Roi and Le Roi Veut look pretty nice

This is a good deal on a TCX if it fits, less of a commuter, though

not sure why. maintenance?

kenjataimu (cozen), Saturday, 15 June 2013 12:43 (eleven years ago) link

they're so hot right now

genesis doing equilibrium disc for '14 model year - reckon i could be down with that once shimano get hydro down pat.

beet boy, beet boy, eat that perfect beet boy (haitch), Saturday, 15 June 2013 13:27 (eleven years ago) link

they are less wear + tear on rims for sure; probably more consistent performance in wet weather. more clearance for fenders too, I'd say.

beet boy, beet boy, eat that perfect beet boy (haitch), Saturday, 15 June 2013 13:31 (eleven years ago) link

I've had a Croix de Fer for 9 months and i think it's great (though I don't have much to compare it with). I wanted a do-everything bike (everything being commutes and light touring really). Discs are a huge improvement over any brake I've used before, and they work just as well in the wet. It's not a light bike but I've fitted Marathon Plus's and a rack and I don't really notice it being heavy anymore. That's my unbiased opinion on it.

useless chamber, Saturday, 15 June 2013 13:37 (eleven years ago) link

Downside with the discs on the Croix is the rear is mounted outside the frame so you have to get a special wide-ass rack to clear it.

£430 off the Di2 canyon ultimate AL.... nnnnnnnnnngggggggggh

£1700 is a bargain right? right?!

kenjataimu (cozen), Saturday, 29 June 2013 22:20 (eleven years ago) link

fuck. if I was happy in my job I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

selling my current bike wd drop the net cost to £1400 which is a genuine bargain for a Di2 equipped canyon bike
