Even if I had a proper pic of my bike (rather than a catalogue pic) I wouldn't post it cos you mocked Trek road bikes on the dead squirrel thread :(
― Mark C, Monday, 22 October 2007 13:26 (seventeen years ago) link
everyone seems to hate Trek roadbikes! I have never ridden one myself.
I hear a lot of dudes hating Cannondale too.
I'm happy with my no-name cycleurope taiwanese thing tho. Paid $500 for the frame (which was a total bargain in mah opinon). Columbus Airplane tubing.

Oh, it's easy.
Not saying the characterizations are true or fair.
Mocked for being luxury bikes-you sure you wanna lay that down, dude?(aka you see these in Masters races) Seven, Colnago, Merlin
Mocked for being the only bikes wannabes/yuppies know (aka you see these in 4s races): Trek, Cdale, Specialized, Lemond
Snark safe "cheap" mass market bikes: Giant, Fuji

I had a beautiful RB-1 back in the day. After 9 years, I literally abandoned the frameset at Veloswap in 2000 or so, then saw it built up in a bike shop, leaning against a counter in 2004. I knew it was mine from a distance because I'd had canti posts brazed onto it. It was wonderful to see it again, and it was totally spotless, way nicer than when I left it. A developmentally disabled guy was using it to get around.
I also had a really nice MB-1 for a coupla years til it was stolen. So so sad.

Meh, I am a wannabe/yuppie, I have no shame. I like my bike a lot - it's been the perfect introduction to proper road cycling.
Here it is (with my gf's unbelievably heavy sit up and beg no-brand monstrosity behind it):

― Pashmina, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 10:12 (seventeen years ago) link
Pash, how do folding bikes actually ride? I can't see myself ever getting one (unless my geographical/transport constraints made it the only possible practical measure) but sometimes I see people bombing along on them and I wonder whether they're putting every ounce of effort in or whether they're actually really rideable.
― Mark C, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 10:27 (seventeen years ago) link
Obviously I'm not an unbiased source! The main differences are that the riding position is usually somewhat upright compared to an ATB or a hybrid, and that there is no self centering - there isn't enough fork rake from those little wheels, so you can't ride with your hands off the bars & steer with your bum. Other than that they ride pretty great, or the good ones do, anyway. I used to fly along on my Brompton back when I was fit, I would overtake guys on mountain bikes on the way home, you'd hear the gears clicking behind you as they tried to keep up, haha.

Built up the nexus wheel yesterday, assembled bike until 2 am. OK, with the rubber on, that rear wheel weighs 6 lbs 10 oz. Also, Alex Adventurer rims are wiiide.

Thx. Just put 15 miles on it into work, with pannier. I'm not used to a bike that slack. It's got a lot of wheel flop. But at speed, a cadillac ride.
I'm wondering if I should take off the Redline fork and put the stock one on. They measure the same tho, same crown height, maybe the stock has a tiny bit less rake. dunno.

tiagra 10 speed, zora? a mechanic i was talking to swears it's smoother and works better than the more expensive stuff due to the cable routing.

That's the one. I didn't have the £ for a pricier bike anyhow, or the chops these days. The frame's a good fit; it's a manly bike & I'm of the female persuasion, but with a femme saddle it's comfy enough. I won't get to ride it until March now, but I'll be training hard then. I've been dragooned into riding the Dunwich Dunamo :/

DYNAMO.
No performance report, but I was sorta shocked at the plastic/stamped steel shit look of the latest ultegra brifters on mrs hunter's new ride.

Nah, I got hit by a car over two months ago, I just picked up the bike from the police station--apparently they store your shit when you're taken to the hospital. Now I have to get it to a bike shop for a repair/replace estimate.

My city ride. Bought from a dude in the valley down in LA, shipped it up to SF when I moved here. Swapped straight bars out for drops. New brakes levers/stem/saddle/seatpost/pedals, but the bronze chainring+calipers are original, same with the Suntour shifters and derailleur. This type of Suntour group has some kind of "auto-trim" function that happens when you shift front chainrings, according to Sheldon Brown.
Was tough for me to take the clips off, both for practicality and style reasons, but this is my main mode of transport and it's time for me to start wearing adult shoes sometimes.
Oh and definitely too small for me (every time I get on my road bike I'm surprised at how comfortable I feel) but I'm pretty emotionally attached at this point.
