What is the point? Tell me your recumbent stories.

all recumbents belong in the cycling lolz thread imo
― sleep, Monday, 21 April 2008 20:11 (seventeen years ago)
one of my bros had a theory about the correlation between beards and recumbents
― Jordan, Monday, 21 April 2008 20:31 (seventeen years ago)
how do you get started? i would probably lose my balance pretty quick at low speeds.
― Steve Shasta, Monday, 21 April 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)
My dad built a couple out of riveted sheet steel when I was a kid, just for lols and as a CAD experiment when Autocad was new. They were three-wheeled, though, and didn't corner well. I think the whole thing was not v serious but it got into bike shows and stuff...?
― Laurel, Monday, 21 April 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)
And the newspaper!
i rode a partly faired lightning p38 down some pass in montana very fast and it was cool. the custom paniers had a stereo system installed into them.
however in every other application, theyre lawn chairs on wheels and get my scorn.
― Hunt3r, Monday, 21 April 2008 23:15 (seventeen years ago)
this is my major concern.
― caek, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 01:04 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah it seems like that would be the case but is it really true or is it just bad visualising? Why would they be less stable than a normal bike?
― ledge, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 08:19 (seventeen years ago)
Less leverage on the initial strikedown?
― caek, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 16:48 (seventeen years ago)
Why would that be?
Could be that you can't move your body around as much to counterbalance.
― ledge, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)
et voila
"The problem of low speed stability arises because you're stuck in the seat. You can't get up out of the seat and move your body around to help with the balance, to counteract any wobble. A slow-moving recumbent is an unstable recumbent"

I have a beard. Bastard.
I had a Challenge Hurricane Tour GAZE UPON ITS AWESOMENESS
http://www.challenge-recumbents.com/images/picture.php?filename=images/inhoud/hurricanetour/hurricanetour-groot.jpg
I only dished it b/c I didn't have room to store the damn thing - v v small house, hence the Dahon Jetstream folder I've had for the past couple of years. Cons: they're slooooow uphill, as is well known. on a tadpole you can drop to a crawler gear and go up real slow, on a 2-wheeler, you got to leard how to balance while pedalling it slowly. It's tricky, but you can learn. Likewise starting off, youve got to kick it off quick, no slow starts on a 2-wheeler. Other con, if you have a dense foam seat back, it gets disgustingly sweaty after 5-8 miles, hammock seat or open cell foam cures this.
Pro: Nothing compares to blasting downhill on a 2-wheeler recumbent, NOTHING. Have you ever had the dream where you can fly? That's exactly what it feels like, man I'm getting the urge to get another one in just typing this, but I can't afford it. W/a bit of practice you can get along really quickly on one and if you want to burn off calories, you'll burn them off quicker, typically I found that after a 20-mile ride on the Hurricane, my whole body would feel tired, whereas on an upright 2-wheeler, just my legs. I am teh lardass now, but when I ran the Hurricane, my stomach was like a brick wall.
Generally speaking, the people I sell these machines to are older guys, and they do almost all have beards, it's true. Actually, a few guys I've dealt w/ look like Ed, aged about 50. One thing I have seen several times is the guy who's always fancied one, buys one, 6mo later he's sold all his uprights, 3-4 years later his garage is home to a Trice, a Greenspeed, a Hurricane, a Street Machine etc etc etc.
Don't knock it YOU WILL BE 50 ONE DAY YRSELF.....

no orange flag, no credibility
― Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)
The true hardcore recumbent devotee eschews the puny orange flag in favour of the 4' long flourescent windsock shaped like a chinese dragon or a giant koi carp or (vaguely) something like that
― Pashmina, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)
I think if the seat were more hammock-like it would solve some counterbalancing problems? Not sure how to work that out with frame allowances without looking (even more) dorky.

recumbent news:
Christopher Walken rides one in Brainstorm, which makes them a little cooler.
This one has front-wheel drive. whoa! http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/ct08/002763.php
― caek, Friday, 2 May 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)
If anyone wanted to get into recumbent cycling, found the high price offputting, but might spring for a tadpole-type trike at a slightly lower price, then now would be a good time to contact me.
― Pashmina, Saturday, 22 November 2008 11:07 (sixteen years ago)
i wouldn't want to try the rush hour weave with one of these things, but i take it they're kind to the cock vein.
