not a road race, a rec tour for all kinds of riders
― Hunt3r, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 17:04 (sixteen years ago)
This is what scares me most; someone totally oblivious who nails me out of nowhere. Drunk drivers, cell phone users, CD changers freak me out. I probably over estimate my ability to react to situations, but at least I'd have a fighting chance when something unfolds in front of me as part of the traffic pattern (right hookers, left hookers, lane changers). It's the asshole who hits me from behind or the side that I worry most about.

The 33-year-old male driver who opened the door of the Nissan Xterra was cited with opening a door in traffic, said a Chicago police spokeswoman. The Chicago City Council passed legislation in March that makes it illegal to open a car door in a biker's path. Penalties range from $150 to $500. According to the city's Web site, there is no bicycle lane on LaSalle.
In short, no.

cracked windows look freaky, but better to bounce off the top than role under the bottom. The guy survived and is in "fair condition" according to the article. Lucky that.

This is going to be the depressing thread on ILTRMB, it seems.
Guy on my bike forum says that he was waiting at a red light yesterday when suddenly he wakes up in hospital with a broken arm, tibia and femur (!) after a woman on a mobile ploughs into the back of him. She accepted full responsibility, fwiw.

At the funeral service yesterday, both Helen and myself made a point of saying that although dad getting killed was a "tragedy", he was in no way a "tragic cyclist". Nevertheless, the stupid local paper still lead with "farewell to tragic cyclist", "tributes paid to tragic norman" etc. Also they misquoted the speech we gave. Bloody papers, they can't get anything right.
Members of Sustrans and federation of cycling old timers leading the hearse on their bikes was amazing, it made me feel so proud of my dad.
My dad was an awesome guy. Among the things he invented was the sealed cartridge bottom bracket, which he held a patent for for a couple of years in the '70's. All that knowledge gone forever b/c someone fucked up in a car. What a fucked up world.
― Pashmina, Friday, 4 July 2008 14:36 (sixteen years ago)
Oh Norman, that's devatsting. Your dad sounds amazing.

My GF's housemate bounced off her bike in Brooklyn in a hit and run. Mainly cracked ribs and bruised could have been a lot worse. Police are trying to trace the driver.

hi. i had the green, it was dark, i had front and back blinkers on. dude is coming towards me making a left turn. as he starts inching forward to make the left, i assume he is just getting ready to turn, after i pass--well apparently he didn't see me at all and continued turning right in my left side.
i flew off the bike, my pedal was shattered, i'm not sure if it was from me pulling me foot out or from the front of the car hitting the bike. i felt ok after the accident (more worried about the bike, obvs), except for a couple of bruises in the usual spots.
this morning i woke up with a killer stiff neck and back so i went to the hospital, got some x-rays. everything seems to be ok. doctor said to stay off the bike for a couple of days... hmmm.
― cutty, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 17:19 (sixteen years ago)
dude, get well soon. happy to hear you're okay. you can get on the rollers right? :-P
― Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

― sleep, Friday, 1 August 2008 18:40 (sixteen years ago)
yes he was upset, apparently he had a cyclist friend who was hit by a car and badly injured. so after my initial "DID YOU SEE THIS FUCKING BLINKER?" i calmed down and was nice to him.

What we have learned these past few months. You are a motorist, you can take some poor fucker out and you are most likely going to either get away with it or nearly get away with it. You can fuck up your victim's family, and they have no legal recourse against you or your insurers whatsoever, except that they can claim funeral expenses and a few bits of tuppeny-halfpenny costs for this and that. You can have a notifiable illness, have not told either the DVLA or your insurers about this, remain behind the wheel of your motor car, and the cops will not throw your sorry ass in the slammer when they find out about this. In fact your insurers will agree to continue to indemnify you when they find out. How kind of them.
Motorists are surely the most entitled group of ppl in the UK, seriously. Why does the motor lobby whine & play the victim card so much, I don't know.
