Why didn't they just add another farthing at the front?

the front wheel of a penny farthing acts in place of the reduction gearing system on a modern bike. if you have a smaller wheel directly connected to the crank you would have to pedal like billy'o to get anywhere.

i saw crazy dude on high wheeler with feet on pegs doing about 35 mph down the dam hill a couple weeks ago. srsly, his center of gravity is like 6 feet up, he falls, itll be total carnage.
