Bikers riding against traffic are the worst, THE WORST, to me. It's just a pet peeve, I guess, but as soon as the city puts in a good one-way bike lane, everyone starts using it in the WRONG DIRECTION just because it's nice and clear now. At NIGHT, with NO LIGHTS, so god forbid you look the other direction because they're riding directly at you and won't warn you until they're basically within punching distance.

They're called sideWALKS for a reason.

a lot of people here ride the wrong way up one-way streets which i don't know, when the street is really wide and quiet it's not such a big deal, but obv i get the point. it's the riding on a one-way street the wrong way in the bike path clearly marked as going in opposite direction BECAUSE it's a one-way street, when the whole other side of the street is designated for bikes & cars to go the other way! as laurel is pointing out. and there are all these arrows (universal symbols of direction, right?) everywhere.

"are you trying to fucking kill yourself?" vs "are you trying to fucking kill me?"

I can't stand pavement riders but srsly riding against traffic seems totally fucked up and I'm not sure I've ever even really seen it.

is the question about during rush hour or the middle of the night?

i do at least one or the other almost every day as i live on a one way street coming down an enormous hill. if there are no cars coming i take the street. if there are cars coming i take the sidewalk EXCEPT if there are pedestrians than i hop off and walk bike up the half block to my house.

shasta your kind of situation sounds like a good exception but i see idiots do both of these almost daily

"are you trying to fucking kill yourself?" vs "are you trying to fucking kill me?"

^ha exactly!

The one way street thing bugs me way more in new york than in london. Frequently there is no logic to one ways from a cycling perspective in London although I don't do it myself, in new york, the right direction is one block over.

The streets I'm thinking of, the reason the city put marked bike lanes on them to begin with is that they're BUSY and cars go FAST on them -- the bike lanes are necessary for bike safety and if you stray outside of them you might get pasted by an SUV. Someone riding in the bike lane in the wrong direction is increasing everyone else's risk by like several hundred percent.

I get really pissy about people riding the wrong way because they invariably don't say anything or warn you or have lights (at night) or etc because if they GAVE a shit in the first place they wouldn't be doing it. And let's face it, my visual recognition is sort of tuned to things I expect to see, like cars pulling out, or peds not seeing me and stepping out from parked cars, doors opening, whatever. I'm not scanning for things coming TOWARD me.
