best fixed gear tires? one consumer's report

I used to ride:
specialized armadillos - bomb/flat proof but slowwwww riding, felt like a tank going up any hill.
continental ultra sports - cheap but total pincushions, what you save in tire you will spend in tubes.
vittoria rubino pros - great smooth, unidirectional ride and look so rad but i skidded through to the threads in under 2 months (and i'm not a total skid fiend, i have a brake actually... it's just big hills, fast riding, etc.) total bitches to get on/off by the way.

so i went back to my michelin krylion carbon pro for my back tire. kinda generic looking but rides fast, if not a little firm compared to the ruinos. i've laid some serious skids on these with very little wear compared to the contis/rubinos but with a little rotation will last a good year easy.

i'm ideally looking for durable AND fast, any recommendations?

Conti Gatorskins get good reviews. Never tried them myself though. They're supposedly a good compromise between durability and speed.

Shasta: buddy of mine recommends these, but I cannot speak for their quality myself.

one month passes...

gbx, i got a good deal on what you linked ($25) and threw it on my rear... holy shit. it's not sticky at all, it's like a slip & slide. craziest thing... the skid is SILENT. even on rough surfaces, it's like sliding on wet painted asphalt compared to my other tires. thanks dude.

no problem! i'll have to try them myself, now that my rear is going bald.

however: is the slickness an overall good thing? like, does it bite when it needs to?

gbx, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 04:45 (seventeen years ago)

Uh well only once Ive almost ended up in a crowded crosswalk but I think its just a little bit of a late adjustment on my part... I'm not an ambidextrious skidder. 150 psi rating too. I'm only at 135.

Can't tell if there's a winter-specific thread anywhere, but I need winter tires for my main fixed gear.

Anybody have an opinion on the Nokian W106/something similar? (Ideally 700x35c.)

I somehow got by with a front brake and minimal skidding on 25c Gatorskins all last winter (love them btw - bought 23s this summer, and I like them even more; total pain in the ass to mount, but at 120psi they're amazing), but my ride's now much longer/mostly untreated, and the weather's been worse here so far - I would have eaten shit if I'd rode in this morning. Fuck a wintry mix.

...so i just bought a rear one of these today on the way to work. i had gotten my third flat in as many days, and decided it was Time.

Steve Shaster OTM: super-silent skids, it's sorta crazy. only had one scary, too-slippy moment, but i'll adjust by the end of the week, i'm sure. overall: SOLD

Didn't want to start a new thread, but: is there any reason why I shouldn't ride my road bike (w/ gears) with a 25mm back tyre and a 23mm front tyre?

Mark C, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

The rim can support both btw.

Mark C, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

None at all, providing there is enough clearance for the tyre.

Ed, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 17:00 (seventeen years ago)

im using 1 1/8" and 1 1/4" front and back, it's fine.

i would suggest opposite arrangment!

bigger tire with better traction in the front means less falling down.

gbx, Thursday, 24 January 2008 01:38 (seventeen years ago)

Your ideas are intriguing to me. Especially since I have mostly avoided falling down to date and would like to continue doing so.

Of course, I could just buy another 25mm tyre for the front.

Mark C, Thursday, 24 January 2008 11:09 (seventeen years ago)

That's interesting, gbx, I wd have thought you wanted the traction for yr drive wheel...or is this one of those things like trail that only make sense in physics?

Laurel, Thursday, 24 January 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

i'm supposd to be leaving for work, but:

in dicey conditions, losing control of the rear wheel just means you spin out, lose effective power transfer, and so on. losing the front wheel, say, going around a corner or making some correction at speed: head + pavement. therefore, it stands to reason that the wheel that most urgently needs to be pasted to the ground at all times is the front. if the rear goes wobbly and fishtaily, who cares, at least you won't fall. front wheel wash outs (admittedly rare) are always dangerous.

this is also why sheldon recommends NOT "rotating" your tires. bump an old front to the back, maybe, but never throw a balding rear to the front.

gbx, Thursday, 24 January 2008 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

some of this illustrates why secretly front-wheel drive is worse than rear-wheel drive in cars

gbx, Thursday, 24 January 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

Depends how long the wheelbase is and the power of the car.

Gatorskinz are a fucking bear to mount. Took hella effort.
