I DONT REALLY MIND IT

ddb, Thursday, 25 October 2007 00:59 (seventeen years ago)

I don't mind being wet, but having eyes (or glasses) covered in water is a problem.

weather is "interesting'

gbx, Thursday, 25 October 2007 05:18 (seventeen years ago)

glasses in the rain is really annoying

Lingbert, Thursday, 25 October 2007 05:32 (seventeen years ago)

If it's not too cold and you're not too far from safety, then I don't really mind the rain. If it's absolutely silly conditions, like when you get caught in a freaky downpour and all of a sudden you've got torrents running down the trails - those rides are pretty classic I think.

NickB, Thursday, 25 October 2007 08:32 (seventeen years ago)

(I do hate it when my maps get wet though)

NickB, Thursday, 25 October 2007 08:33 (seventeen years ago)

it's fun, unless you wear glasses (i do) or you've just left the house in the morning and your feet get soaked and you know you have to spend the next 18 hours with wet shoes.

emsk, Thursday, 25 October 2007 09:18 (seventeen years ago)

Putting wet kit back on to ride home in - uberdudley

NickB, Thursday, 25 October 2007 09:40 (seventeen years ago)

x2

Also I kind of hating getting splashed by cars but it's not their fault water fell from the sky.

nickalicious, Monday, 29 October 2007 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

nine months pass...

I can cope with a bit of rain. Torrential rain along with fierce wind, on the other hand, is a total nightmare. I can't decide whether to ride home or leave the bike at work and use public transport tonight and tomorrow morning.

Daniel Giraffe, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 16:28 (sixteen years ago)

if its really bad and im not already en route i'll take my bike onto light rail and then just ride the last 15 minutes home, instead of the whole hour. fortunately, rain is rare here.

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

Getting wet on the way to work is certainly dud. On the way home it's not necessarily so bad, depends how I'm feeling.

krakow, Thursday, 14 August 2008 06:41 (sixteen years ago)

I was once caught in a torrential storm on my way to work. I took cover under a shop awning until the rain let up a little, but I had to ride through foot deep standing water at several points on my route. Bikes are a great way to transverse flooded streets. Skinny tires cut right through the water.

Super Cub, Thursday, 14 August 2008 07:04 (sixteen years ago)

i have been caught in torrential downpours so many times this summer - it's kind of fun as long as i'm on my way home (arriving at work soaking wet blows) and because the rain isn't cold or anything - all the cars though are a bitch, as apparently traffic rules are less important during heavy rain. and cars in rain are so loud!

riding in late-fall and early-spring rain here can be face-freezingly sucky tho

when i lived in vancouver and rode every day year-round i got soaked like all the time and so always rode to work in biking gear with work clothes in bag. said fuckit a lot of the time re: riding to social events or shows and things and just took the bus.

rrrobyn, Thursday, 14 August 2008 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

i guess actually the biggest thing is that the rain gets my bike really gritty and dirty and obv the chain and gears are affected - i srsly need to learn more abt bike maintenance...

rrrobyn, Thursday, 14 August 2008 15:57 (sixteen years ago)

I hate when mud gets thrown up

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 14 August 2008 18:06 (sixteen years ago)

rain in races actually doesn't bother me at all

cutty, Thursday, 14 August 2008 18:08 (sixteen years ago)

oh dood. even in crits? mitigating factor- the crashes hurt less since you slide more and lose less skin.

the worst is riding in wet falling snow, which turns to water on the roads and then covers your bike, which then freezes. you end up soaking wet and cold, stuck in one gear after the cogs freeze into a block, with a 30 pound bike.

Hunt3r, Thursday, 14 August 2008 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

naw crits in the rain, i will stay home for that

cutty, Thursday, 14 August 2008 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

usually i stay home for crits in general, unless part of a stage race

cutty, Thursday, 14 August 2008 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

No I did not put diarrhea in my pants I went biking in the rain without a fender

Dan I., Friday, 15 August 2008 05:24 (sixteen years ago)

do people actually *put* diarrhea in their pants?

Super Cub, Friday, 15 August 2008 05:45 (sixteen years ago)

Wet feet is the only aspect I really dislike. I suppose I should look into overshoes. I just always suspected that they'd be a bit of a faff.

krakow, Friday, 15 August 2008 07:24 (sixteen years ago)

Will anyone actually say classic?

Even for the people who don't mind, would you actually *pefer* it raining than not when you ride?

S-, Friday, 15 August 2008 07:54 (sixteen years ago)

The moment you say "fuck it, I'm going to get wet" is kind of classic.

Super Cub, Friday, 15 August 2008 07:57 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I can remember a couple of classic off-road rides in the rain, one where we were soaking wet within ten minutes and it didn't let up all day, and one where we were caught in a crazy heavy hailstorm - small hard stones pinging through the holes in the helmet, ow ow ow! Sure I might have preferred bright sunny weather but once I accepted my fate it was classic grinning in the face of adversity.

ledge, Friday, 15 August 2008 08:07 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, besides the increased possibility of wipe-outs, it's just gritting your teeth, really. Just one more of those things that makes me think: there are a lot of things in my life that can't be fixed with a hot shower and dry clothes. I'm glad this isn't one of those things.

Laurel, Friday, 15 August 2008 15:50 (sixteen years ago)

i don't mind it too much until i'm making a long downhill turn on a street that includes rails and grooves.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

ouch

thoroughly soaked to the bone riding home last night in thunderstorm. hardly any bikes on the road tho, rode fast, not like yr going to get any wetter. fully had OH but it feels good to be alive! moment while riding through the park

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

i will go ahead and say "classic." at least in situations where it's not cold and it's not a big deal to arrive wet (ie - going home).

i've definitely gone out and ridden in the rain on purpose, if it's really bucketing. it's fun!

gbx, Friday, 22 August 2008 13:54 (sixteen years ago)

My dad used to love it, and would boast of great rides he'd done in downpours. I hate it - you can't see, your bike gets shitted up, cold, sodden feet is THE WORST FEELING EVER. I won't go out if it's raining, though if I'm out and it starts I'll stick it out till i get home, unless it gets really heavy, in which care I'll fold up the bike & go home.

The only good thing is, you get home after a ride in the cold rain, you fill up a bath with really hot water & step into it, that feels really good.

Pashmina, Friday, 22 August 2008 13:59 (sixteen years ago)

Worse than sodden feet is if you've been foolish enough to go cycling in jeans only for the heavens to open.

Mark C, Friday, 22 August 2008 14:53 (sixteen years ago)

^^^ true

this is why i avoid jeans and bikes, as a general rule

gbx, Friday, 22 August 2008 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

six months pass...

Anyone who commutes on the bike know of some good shoe and/or pants covers for rainy days? Even after the rain, wet roads will do a number on my feet & legs.

NasenFlutin', Monday, 23 February 2009 19:48 (sixteen years ago)

(ur using full fenders, right?)

ive used old school backcountry xc gaiters for this, they're great and packable. but does anyone even make those anymore, with plastic boots ubiquitous?

iro with the brown bag (Hunt3r), Friday, 27 February 2009 22:35 (sixteen years ago)

first wet ride of the year on the way to work this mor'n. dud!!

resident advice whore (haitch), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

i used to work in gaiters---they still make them for just plain hiking. look into Outdoor Research.

also, i've got Prl Izumi neoprene booties that are great. super warm.
