Overhauling my vintage Raleigh

I need to give my Raleigh a good old deep strip and rebuild. It's from 1953, so it has whitworth everything and imperial sizes for everything. Where the hell do I start.

Actually I think I know. I need to do the headset as it is a bit stiff at the extremes. However everything needs a rebuild. Wheels, Sturmey Archer, Hubs, BB. Anyone got any tips on working on very old bikes?

Cottered or one-piece cranks? Also;

DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT TAKE THE REAR HUB APART. UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. YOU WILL NOT HAVE A BIKE TO RIDE IF YOU DO THIS, I SWEAR TO GOD. I WARN YOU BECAUSE IT HAPPENED TO ME.

There's apparently a book that's indispensible in dealing with internals, I forget what it's called. I met someone online once who said he could reassemble a hub in 30 minutes with the help of that book, maybe he was right and there's just a trick to it? I spent HOURS AND HOURS until I gave up and bought a new rear wheel (the bike shop wouldn't take the job either).

A wise old man once said to me that internal hubs are for rocket scientists with OCD. Don't do it.

I have seen an exploded diagram from so SA nerd site on the web, and I am not going anywhere near that. Which is a shame as mine has a extra gear and a dynamo which I am not getting any use of.

I think the wheels ned replacing or rebuilding as all of the spokes have seized to the nipples and I can't true them.

This is my hub [PDF link]

Been there, done that, bought the Tshirt:

Wowowow that's a way better diagram + explanation than I found, but I had the Shimano instead, maybe its fans are less numerous/geeky. I have an SA now that I've never serviced, maybe I should file that PDF for a rainy day.

Laurel, Thursday, 25 October 2007 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

wow, where does that t-shirt come from?

Ed, Thursday, 25 October 2007 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

Given that I found rebuilding the freewheel on a late 90s campag hub enough for my skills, I thin a SA is above and beyond.

Ed, Thursday, 25 October 2007 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

Hahah ddb wore that shirt in my presence once, I was like "THAT DIAGRAM IS HARSHING MY BUZZ" but was secretly charmed and bought my own. www.laekhouse.com

Re your overhaul, you're going to need a different set of bb tools than for your cartridge one. One of these (apparently called a C-spanner or lock-ring wrench):

and depending on how your cups are made, you'll need another tool to get them out as well. Mine have this weird semi-rectangular ridge across the face and need a weird cone wrench that I can't find online.

I have my grandad's old one of those (he owned a bike shop)

I can rebuild a 3-sp pretty quickly & easily, but a 4-sp is a different matter altogether. A good few of the parts are unobtanium - incl the indicator chain, which is different to that in a 3sp. Plus, you will never get the dynamo working again and they were pretty crappy & feeble even when they did work. What size wheels are they & how many spokes? It might be worth just replacing the entire hub if it's shagged. I might have a servicable 3-sp hub somewhere I can sort you out w/, alternatively a new one is RRP 60 quid, probably can do for about 49 (36h only, though)

Pashmina, Thursday, 25 October 2007 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

Ohhhhhhh I should have sent it to you!

Laurel, Thursday, 25 October 2007 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

I'll have to count spokes etc. but that sounds like a potential good deal to me. May be a good idea to send you the wheels whilst I am in CHI/NYC.

I shall check this evening. Then I can do the easy thinks like brakes, BB and headset.

Ed, Thursday, 25 October 2007 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

Are they rod or cable brakes, out of curiosity?

Pashmina, Thursday, 25 October 2007 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

Rod

Ed, Thursday, 25 October 2007 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

Most urgently I need to find a supplier of rod brake pads

Ed, Thursday, 25 October 2007 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

Got you on them as well, I've got both sizes IN STOCK. Fibrax still makes them.

Pashmina, Thursday, 25 October 2007 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

Awww! I was going to say the Sheldon Brown site offers both but I'm sure there's somewhere closer to home....

Laurel, Thursday, 25 October 2007 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

Again I shall check size and send you an order straight away.
