Going to be in chicago again in mid-november, is it still cyclable then, relatively comfortably? Anywhere I can hire a bike to whizz around on? Any bike shops I can splure my mighty pounds in?

Hey Ed: yeah, it should definitely still be cyclable then, however brisk.
For hiring bikes: dunno, I can look into it. There is a very slim chance that I can hook something up through a friend.
As far as mighty pound spending, go here. Yojimbo's is one of a kind. The shop itself looks like a wizard's workshop, and Marcus is a singular character in the Chicago bike scene. It's practically unmarked from the outside, and you usually have to knock to get in. Also, Marcus does not generally suffer fools, so it helps to have an idea of what you're looking for.
I've never been to Tati, but it's also a one man operation, on the south side, and I guess does custom frame-building as well. Check out the "locals only" policy.
Any idea where you'll be staying?

2 Blocks from Tati it seems, 53rd and South Hyde park.

I go by that Tati place every day on my way to work. I have never stopped in but I guess I should now... wait, I can't!
