I'm going for my first tandem ride next Saturday on a rental ($48 for 24 hours, ouch).

Tell me your tandem experiences.

Daisy, Daisy
Give me your answer do
I'm half crazy all for the love of you
It won't be a stylish marriage
I can't afford a carriage
But you look sweet
Upon a seat
Of a bicycle built for two

Either that or the Kubrick boxset... you make the call.

I'd like to know how this goes as my gf has suggested this as a solution to me riding too fast (my suggestion that she man up and speed up hasn't worked too well, for starters he bike weighs at least twice mine).

However I've always associated tandems with unattractive middle age couples in matching anoraks. Man always on the front often cycling in sandals and socks and inappropriately short cotton shorts.

Heeheehee.... Tandems...

You frequent Bike Forums, right? The tandem forum ought to be helpful. Probably the nicest people you'll ever encounter. Good at working together.

I do not understand the point of tandems beyond the, uh, intimacy. Do yo go faster for less effort or something?

From Wikipedia:

While a tandem has double the pedalling power with only slightly more frictional loss in the drivetrain, it has about the same wind resistance as a single bike. High performance tandems may weigh less than twice as much as a single bike, so the power to weight ratio can be slightly better than that of a single bike and rider. Tandems can reach relatively high speeds, especially downhill and on flat to rolling terrain. They are not necessarily slower on climbs, but are perceived as such, in part due the need for a high level of coordination between the riders, especially if the physical abilities of the two riders are very different, requiring a compromise on cadence.

I've always wanted to do this too. $48 for 24 hours sounds like a pretty good deal.

Technically speaking they're pretty much a geek-out wet dream, as far as I can tell, b/c of the specialized set-up and gearing and things like the chance to set the pedals out-of-phase so yer never BOTH at the top of yr stroke at the same time (ie someone is always delivering the powah) and etc. I dunno, never rode one.
