NYC - Where to find second hand bikes?

My GF has been converted to the cause by her old Schwinn step through, lovely looking bike but heavy to get up from the cellar and wants to get something a little lighter and nippier. Ideally a flat bar step through road bike.

Anyway, good places to look? Don't mind a fixer upper as I will be there next week.

Recycle-A-Bicycle! There's one in DUMBO and one in the East Village. I do their Ladies' Volunteer night there on Tuesdays, they're cool. They rehab serviceable bikes with total overhauls, so you know that even if the bb was FINE when the bike was donated, they took it apart anyway. Bikes prob start in the $150 range and go up to $450 or so.

I've never been to the EV shop so I dunno what shop carries what stock. You could call ahead and ask what's avail right then, since you want a partic kind of bike.

TZA: Yah, totally! Let's talk about your bike later -- meb see you tonight?

Laurel, Thursday, 7 February 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

I think it is more of a case that I know what bike would suit but I think E wants to try a few out.

Ed, Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

Well, smaller frame sizes are a bit harder to find. If she's a shortie, probably call ahead regardless.

Laurel, Thursday, 7 February 2008 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

Nearly as tall as me, she can almost stand over my 60cm surly. But I shall call ahead nonetheless.

Ed, I was under impression that you are a Britisher. No?

Super Cub, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

I am a Britisher but my GF live in New York she is an Americanisher. I try to get over when I can. I just got made redundant (in fact when I was last there) and now a new job so I am spending the redundancy payment on coming back.

Ed, Thursday, 7 February 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)
