'Math'
American comedy is painfully unfunny. There's no real bite, no real cynicism, it always has to be nicey nicey in the end. A or B list, SNL fits that bill surely.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 4 February 2018 23:11 (seven years ago)
today, sure. I think SNL at its best (maybe 80s-early 90s) was good exactly because it captured and spoofed that wide-eyed lack of cynicism. Kevin Nealon comes to mind, and all of the fake commercials. Since at least Will Ferrell and maybe going back to Chris Farley and Adam Sandler though the style of comedy has been very "I AM BEING FUNNY RIGHT NOW! DO YOU SEE ME BEING FUNNY!"

At Aldi I bag my own bc it’s the only way. But at a lot of grocery stores it’s barely do-able without getting into the cashier’s work area. (As map pointed out.)
At one grocery store where I worked in high school, a customer bagging their own groceries was a red flag, and anybody from stocker to manager would put a stop to it.
Most aren’t quite that service-oriented (IME, Harris Teeter still is) but it’s still kind of like if a guest at a restaurant got up to refill their own water or get a clean fork. It’s a little odd for everyone.
― Je55e, Monday, 4 August 2025 22:20 (one month ago)
I forgot till now — at the stores where I worked, the baggers pushed the cart or carried the bags to customers cars. You definitely did not OFFER — you just started to do it and let them decline if they didn’t want help.
And if the baggers were all busy, then someone else jumped in bc it was a basic service.
― Je55e, Monday, 4 August 2025 22:27 (one month ago)

― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 4 August 2025 23:35 (one month ago)
I almost always bag my own groceries. I don't really mind if a dedicated bagger does it, but at the two stores I usually shop at (one a local market, the other Trader Joe's), a bagger shows up maybe 10% of the time. Instead of standing around while the cashier does two jobs, I'd rather just get to work and get out of there more quickly. I bring my own bags and have my own system for where to put what.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 5 August 2025 00:36 (one month ago)
It can be really awkward to bag your own groceries because sometimes the cashier gets a little flustered and apologizes for being being slow or for all the baggers being busy.this has never happened to me.ever.

this makes sense. i'm just picturing all of the checkout lines i've been in where the grocery bags are behind the payment kiosk and basically out of reach. apparently that's not always the case.

In Japan and some Nordic countries IIRC in some places they put your stuff in a new basket or trolley and you take it over to a bagging station to get on with at your leisure.

We now have handheld scanners in some supermarkets so you can scan and bag as you go.
― ledge, Tuesday, 5 August 2025 09:40 (one month ago)
At the checkouts at Lidl the cashier scans your groceries then moves them to a conveyor belt, which drops each item into one of two lanes = let's call them lanes 1 and 2 - with lane 1 accessible from the aisle you're in and lane 2 accessible from the adjacent aisle. Before the cashier scans the next shopper behind you, s/he moves a lever that routes their items to lane 2 while you bag your items and place them in your cart in lane 1. One of my friends finds this setup intimidating. I don't, but you certainly can't doddle, because if you take too long bagging your stuff the person who was two behind you will have their items routed back to the same lane 1 you're using and they'll be a traffic jam of sorts. You also have to remember to move your cart to the adjacent lane if you happen to be assigned lane 2.
I still love Lidl though; long hours, good selection, and crazy-low prices despite good-quality stuff. They deserve the same kind of adoration Trader Joe's does around here.
