Number one for me will be Formula 1's Jim Clark Cup, which was for the fastest driver in a non-turbo car in the last year of turbo racing in the 1980s.
It was won by "Doctor" Jonathan Palmer.

I will rep for Super League Australia for the Adelaide Rams and Hunter Mariners (WORLD CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RUNNER UPS). And even better, the "Origin Tri-Series" that they had to rig to ensure a New South Wales vs Queensland final.

Is there any competition in football that stirs the blood more than the Football League Trophy? A mere list of the sponsors over the years captures a little of the heady magic of the thing: Freight Rover, Sherpa Van, Leyland DAF, Autoglass, Auto Windscreens, LDV Vans, Johnstone's Paint. Tragically 5 of those businesses no longer exist, but for me they sum up the spirit of another two or three fixtures jammed into the middle of a 46 game season so that Torquay United fans get a chance to say they've been to Wembley.
My Dad's VHS copy of Wolves' 1988 conquering of Burnley (coincidence? or perhaps not?) still sits proudly on the shelves in his living room. Just behind that replica Steve Bull figure I got him one Christmas.

When it comes to European football excitement, I'm all about the Anglo-Italian Cup. All the big name clubs have had their hands on this cup like...Notts County...

Being 10 years old and playing Aussie Rules for my primary school, once per season I'd have to play in a Lightning Tournament against the other schools in my local area. I wondered what I'd be like if they'd have to do that in the big leagues? Thankfully they staged the 1996 AFL Coca-Cola Centenary Lightning Premiership which answered that question in addition to "if they held a lightning premiership at Waverly Park in early February and it pissed down raining, would anyone show up?". The answer was no, which was good news because Essendon won.

There's nothing like excitement of One-Day Cricket. And there's nothing quiet like the excitement of sailing. Imagine if they could combine the two? Thankfully, they did back in 1987 when Perth held host to the Benson & Hedges Challenge as part of the 1987 America's Cup Festival of Sport. (A big hello to Alan Bond, if you're reading). Australia, England, Pakistan and the West Indies thrilled the Western Australian fans under the new lights at the WACA.
Everyone was hoping for a showdown between the hometown heroes, Australia, and the top team in world cricket back in those days, The West Indies. Instead, the final was between England and Pakistan.
Even worse, England won.

http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1094211/index.htm"...The already bulging annals of aviation ( Orville, Wilbur, Lindbergh, Superman, etc.) are again going to undergo a fattening process," read an early flyer sent out by Michael Campbell Sports, Inc. "To give you an idea of the scope of this event...invitations have been sent to all 149 member countries of the United Nations. When you consider that the most nations ever represented in a paper airplane toss is a mere 28...it shouldn't take long to figure out this thing is BIG STUFF. Before a summary of the rules, it is with pleasure that we announce that a naked 1978 Toyota Celica liftback will be parked directly in the center of a large circle on the AstroTurf floor of the stadium, its sun roof open. A paper airplane that floats down and into that sun roof will earn its owner the car—lock, stock and windshield wipers.

What is going to be the big game of the pre-season? Celtic vs Al-Ahly or Celtic vs Brisbane??

Or Fulham vs Brisbane????
C'mon, it's gotta be Robbie Fowler making his debut for North Queensland Fury against the Wolves.

When they first announced the game, I thought they were playing the old NSL team from Wollongong.

Major League Volleyball was a women's professional volleyball league in the United States. It was established in 1987 and disbanded during its third season on March 20, 1989.
One of the teams was the San Jose Golddiggers. Hmmm.
