A bush fugitive who has outsprinted police in the foothills of Melbourne for the past three weeks has slipped the net yet again, this time making his getaway from a lolly shop in Sassafras.

A police officer was nearly within arm’s reach of catching James D’Zilva yesterday afternoon but was unable to sustain the incredible pace set by the fleet-footed 32-year-old as he ran into the bush.

D’Zilva, who suffers from schizophrenia, has broken into numerous homes and shops since 7 December, when police began their hunt after he allegedly stabbed a police officer in Healesville.

"He’s got a very sweet tooth," Superintendent Jeff Forti, who is leading the search, told radio 3AW today.

"He’s regularly committing burglaries we allege and on nearly all occasions he steals sweet things, ice-creams etc."

On Christmas Eve D’Zilva targeted a bakery in Yarra Glen, while two weeks ago he allegedly smashed the front window of the Panton Hill General Store and stole chocolate bars.

Police have previously described D’Zilva’s pace as phenomenal, while he has been known to cover 30 kilometres a night.

"If anyone approaches him he runs and I mean, he could be in the Olympics, because he can run," Sergeant Wayne Williams of Healesville Police told The Age previously.

"He’s quick and he can do incredible distances. He’s running around, half the time he’s in bare feet."
